MECH 331 Fluid Mechanics

Problem Set No. 5

1. A rectangular tank, 20-m long, 4-m wide and 3-m deep, on a truck is completely open at
the top. If it is initially filled to the top, how much liquid will be spilled if it is given a
horizontal acceleration of 0.3g in the direction of its length?

2. An open tank 1.82m square, weighs 3,425 N and contains 0.91m of water. It is acted
upon by an unbalanced (net) force of 10,400 N parallel to a pair of sides. What must be
the height in meters of the sides of the tank so that no water will be spilled?

3. A closed rectangular tank 3m long and 2m wide is filled with water to a depth of 1.5m.
The tank moves in a direction along its longer dimension, with an acceleration of 5m/s2.
Calculate the pressure on the bottom at both ends.

4. A 1 x 1 x 1m tank is 50% filled with oil (s = 0.82) and the remaining

is water. When it is translated vertically upward at 5.10 m/s2, what
is the pressure at the bottom?

5. A cubical tank is filled with 2.5 m of oil (s = 0.752) as shown (right).

Find the force in N on (a) the side and (b) the bottom of the tank
when the acceleration is 4.9 m/s2 downward.

6. An open vessel of water accelerates up a 30° plane at 2m/s2. What is the angle the
water surface makes with the horizontal?

7. A closed cylindrical vessel of 1m diameter and 2m height contains water filled to a depth
of 1.5m. If the vessel is rotating at 20 radians/sec, how much of the bottom of the vessel
is uncovered?

8. If in problem #7, the cylinder is open at the top? Will there be water spillage if rotated
at the same rotational speed? Will the bottom be uncovered? If so, how much area?
9. An open cylindrical tank having a radius of 0.30m and a height of 1.20m is full of water.
How fast will it be rotated about its vertical axis if 75% of its volume is spilled out?

10. An open cylindrical tank that has a diameter of 90cm and 60cm high, contains water. It
is rotated at a speed such that it leaves a circular space 30-cm diameter at the bottom of
the tank. Assuming that no water was spilled, what was the height of water in the tank
when it was stationary?

11. A small pipe 60-cm long is filled with water and caped at its ends as shown (below left).
If placed in a horizontal position, how fast must it be rotated about a vertical axis, 30cm
from an end, to produce a maximum pressure of 70 kg.cm2.

12. A closed 1-m diameter, 2-m high vertical cylinder is

completely filled with gasoline whose density is
740kg/m3 as shown (above right). The tank is rotated about its vertical axis at a rate of
90 rpm, while being accelerated upward at 5 m/s2. Determine the difference between
the pressures at the centers of the bottom and top surfaces.

13. For the same set-up in #12, determine the difference between the pressures at the
center and the edge of the bottom surface.

14. A U-tube shown (below right) is filled with a liquid of specific gravity 1.25 to a height of
15cm in both the limbs. It is rotated about a vertical axis 15cm from one limb and 30cm
from the other. If the speed of rotation is 60rpm, find the difference in the liquid levels
in the two limbs.

15. Also, for problem #14, find the pressure at

points M and N at the base of U-tube.
