Alfredo Santos Buenaventura was born in Santa Maria, Bulacan in 1929 and studied
music at the University of Santo Tomas, the Centro Escolar University and the Gregorian
Institute. His career brought him teaching appointments at the Philippine Women’s
University, St. Scholastica’s College and at the Centro Escolar University, where he
became Dean of Music at the conservatory. He was formerly organist at the Metropolitan
Cathedral in Manila and, among many other honours, received the Republican Cultural
Heritage Awards in 1964 and 1972 and the Bonifacio Centennial Awards.
He grew up in a musical environment and, drawn by his fascination with trumpets and
trombones, he became a band member in his hometown at a young age and eventually
one of the band’s arrangers and conductors. He was one of 20 boy sopranos of the Tiples
at Sto. Domingo Church from where he received his first significant musical training. At
that time, he also wrote his first composition, Danza.
Alfredo Buenaventura holds the sole distinction among Filipino composers of having
composed five full-length operas. His compositions combine contemporary and
conventional styles, and contain melodies that are simple and understandable, while
using contemporary harmonies that enhance their complexity.
His compositions and other creative works have been performed abroad by international
virtuosi and religious groups. Many of his compositions are based on Filipino heroes,
legends, and epics. He uses native songs, both tribal and folk, as themes of his music
compositions. A number of his compositions make use of Filipino indigenous instruments.
Alfredo Buenaventura’s Musical Style
Alfredo Buenaventura has composed a great number of songs, all varying in genre. He
wrote opera music, symphonic music, vocal music, chamber music and concertante
music.
