INTRODUCTION

“Take all the training you can get: one good idea is all you need to save yourself

years of hard work.” – Brian Tracy

On-the-job-training is a form of job instruction that occur in the worksite while the

employee learning his or her job alongside with more experienced worker. OJT should take

place outside the academic or university area. During the training inexperienced worker

perform or observes real job task being done in the work area. Moreover, on-the-job-

training is more on experiential learning which means a learning through experience. Also,

information learns directly from the job.

On-the-job-training is an activity that a student must perform in order to apply her

knowledge from school to field. It is not just about compliance but also gaining knowledge

on reality’s world aside from theories learned in school. From this, student will be able to

interact different person, practice and develop different skills that could help his/her future

job, identify and overcome his/her weaknesses on work place, and most of all, student will

be able to learn through experiences. Developing skills directly from the job is one of the

good advantages of OJT. Such, when it comes to real job in the future, student has already

knowledge precisely to their chosen field of interest. Thus, the workplace serves as new

venue of learning to the students.

As for the OJT program for Civil Engineering, the students would be trained

according to their chosen field of interest. Students are required to complete such hours of

training. A training supervisor will guide the trainees for them to know how to perform the

obligations and to what standard. Typically, training supervisor will observe and provides

feedback on the performance of the trainee. Also, supervisors help trainees to develop their

attitude towards work and develop engineering skills. Hence, this on-the-job-training

becomes a way of training for future employees and engineers.

Weekly report
(June 24- June 29 2019)

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

On the first day of my on-the-job-training, I was nervous but excited at the same

time. Nervous because I don’t have any idea on what It would be like on field. I only have

the knowledge which is learned from school but the application on how it does correlate to

the field is something I haven’t learned yet. I was also excited for in this entire training, I

will be able to work together with professional engineers, and also the knowledge that they

will impart to us along this journey. First, we had gone to the main office of the ASEEC

which is located at Ayala Center Cebu. Our group was divided and assigned into different

project that the company has. My partner and I were assigned to one of their biggest

projects which is the Grand Residences Condominium.

As we arrived on the project site, we were introduced to our project manager who

is Engr. Edwin Fuentes. That moment, I can feel my heart bursting into so much

excitement. I can see different heavy equipment used in construction that I often see in our

place, a lot of workers in different areas, engineers who are always busy on their table and

also in site, and especially to the on-going high-rise building project. Then on the following

hours, they tagged us along on their inspection on tower 3 of the condominium. They guide

us on what to inspect particularly on architectural inspection since the tower 3 is already

done with the structural works. Also, they had taught us so many things just right on the

first day such as punch listing, terms such as ALEMAK which in the book called as

construction elevator and etch.

On the following day, they had given us tasks or assignment to inspect on tower 3

without them anymore. Our assignment was to list the major balances of works that has

not been finished yet or being done which need to be polished if there are any existing

errors on works. My partner and I had been given same task but different area. Our mentor

9
advised the both of us to go on separate ways on doing our task. According to him, that if

we both go separately, it will be an advantage to the both of us on sharing knowledge we

learned on field given by the short amount of time to learn in our training.

Also, on the following days our other mentor on field Engr. Clarence and Engr.

Frank tagged as along on their inspection on the structural of tower 4. They taught us on

how to read the orientation of the building, counting the stirrups on beams, girders and

columns. I have observed that they have a good manpower. They have different worker in

every part of the building. Such as, on steelworks, frameworks, piping, and other segment

they have different groups of workers who are assigned to. Another, Engr. Frank had given

me tasks on checking the stirrups on beams, girders columns and shear wall. It was tiring

but worth it because I learned and done the task with their supervision.

From my first week of training, I can say that I have learned a lot already. Both

architectural and structural. It exceeds my expectations on how does my first week will go.

They had given us tasks and also taught us on how to do it.

