1. SCOPE
This specification covers the recommended requirements for manufacturing of manganese pans for apron
feeders.
In order to prolong the service life of these pans and minimize any operational issues, this document
provides recommended practice for manufacturing and inspection. This document must always be used in
conjunction with the appropriate manufacturing drawings. In case of any contradictory statements between
this document and the drawings, the statement provided on the drawing prevails. The below figure shows a
pan mounted on the track chain.
2. MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS
Material for the feeder pan shall be as per ASTM A128/128M, Grade B2 austenitic manganese steel with
the following chemical requirements.
Test reports with chemical composition shall be supplied for each heat poured with material accountability
for the apron feeder pans.
The pattern maker / foundry must ensure that sufficient stock is incorporated into the pattern to allow for the
required machining on the apron feeder pan casting.
The castings shall be heat treated as per clause 5 of ASTM A128/128M to achieve the desired physical
properties.

3. TOLERANCES
The casting shall be straight & true within ±3mm from a true flat bottom plane. Machining SHALL NOT
commence until the casting is straightened to achieve these parameters. It may be necessary to utilize a
press brake or other mechanical straightening devices to meet the required flatness / straightness
requirements.
Dimensional checks shall be made on all critical dimensions prior to machining. The use of templates or
gages may be employed to aid in determining the dimensional accuracy. Example illustrations are shown
below.

STANDARD 225668-ESC 1
Machining is critical for proper assembly and operation of the feeder pans. Care must be taken to ensure
that the machining requirements including the drilling of the mounting holes are according to the drawing
dimensional requirements and are within the requirements of relevant specification i.e. ISO 2768-mk.
4. INSPECTION
100% visual inspection(VT) is required on every apron feeder pan. Feeder pans shall be free of any surface
Hot tears or Shrinkage cracks. Slight surface gas / porosity is acceptable provided any single indication

does not exceed 1.5 mm in diameter. Accumulative porosity clusters shall not exceed 10mm within a
2
surface area of one cm . The depth of any of these indications shall not exceed 10% of the casting
thickness at any given location.
A minimum of three (3) pans at one time are to be installed on a pan set up fixture. The pan set up fixture
should be an accurate representation of how the feeder pans would be assembled & set in operation on the
actual feeder. The fixture must be set up level and square. The mounting holes and/or the mounting studs
for the apron feeder pans shall be represented in the fixture as would be assembled on to the actual track
chain. An example of the pan fixture arrangement for verifying the pitch of the pans, clearance of the
leading and trailing edges and the clearance of the casting outboard edges or wing tips is shown below.
Surface preparation of the apron feeder pan castings shall be to Sa 2 ½ per ISO 8504 followed by 60 to 80
microns of prime coat. Machined surfaces shall be coated with a suitable long term rust inhibitor such as
Tectyl 890 or suitable equivalent.
Shipping of the pans shall be in a manner as to prevent any damage and optimize shipping volume. One
method that can be utilized is the use of all thread affixed to a pallet extending through the holes in a
channel & secured with bolting hardware. The pallet must be shrink wrapped to further secure the feeder
pans (see attached illustration below).
Note: All thread rod should be trimmed to the approximate height of the securing structural member to
prevent any type of physical injury that may be imposed during handling or shipping
