1. Introduction:
By definition of International Karting Commission – Federation International
Automobile (CIK-FIA[1]), a kart is defined as a land vehicle with or without a
bodywork, with 4 non-aligned wheels in contact with the ground, two of which
control the steering while the other two transmit the power. Its main parts are the
chassis (which consists of a body frame work that is made up of a set of bent steel
pipes that are welded together) with an engine, four wheels and tires attached on it. It
can either have suspension system or not.
The first go-kart was simply a cart consisting of wheels and handles jointed together
as children pushed from behind when learning to walk. Go-kart was invented in
California by Art Ingels [2] and Lou Borelli using 100cc mower engines and strong
steel frames. Go-karts emerged in India in 2003 from MRF. Kart racing is generally
accepted as the most economical form of motor sport & there is ample amount of
scope to step forward in motorsport field.
For our project we have designed a Go-kart powered by 4 stroke Single cylinder Air
cooled 150cc engine vertically rear mounted; Bell crank steering mechanism;
Without suspension.

2. Objective:
Our objective is to provide a better solution to currently existing go kart by analysis
of pre-existing information and improved design and manufacturing methodologies.
We not only got to learn basic and somewhat advanced mechanical practices but also
learned how to be a team player, how to act on given situations and overcome
obstacles during the course of project.
Personally we learned how to achieve the most optimised solution & got first-hand
experience to work as a vehicle dynamics engineer in designing the steering system
of our Go kart.

As of now we have realised that teamwork in the most crucial element for our
project, by smartly distributing the work load to members according to their area
expertise we have experienced ourselves working at maximum capacity.
3. Constructional Progress
 Chassis construction:
The plan of chassis was designed on Solidworks 2016 and then optimised with
removal of unnecessary members, hence helping us in weight reduction of the
overall vehicle. We have successfully build the entire chassis using 1inch
diameter AISI 1018 metal pipes with circular cross section joined using TIG
welding process. There are various mountings provided on this structure to
fasten several parts of the vehicle and support the main bodywork and engine.
 Wheel Hub:
As we have used front wheel steering system hence installed two knuckles with
wheel hub with desired angles like camber, caster and king pin inclination as
previously stated in our final project report at front wheels. Although every
precaution was made to get the angles as accurate as possible but due to
unavailability of instruments with high precision, error in the acceptable range
was compensated and corrected by cold beating the joint with strong hammer
force.

 Engine clean-up, tuning and maintenance:

We used a 150cc single cylinder air cooled engine from Bajaj pulsar itself.
This engine is coupled with a 5 speed reduction manual gear box. The
engine and gear box together is a single assembly which weights 30kg.The one
we received was not functioning properly hence we got it serviced from the
local garage and then self-tuned for our operation. We diagnosed that due to
prolonged unused state of bike made engine oil leaking into the chamber and
jamming up the piston, new piston was installed with new gaskets and then
engine checked OK in its working condition.
As we still have to install all the mounting points on chassis hence engine is
now resting followed by time to time inspection and proper maintenance.
4. Remaining procedures
We yet have to follow several procedures before submitting our final prototype:
A. Mounting of engine and securing it with nuts and bolts
B. Mounting of rear axle and disc brake assembly.
C. Roll over bar and steering assembly mounting
D. Paint job and electrical wiring.
E. Fixing tires
F. Final inspection and several quality control tests
