Wild about life
DONNA Zabinskas is Moorabool Shire Councils 2015

Citizen of the Year.
Ms Zabinskas founded the wildlife rescue organisation
BADGAR (Ballarat and District Greendale Animal
Rescue) 17 years ago and has helped rescue, rehabilitate
and release tens of thousands of native animals including
koalas, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, raptors, birds
and more.
Its a real honour and extremely unexpected. Therere
so many other people worthy of it (Citizen of the Year),
Ms Zabinskas said.
Although she started the shelter with her family,
BADGAR now has 12 animal foster carers and five
dedicated volunteers who work from the not-for-profit
organisations headquarters in Greendale.
Its a beautiful group of people Im working with. Its
like one big happy family, she said.
She said BADGAR managed on average four or five
phone calls every day, but during busier periods it rose to
20 30 calls, including calls from Ballarat and Melbourne.
She works closely with the CFA, Parks Victoria and
DEPI to co-ordinate wildlife rescue throughout bushfire
emergencies and trains people all over Victoria in
wildlife rescue and fireground rescue. Generally my
only holidays are going out to different firegrounds, she
said.
As well as her involvement with wildlife, Ms Zabinskas
is the 3rd lieutenant at Greendale CFA, the secretary/
treasurer of the Greendale Fire Brigade support group
and has worked for the Department of Human Services
as a carer for the intellectually disabled for 30 years.
She said she kept going because she was passionate
about animal welfare and knowing that theres an
animal in need.
All the people around me also keep me going. Ive
always been community minded. I just think that people
should be involved. If they are then the community is
better off. There are some really good people in Moorabool
Shire. My neighbours are really tolerant, considerate and
passionate about wildlife, she said.
The apple doesnt fall far from the tree for this motherof-three. Her adult children have forged careers as a zoo
keeper, a vet nurse/practice manager and a CFA captain/
builder.

the death of his younger
brother Nathan in 2011. After he died it took me a few
months to pull myself out

of a slump, and I realised
I could be negative or do
something positive.

culture for clients through a
good screening process.
Were pretty particular on
who comes into Royale Fitness. We will bring in people
who want to do the work.
We want to create a win-win
atmosphere for our clients
and trainers, he said.
I do a lot of videoing and
writing about nutritional
and training advice to help
people stay motivated.

Court in action

A Bacchus Marsh woman
who was close to eight times
over the legal blood alcohol
limit, has lost her license for
a period of four years. Jacqueline Allen, 38, admitted
to consuming two bottles
of vodka before travelling
down the Western Highway and crashing into a
guardrail on April 9, 2014.
Police were contacted after
concerned drivers witnessed
the accused swerving between lanes. Allen was intercepted near Wallace, where a
blood alcohol sample of .388
was registered. She pleaded
guilty to drink driving, failing to wear a seatbelt and
dangerous driving, and received a 12-month community corrections order with
conviction.
Meanwhile, a Bacchus
Marsh dog owner may be
charged with breaching the
Domestic Animals Act, after

his two Staffordshire Terriers allegedly attacked an
alpaca, resulting in its death.
The two dogs, which were
not legally registered under
the Moorabool Shire council, were seen attacking the
alpaca in June 2014, shortly
before it was euthanised
due to horrific wounds. The
dog owners defence lawyer
stated that the identity of the
animals had, and could not
be 100 per cent proven. The

Alleged Gordon arsonist,

Robert Wallace has been
granted a further adjournment in order to finalise his
psychiatric analysis. Wallace will plead guilty to one
charge of arson after attempting to set the Gordon
General Store on fire in 2014,
and will appear at the Sunshine Magistrate Court on
February 3.
Users fight council for

Nearly one hundred users
of a lane have signed a petition asking council to cancel
an agricultural licence in
Myrniong.
The Wednesday 3 December council meeting saw
councillors vote to officially
receive the petition and have
council officers prepare a report on the issue.
The 96 users of the section
of Lohs Lane in Myrniong,
which is under the licence
area, signed the petition
which also came with three

letters of support from emergency service agencies.
A resolution from a council
meeting in May 2014 reads
That Council considers it
not desirable or in the public
interest that (the agricultural
licence) be cancelled.
The signatories on the petition are requesting that
Council consider declaring
that Lohs Lane is not an unused road, stating that they
have a legitimate purpose to
use the road and require unobstructed 24/7 access.

