Read the text below. For questions 54 to 58, choose the best answer (a, b, c, or d).
1 When I was young, I didn’t really appreciate my parents, especially my mom. I always
thought she was too strict and we would often fight. I guess most teenagers argue with their
parents at some time, but with us it was almost everyday. One problem was that I just don’t
think she understood me. She always said I didn’t respect her, which just wasn’t true.
5 I had a curfew and I hated it. When I was late, they would ground me for a week and that
just made me even angrier. They’d nag me about my appearance and how messy my
room was, but at least they never stopped my allowance.
Now our relationship is really good and she’s my best friend in many ways. If I need
advice she’s certainly the first person I turn to.
10 However, if I have children in the future, I think I’ll do things very differently. To start with, I
don’t think I’ll give them too many rules. If you do, all they’ll do is disobey you. It’s also
important to listen to their opinions and talk honestly to them. I still think we’ll fight, but not
too often.

Part 3 Section 3
Read the text below. For questions 87 to 92, choose the best answer (a, b, c, or d).
1 Water is one of the most precious commodities in the world. Without water there is no life.
For many of us, water is something we take for granted; we turn on the faucet and there it
is; we open a bottle and pour ourselves a glass of mineral water to drink; we take a
shower in the morning.
5 Often the only time we hear about water is in connection to severe weather, either a flood
or a drought. However, according to the World Health Organization WHO 884 million
people do not have access to safe drinking water and more than two and a half billion do
not have access to adequate sanitation. Around 4,000 children die every day from
drinking dirty water. Can you imagine that? That’s one child every twenty seconds!
10 In recent years, the term “water footprint” has started to be used as a way of measuring
water consumption. In the developing world, the average person uses around 10 liters of
water a day for their drinking, washing, and cooking. In comparison, the average
European uses 200 liters while in the USA the figure is 400 liters.
It’s predicted that in the next 20 years humans will use 40% more water than they do now.
87 How is water described in the opening 90 What does water footprint in line 10 mean?
c Something we don’t really need c The water people use for washing
