Implementation
(i) Show students slide 1 of Humpty Dumpty PowerPoint. Who and what was Humpty
Dumpty? What happened to him?
(iii) Teacher dramatically tells the story of the “true” origin of the Humpty Dumpty
nursery rhyme. Humpty Dumpty not an egg, but a powerful canon used by the Royalist
during the siege of Colchester in 1648. The nursery rhyme tells the story of the canons
fall from the wall during an exchange of fire (see information sheet for the details).
Pupils discuss whether or not they believe the story to be true (it is not) and express opinions (hands
up). Teacher then informs the students that although the Roundheads did indeed besiege Colchester
in 1648, Humpty Dumpty the cannon and One Eyed Thompson is pure fiction.
Go over definitions of fact, opinion and belief. Ask pupils to give examples (hands up).
Students match the words ‘fact’, ‘belief’ and ‘opinion’ (slide 4 of PowerPoint)
For lower ability students print out Slide 4 and allow them to do it as a cut and paste exercise in their
book.
Group Work (10 minutes)
Pupils work in groups of four or five. Each group is given a piece of A3 poster paper which they
divide into three columns as below. Each group is also given a set of statements and working as a
group, place them in the correct column.
Teacher gives his/her own profile on the PowerPoint (you will obviously need to change this to make
it about yourself).
As students what they think the word ‘faith’ means (Slide 6 of PowerPoint). Students note down the
definition.
Students answer questions on Slide 7 of the PowerPoint. Some students will feed back answers.
