Said to have originally been introduced by the Spanish to the Philippines, cock fighting or 'Sabong'is a
significant part of Filipino life. Classed as a bloodsport and illegal in many parts of the world,it is akin
to a National sport in the Philippines. Cockerels are literally everywhere - in both urban and
countryside settings, commonly seen tethered by one leg to a fixed stake, they may look neglected
but will be the focus of much devotion by their owners in preparation to fight.
Considerable amounts of money are involved in cockfighting not only in the fervent betting during
fights but also in the industry as a whole. A one to two year period is the average time needed for a
cockerel to be ready for entry to the 'Buwangan' ( cockfighting arena). To have the best chance of
winning specific feeding programmes with vitamin supplements will be required, a whole industry
therefore has evolved in the production of specialist food. The cockerel will need to be fed early in
the morning and later in the day to ensure best possible growth and development and disease will
need to be dealt with by administration of specific drugs.
Bloodlines are a significant factor and cross breeding with other breeds particularly from the USA is
undertaken. A desirable feature for example would be to produce a cockerel physically tall with long
legs - thus having a reach advantage over its opponent. To promote the bloodline a prized cockerel
with a winning streak of several wins will be put to stud.
Sparring is an important part of training. Cockerels are introduced to eachother and aggressive
behaviour is encouraged. A specific routine is followed whereby each bird is allowed to peck at the
other whilst being held by the trainer. To prevent injury at this stage the birds are fitted with small
pads to cover their natural spurs - similar to boxing gloves. On being let loose they will fight instantly
but not allowed to fight too long or to inflict damage on the opponent.
electing the broodfowl determines how the line evolves. Obviously. But no matter what we say, it is
just the breeders choice as to what he considers to be the "best" among his genetic options.
amiliarized your birds with all types of rooster colors!!! from hennie, gold, black, white, doms,
chocolate white, blues...maybe pink or green..hehehe
Spar them with or used those off-colored roosters as catch or teaser cock!!!
About a few years ago i went to Philippines for a family reunion. Checked out the fights at the town
pit. Action was great, but one thing i did not understand was why do they only use the weight scale
in derbys and not at the HACKS? They only used the human eye and just by looking at the other
rooster judging it if their rooster can whip it or its to tall or yada yada yada and so on! You will
always see a weight scale at the shows here in Hawaii. Can someone in the Philippines fill me in on
this, or have they started using scales at the Hacks in Philippines? Aloha!
i remember, a long time ago, my professor at the university, with assuring loud voice, and
with a yard stick in hand, proclaimed: look at this yard stick as your lifetime. an inch is a year
of your life. the nineteenth to the twenty second inches would affect the rest of the yard—the
rest of your life, forever. that short four inches, in comparison to the whole yard stick—your
whole life, are your college years. it is a key as to whether you would be a success in life or
not. once you successfully passed those inches, no matter how hard they might be, you could
look anybody in the eye, whether rich or poor, and be proud of yourself, for accomplishing
finishing those four inches in college, forever. and you would have the key to better paying
jobs or positions in your lifetime.
in sabong and other gambling games or sports, ive seen a lot of people lose their fortune and
wealth, but not really knowing the game. in any game or sport, especially when gambling
money is involved, you’ve got to know the ropes, you’ve got to try to learn every aspect of
the game that you could learn. educate yourself on everything you could learn; the rules of
the game; which fighters to breed, how to bet, etc., etc. etc.
ive asked a tagapusta once, as to whether he considered himself as a sabong expert. of course,
he bragged, "yes, ive been a tagapusta for more than 30 years and i practically grew up, and
got old, in the sabongan". so I asked him what is the percentage advantage of a dehadista
when the logro is nueve, or 8 to 9. to clear or clarify my question, i said the percentage
advantage of a dehadista when the logro is sampu siyam, or 10 to 9, is ten (10) per cent. well,
he gave and recited to me all the possible bets he could come up with and all the correct pay
offs, and in exasperation, he declared that nueve and sampu siyam is almost the same bet but
nueve is a little better, but he could not tell me what the percentage advantage of logro nueve
is--why logro nueve is better than sampu siyam.
maybe the poor guy just did not go to school, or whatever. as for me, im still educating
myself. to be a success in sabong, you must educate yourself in every aspect of the sabong
sport or game. that’s the first key to success.
You know very well that most of these guys did not go to school and getting answers to your
mathematical questions will bring you nowhere. What are you trying to prove, amigo?
Personally, if you would ask me that question, I might think that you are muy loco en la
cabeza. Why? I am not that meticulous to be bothered by the centavo differences of the two
bets. What is important is, my bets are squared and I know which odd I am on. Anyway I
dont bet that big.
If your betting millions or hundred thousands then the differences of the odds will now
matter.
Maybe you are one of the big time bettors Mr. Yap. If that is so, please accept my apologies.
If not, I think your analysis SUCKS!
Lastly, you mentioned that you have PERSONALLY seen a lot of people lost their fortunes
in gambling. Please substantiate your statement by naming names here. If not, I will tend to
believe that what you are saying is hearsay. :o