he was injured during an
unintentional collision. The
accident left him with a spinal injury and symptoms
including intense pain in his
neck and lower back and no
feeling in his lower legs.
Eight months later he has
surpassed doctors expectations and walks unassisted
despite still no feeling in his
lower legs.
The pain is still the same
and not getting any better,
but Im doing rehabilitation
and trying to get into the
Ballan Hospitals rehab centre every day. I want to keep
proving them all wrong, he
said.

lost in the
Lerderderg
A very dehydrated 43 year
old Roxburgh Park woman,
not wearing shoes, has been
found by campers in the Lerderderg State Forest.
Missing for three days,

police said emergency service crews stretchered the
woman out of the forest to
waiting ambulance crews
around 11.30am on Sunday
18 January.
The area is pretty rough

and the track was also pretty
slippery and not very well
defined.
Search and Rescue crews,

that included two vehicles
from the Bacchus Marsh
SES, reached the woman on
Sunday morning around
8.30am, after responding at
2am.
Bill Robson from BM SES

said the terrain in that area
was steep and rough resulting in a very challenging
and time consuming rescue
operation.
Crews used a specialist

pulley system supplied by
Victoria Police, as well as
man power to get the patient
to safety.
The Rescue spanned several hours and was exhausting for all crews involved,
he said.
The woman was taken to

the Northern Hospital in a
stable condition after suffering from exposure and
minor injuries.

AVENUE OF HONOUR - BACCHUS MARSH
TREE INSPECTIONS AND PRUNING WORKS
Council will be undertaking aerial inspections and tree pruning works in the Bacchus
Marsh Avenue of Honour from Tuesday 27 January 2015 to Friday 6 February 2015.
These important tree works will be undertaken as part of the ongoing commitment to
the Bacchus Marsh Avenue of Honour Strategic Management Plan.
Council periodically undertakes these works to limit the risk to public safety and
extend the life of the trees within the Avenue of Honour.
Works on the trees will be conducted Monday to Friday only during the hours of
8.00am and 5.00pm.
Trafc and other disruptions will be kept to a minimum.

Dr Christine Durham is the 2015 Australia Day ambassador for Moorabool.

Dr Durham will visit Moorabool Shire
at the Australia Day celebrations to be
held at the Public Hall, Bacchus Marsh
on January 26, 2015 as part of the Australia Day ambassador program.
Dr Durham was named the 2014 Victorian Senior Australian of the Year. The
life of this gifted teacher was turned
upside down after she sustained a
severe brain injury in a car accident.
Determined to return to teaching, she
used her experience of acquiring a
brain injury to inspire her students to
think. Her pioneering approach and

subsequent book, Chasing Ideas, led
her to gain an international reputation
as a professional learning presenter.
Dr Durham also wrote an autobiography, Doing Up Buttons, which was a
deeply personal yet practical account
of acquired brain injury. At age 67, she
completed a Doctor of Philosophy at
RMIT University, examining ways to
empower people with acquired brain
injury.

an important role in local celebrations.

Myrianthis has been presented with a Certificate of
Appreciation for his work
for a council committee.
Mayor Paul Tatchell presented Mr Myrianthis with
the acknowledgment, at the
December council meeting,
for his dedication and commitment to the Audit and
Risk Advisory Committee.
But for Mr Myrianthis it
was all in a days work he
already volunteers on the
Greendale Reserve Committee, on school boards and
also served as Treasurer on

the Ballan Kindergarten
Committee.
I was reported to external
and internal audit bodies of
the council, as well as risk
management reports I then
provided advice and recommendations, he said of his
role.
Well qualified for the job,
Mr Myrianthis is an accountant who had served
as an auditor at the Auditor
Generals office, as well as
auditing for Victoria Police.
Having served 10 years on
the committee, he has now
moved on since being replaced in the paid role as his

personal work has evolved
into his own accounting
and bookkeeping business

from his home, and which is
a bit removed from the auditing area.
I was quite excited - it was
a bit hard leaving the role,
but I felt appreciated for the
work that I did.
I like the idea of helping
out in the community, it just
makes you feel like youre a
part of it.

Aussie has the

BACCHUS Marsh motherof-three Dyna Eldaief has

become an international
television star on The Taste
Middle East.
Mrs Eldaief is currently appearing on Al Nahar television across the Middle East
as a cooking contestant on
the popular reality television series.
Up until they sent me a
plane ticket two days before
I flew out (September 30,
2014), I thought it was all a
hoax, Mrs Eldaief said.
The media company pursued me for about a year, but
I kept ignoring them because
I thought it was a hoax. Then
after I had my third baby
and had just come home,
I was up at 2am and got a
phone call from Lebanon.
She said her parents were
both Egyptian and she
wanted to document her
mothers recipes before she
passed away in 2005. She
then started posting YouTube clips and blog posts of
those family recipes, which
caught the attention of the
Lebanese television production team.
Mum never operated off
recipes, just out of her head,
so it took me ten years to collect the recipes, she said.

