The national seminar on ‘Empowering Women Through Entrepreneurship was held at the brig.

Rajinder Singh Auditorium, university of Jammu which was organised by the Skill and
Entrepreneurship Development Centre & Centre for Women's Studies, in collaboration with the
National Commission for Women and Government of India on 22 Jan, 2020. The event began with
the lightning of the lamp followed by welcoming the students, guests, scholars and faculty members
who attended the programme.

The event started with welcoming of all the dignitaries and the audience which included students,
faculty and women from Jammu University. Prof. Sameer Gupta greeted the audience with a warm
and prompt welcome by saying that India is the 3rd largest country for start ups after usa and china.
He discussed that women have an important role in start ups and entrepreneurship as women own
about 35% of all start ups. He said that the Women constitute 14% of the total entrepreneurs in
India of which 58% started the business between the age of 20-30 years.

Later, Ms. Meeta Rajivlochan, member secretary ,NCW addressed the audience with some facts and
issues by mentioning that women have been an important part of society since a very long time. She
stated the examples of maria mosamani and Jodhabai, the wife Akbar who looked after the trade
and business along with her husband. She also citied many popular historical examples of razia
sultana and Rani laxmibai whose contribution to indian history has been very prominent. She later
also presented the examples of modern contemporary women who have done significant
contribution in their respective fields such as Arundhati Bhattacharya and Shikha Sharma.

The event was followed by the welcoming and inaugural speech by the Hon’ble vice chancellor,
prof. Manoj K. Dhar who welcomed and addressed the audience by citing the example of the
famous kiran mazumdar- shaw who is an Indian billionaire entrepreneur in the field of
biotechnology. He also added that a lot of women’s contribution goes unnoticed as it fails to get
political and economical news and attention. He then shared some of “ the key element for
empowering women” which were : access to get adequate resources, agency and measurement of
achievement.

The event was carried off by inviting various women entrepreneurs who shared their success story
and their journey towards establishing successful business in their respective fields. The guest
speakers included Ms. Varuna Anand, co-founder of the splendour of Kashmir, Ms. Aarti mahajan
dhingra, founder shape ‘n’ smile – the fitness studio. Ms. Sakshi beri, owner of caliberi and finally
Ms. Geetika kohli Amla, Author & Entrepreneur. These women shared their inspiring and heartfelt
journey and various struggles they went through while setting up their business and making it reach
a great height.

Where ms. Aarti said that failures were the biggest stepping and learning stones of her life and
emphasised on how people espically women take their health and fitness for granted because of the
responsibilities she has. She is currently playing multiple roles in improving the health and fitness of
women in jammu.

ms. Sakshi who is the only calligrapher of jammu also shared her hard and journey from converting
her hobby into a profession. She said that due to the unique and different profession she had to face
a lot to hardships while spreading awareness about her work.
ms. Varuna Anand shared her story by saying that she always had entrepreneurial skills in her veins.
she motivated the young women audience by saying that faith, patience, hardwork and
perseverance are the key element to a business’s success. She also quoted the famous Hilary clinton
who said “ women are the largest untapped reservoirs of the world”.

Lastly, ms. Geetika kohli shared her story by addressing various issues that a young women has to
face such as lack of adequate resources, discrimination, societal and cultural pressures along with
lack of exposure which hinders the overall growth of women. She ended by saying that feminity is an
asset similar to masculinity.

After a short tea break the event was thrown to a panel discussion wherein the members included
ms. Meeta Rajivloachan (member secretary NCW), dr. sameer gupta ( director, the business school),
mr. shameem Ahmad wani (special secretary, finance), Divya Bhushan (special convener of JKEDI).
The panel discussion was moderated by Poorvi Gupta(Senior Correspondent of Shethepeople).

The discussion majorly talked about issues such as women safety and women empowerment as to
how all the cultural & social stereotypes can be broken to bring the women of india forward.

Ms. Vishva raksha gave her inputs on the discussion by saying that a women’s path to success is
filled with many hurdles & responsibilities. She further added that women face often criticism such
as “ab chapati kon banayga”. She also gave the ideas to promote self confidence, self faith and
sisterhood.

Ms. Divya also took part in the discussion by sharing various govt. schemes, plans and opportunities
which can provide the people esp. women with adequate soft loans and support at minimum rates.

Mr. sameer gave ideas to make a business sustainable. He said that risk taking , networking and
willingness are the key elements to make any business successful.

Mr. shameen further added in the discussion that activities are taking place at all regional and
national levels in order to provide people with effective training, skills and support.

The event ended with audience engagement and open house discussion wherein the issues and
opinions of the women in the audience were addressed followed by lunch.