I very very respectfully disagree with you Mr. Yap. It is not your nature not to respond or
rebut immediately. What happened? Cat got your tongue? :D

“willingness to learn”…gallos locos.
part of this key of educating yourself is this: don’t believe something because someone says
so; always investigate and prove things to yourself; and then, after that, pick up only the
views or ideas you think you could use and help you. to be a success, you must educate
yourself to do these things.
educating oneself is improving oneself. educating yourself applies in your profession, trade,
craft, and in sabong. educating oneself is an ongoing non-stop business, 24/7/52. nowadays,
you sell yourself every day to your boss or employer. workers, employees, supervisors,
managers and entrepreneurs who do not educate themselves on their jobs or business do not
last long. to last long in sabong and be a success, you must educate yourself. you must learn
the basics, the fundamentals, because they are the ones that really matters.
next, we would go to the 2nd key to success, that is, betting strategy. tsampoy has his
“constant betting amount” strategy, or (if we use ten units as a start), 10, 10, 10,
10…strategy? am I right, tsampoy?
whats yours?

My betting depends on my opinion of my bird and then, my opinion of the opponent. My best
bet only gets 33000 and my so-so gets 11000. I stay in this range and adjust depending on
how i see the kalaban.

disclaimer: our beloved sport of sabong includes gambling, and in a clean, fair, and honest
gambling, there is no such thing as a sure winning play, just smart, (I call them: “born
winners’ play”), to be a success, and stay a success.
this key has nothing to do with regla or gamblers fallacy. scientifically and reality wise, the
next fight, or sultada, assuming everything is clean, fair, and honest, is an “independent”
event, which means that the next fight or sultada has nothing to do with the last ones, no
matter how much coincidences you had recorded in your regla listahan or regla observation
(e.g., talo lahat ang talisain). i see this regla system all the time, especially in baccarat, and
also, in sabong. (well, what the heck, it’s a free country. if people wants to use the gamblers
fallacy, let them, let them be happy. they may not be a success, but they are happy. challenge:
if your gamblers fallacy is true, you should be a rich sabongero, maybe a billionaire by now.
are you?)
i would rather believe that there are lucky days, and that there are unlucky days. how would
you know if its your lucky day, or not. simple. when you are winning more fights/bets than
you are losing, or when you have your capital intact plus winnings, (or when you are
spending the evening with the most beautiful and sexiest chick around (another winning
scenario, lol). just like in business or investing, you must maximize, make your money—your
winnings--work for you, or take maximum advantage of your return on investment or your
lucky days, so that at the end of the business or sabong year or season, you would end up a
success—in the black.
going back, and with all due respect to our friend tsampoy, constant, the same bets, is for the
born losers, and is, after all, quite boring. when your luck strikes, you would be like the lady
dice shooter who made about 15 consecutive passes or wins, won about 50 bucks, while the
rest of the players won tens of thousands.
and betting more and more when losing, to recoup your loses, (or to win 1 or 2 meager units
while playing a huge bank roll), during your unlucky days is a sure way to disaster, especially
when you hit that inevitable losing streak. that’s the way born losers bet--betting more and
more when losing. born winners are simply the wise and smart opposite. they bet smaller and
smaller, up to their minimum (or starting) bet, when losing; and they bet more and more and
more when winning. why not enjoy the thrill of the game by progressively betting more and
more when winning, when you are cooking them with their own money or mantika, and see
how far your guts and your winnings, up to sky is the limit, would take you.
cockfighting—2nd key to success: make your money—your winnings--work for you. bet
smaller and smaller, up to your minimum (or starting) bet, during losing streaks or during
unlucky days; and the opposite, the born winners’ play--bet bigger and bigger during winning
streaks or lucky days. in other words, like in any successful business, minimize your loses
and maximize your winnings.
next (post getting too long), the details of the 2nd key, the born winners’ playing or betting
strategies.
when lucky lady showers her lucky blessings on you—the mother lode of luck, would you be
ready? do you know how to maximize your winnings with the born winners’ betting strategy?
on your luckiest day, what was your starting bet and your most number of consecutive wins
(10 consecutive bets/wins; 15 or more?)? how much was your last bet and how much was
your total winnings?

lucky / unlucky days
Is there such a day that its unlucky to fight your bird but still a lucky day for travesia (betting
on other birds)?
My best lucky streak on travesia was about 12. Started with 1K went up to 5K ending bet at
about 1K. My own bird lost that day.
:(

thanks for the response, bulangero. im sorry you lost your own bird that day. but as i
understand, you win in travesia. so, was it your lucky day or not?
I did not feel lucky with the loss of my bird that day. But the money I took home made my
wife think I was lucky. Heck, she thought my own bird won!
Cheers!