Normally there is an application process for the show,
but I was head-hunted.
She said the show was delayed for about eight months
because of extremist group
activity in the Middle East,
and for the safety of everyone it was filmed in Cairo,
Egypt instead of Lebanon.
Mrs Eldaief became one of
35 contestants on the show
which included competitors from Lebanon, Tunisia,
Egypt, Jordan and Saudi
Arabia.
Even though I was born in
Australia, during the whole
show I said I was EgyptianAustralian. My language
was a major barrier because
I didnt speak Arabic until I had my first child and
wanted to speak it to him.
My verbal Arabic is very basic. I couldnt even read my
contract and had to wait for
my dad to read it for me,
she said.
She said during filming
her peripheral senses became heightened because
of the language barrier and
she became very flexible,
even though I normally like
things to be planned.
I made it through the live
auditions and through the

first two group and solo
challenges, when they were
down to about 14 contestants, she said.
It was just surreal, crazy
and awesome. The best
thing about it was the people that I met. We still keep
in touch. People were so interested in Australia and it
really surprised me. I was
so happy to hear how much
they liked Australia and the
people here.
Mrs Eldaief said she flew
home on October 24 and the
program began airing on
Egyptian prime time television on Boxing Day.
Im really excited by it.
Its a life-changer. This sort
of thing doesnt happen to
people like me. The friends
I made in Egypt tell me that
Im really liked over there,
she said.
She said the experience had
encouraged her to pursue
her dreams of publishing
a cookbook of her mothers
recipes.
Its just about doing something and once you start you
never know where it will
lead. You really shouldnt hit
stop just because someone
says what youre doing is too
niche.

Residents of Roch Court and Blow Court in Ballan held an inaugural Christmas street party
on December 22, with up to 45 people attending.
Organisers Bridget Sims and Noela Kersley did a letterbox drop for residents and set up
tables and chairs to encourage residents to come out and mingle.
Ms Sims said some residents had lived in the streets for five years while others had recently
moved there and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
Well look at doing something like this again, she said.
Christmas at CAFS
The Moorabool Community Leadership Program that commenced last October and has 17
participants from across the Shire, donated items prior to Christmas to Moorabool Child
and Family Services (CAFS)
Two representatives from the leadership group presented an array of items to CAFS and
the goods were distributed to the Shires individuals and familes in need two days before
Christmas.
The leadership program is overseen by Moorabool Shire Council.

often think they are adding
value to their home.
But inferior DIY work can
not only make a poor first
impression, but have buyers
worrying about what else

value if the home is overcapitalised that is, more spent

The popularity of DIY has
increased as a result of our
love affair with home improvement programs such

Rules. Business information analysts, Ibisworld, last
year forecast that within five
years Australians would be
spending more than $60 billion a year on home renovation and maintenance. Already spending figures are
close to $55 billion a year.
The analysts said the hardware store sector would
grow most, with projected
growth of 16 per cent. Kitchens, bathrooms and outdoor
areas are most commonly
upgraded.
A recent British survey has
found that poor DIY can
knock up to 11 per cent off
the selling price of a home,
with nine out of 10 homebuyers saying they would

lower their offer if they spotted botched home improvements. Translating those figures to Victoria, that would
mean up to $35,000 off the
regional Victorian median
house price of $324,000 and
about $70,000 off the Melbourne median house price
of $649,000.
A key lesson is that work
should be done well if it is
to add value to a home. That
means being sure you have
the skills and experience for
the tasks and, if not, getting
professional tradespeople to
do the work. Also, it is not
cost-effective and is potentially dangerous to attempt
work such as wiring and
major plumbing jobs.
Real estate agents regularly
see the results of the how
hard can it be? This ranges
from poor painting, often
the result of poor preparation; dangerous decks and
fences with poor joinery
and often lacking planning
permission to second-rate
kitchen and bathroom tiling
and even home-done electrical jobs.
They also see the result of
overcapitalising, so it is important to check with your

But DIY can be fun and satisfying and can add value

the Christmas break, and although numbers were a little
down due to school holidays,
those in attendance enjoyed
being back on the track and
catching up with many of
their friends again.

Hayden Thompson smashes the Javelin record.
Thompson set the first record for 2015, increasing his

own Javelin record by over
4 metres, with a new record
distance of 40.62m.
Competition will continue
this Saturday 24 January, despite the Australia Day long