To Buskador,
Please if you can help, dont use words like YOU SUCK when you disagree with somebody. I
know that you can do better that. If you do that USE YOUR TRUE NAME. Do not hide sa E-
Mail. Magpakilala ka.

Dear Abet Busido,
If there is a better word to replace SUCK I am willing to replace it, but alas, my vocabulary is
so limited, so there you are. That is the best I can think of.
On the other hand, I would like to mention that I did not include the word YOU before the
word SUCK. Look again at my post.
If I did that, it means I am attacking yap's persona which is not my intention. I am attacking
his analysis. There is a world of difference there!
The rule of the game here is to use Handles instead of names, why do you want me to use my
name? Did yap use his true name?
I did not use my email address nor any other email addy in this post, how can I hide in it?
Indeed, it is in the abundance of the heart that we speak or write. I pity you. We need to
respect people more, and it seems you can do a lot better next time around, whether you react
to other peoples analysis or spell other peoples name. Again, you are better than that and you
know it... and if you dont your roosters are better off. Thank you.

i love it very much when people, more people, join the discussion, whether they agree or
disagree. and for those who know my postings, i speak my mind, i respectfully agree or
disagree, and i dont shy away from constructive agreement or disagreement or discussion. see
"panggugulang in ulutan in hackfights, is it art or cheating". but somehow, trolls, petty
whiners, and the like would also join in. of course they have the right to free speech. but they
do not have the right to an assurance that they would be responded upon. responding to them,
i think is just a waste of time. now, with the improvements in this forum, thanks to the
owner/s, administrator/s, and the moderator/s, the solution to trolls, petty whiners, and the
like is quite simple. just use the the "ignore list" feature. just go to the person’s profile and
add such person to your “ignore list”. walah! problem solved. they hate being ignored.
I just called the attention of buskador in his reactions to your analysis because COCKERS
that we are should be real gentleman.
A cocker does not use word "sucks" because he respects people.
Any I would just like to take notice of your comment on Pangugulang sa ulutan as the art of
cheating. We need to uplift the sport from its humble beginnings. Matching or paguulot to my
veiw is a SKILL being used by some professional matcher to his advantage. There are lot of
people good at it that is why they do it for a leaving. They look at 4 parameters,
Height, age, quality and weight, and if they have 3 of 4 parameters in their roosters they agree
to fight. Some will go for 4 out of 4 parameters. But they dont cheat. You cheat is when match
a rooster and tie a knife to a another and bigger rooster. You cheat when you match an
inferior rooster then bet to your opponent. In the ulutan fights are made when BOTH parties
agree to fight FAIR AND SQUARE and if their is no OTHER motive behind the matching
NO ONE IS CHEATING. YAP,my friend, a TRUE PROFESSIONAL COCKER uses skills.
CHEATS are not allowed in the cockpits because if they do, they are courting trouble.

abet, your point is well taken and i respect your view. the "timbangan ulutan na" topic has
been discussed quite extensively before. all i would say now is, i still believe that "timbangan
ulutan na" in all our cockfights, including our hackfights, would be for the good and for the
improvement of our sport. timbangan ulutan na.

now. back to the keys. to make the discussion livelier, (so we could compare the different,
born winners’ playing or betting strategies with your winning streak experience):
our friend bulangero has a winning streak of 12 wins in travesia. is this the longest winning
streak experience among all our friends out there?
on your luckiest, longest winning streak, what was: (1) your most number of consecutive
wins (10, 12, 15 or more); (2) your starting bet for the streak; (3) your last winning bet for the
streak; and (4) how much was your total winnings for the streak?

yap,
my question for you is when will you know that you have a lucky day before you roll the
dice?
coz in my cocking experience, i win in streaks as well as i lose in streaks too. would that be
an indicator that my lucky days are coming?

talahib, how is olongapo? i love olongapo, so is subic, with a passion.
"my question for you is when will you know that you have a lucky day before you roll the
dice?". you dont. you dont know when you will have a lucky day or a winning streak. your
lucky day or your winning streak appears unexpected, just like those nice, lovely looking
chicks out there, (where the east meets the west). i hope i answer your question.

please let me say my humble opinion in Tagalog.
"ang gumagawa ng swerte o malas sa buhay ng isang tao ay walang iba kundi ang kanyang
sarili."
I think this thought is un-contested. y? when you gamble (of course by money), you can only
say that you are lucky when you went home winning but if not, you would say you're not or
"malas". you should not give to much weight on the winning streak but instead, you should
focus on the final outcome. let say you won your first four fights in cockfighting and you
decided to put all your money including your capital into your last fight. unfortunately, you
lost! by then, your may say "malas", forgetting already the 4 straight wins... in gambling, we
should learn the word " CONTROL" to make us LUCKY...if we don't know how to control
yourself in gambling, you will always be in "MALAS" side... WHEN YOU LOST
HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS, LEARN TO STOP. when we do that, we can still say we
are LUCKY enough because if not, we might go home empty handed and dont' have anything
to bring for our KIDS or to our FAMILY....