WEEKLY REPORT
(JULY 1- JULY 6 2019)

“For the things we have to learn before we can do them, we learn by doing them.”
-Aristotle

Aristotle is right, that we learn things by doing them. Before this OJT, I asked

myself if I can do this job. If my knowledge is sufficed enough to accomplish things that

will be given to me on this training. In this training, I realized that you don’t need to be

smart at first if you are just starting. Following and learning attentively to our mentor is the

key to success of the training. Hence, the purpose of this training is to learn more.

On the second week of my on-the-job-training, I had learned many things from field

and site office. They taught us about the different papers on managing and running the

project. Sample of this are the different letter to be approved by them such as request letter,

approval letter, and etch. But we are only allowed to read the papers in order to have an

idea or gained knowledge on how the project runs. We are not allowed to sign any of the

paper.

On the other day, Sir Edwin gave us a questionnaire containing Situational and

Technical questions related to the field and to my course. He measured our ideas regarding

from what we have learned in school. I was so nervous and shy because I got only few

answers on the test. Being honest, I told my mentor that I am not familiar with some in the

questions. He told us then, that what we have not answered on the test will be learned on

the field. The questionnaire serves as my anchor on what more to learn on field.

On following days, I continued on doing the given assignment to me. I had

inspected on the major balances of works in tower 3. And inspected on the structural works

on tower 4. Things I have learned in site:

GONDULA – used as paintworks platform in painting the exterior part of the building.

12
LINTEL BEAM - commonly placed on door opening and also used to transmit the loads

to the wall.

STIFFENER COLUMN – used to prevent the wall to collapse in terms of earth movement.

TIEROD – used to hold and tighten the formworks on beams and girders

CONCRETE VIBRATOR – used to avoid honeycomb in concrete pouring to slab, girder

and beams.

ALOMA – small metal beams used in the formworks of slab.

My OJT is not all about the knowledge that I have gained from training but also the

interaction and attitude toward my training mates, mentors and all the people in the field.

At first, I am having hard time on adjusting to this new environment. But I am thankful

that my mentors are very accommodating, they treated us like younger siblings. They

always mind us, and helped us to be comfortable on our training despite of hardship we

sometimes encountered. And also, in this week, we had a simple party to welcomed us

trainees.

WEEKLY REPORT

(JULY 8- JULY 14, 2019)

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”

- Pablo Picasso

Doing things that we do not know how to do is the best way of learning. We learn

from our own experience such, it is a learning that we don’t forget at all. Sometimes

we have to be out of our comfort zone in order to learn something new. We are given

a lot of task that we do not have any idea on how to start, but what most important is

that we have the courage to try it and learn it how to be done.

For this week, Engr. Frank gave me my assignment to check the CHB Wall in tower

4. He wanted me to check if the walls were already plastered. There, I have observed

that most of the walls are not yet finished. Like some parts are already done but there

are partitions that aren’t. He also taught us how to use the gadget which is a laser that

can measure the distance from endpoint to endpoint. Me, Czindy and Rommel were

given a task to observe the concrete pouring to the slab on Tower 4 16th floor.

Another is, I had also inspected on the tower 3 for the major balances again but in

a different area. Since the tower has 35 floors, I was assigned to the 17 th-19th floor.

Punch listing is one of most tiring tasks given to me. I have to checked edges to edges

of the unit in order to determine the unfinished or unpolished part. Also, I had been

scanning some files that are needed on the project. Some of it are reports of every sub-

contractor about their accomplishments on the project. Engr. Frank tagged me along to

their recon with the FODC for the billing of works. Me and my partner have been

working on Sundays or called it overtime because we have only limited time to

accomplished our training.

WEEKLY REPORT

(JULY 15- JULY 21)

“There may be people that have more talent than you, but there’s no excuse for

anyone to work harder than you do.”

This is the last week of our training. Our mentor Engr. Edwin Fuentes took

the three of us, Me, Rommel and Czindy to one of the biggest Government projects of

Cebu City the Cebu City Medical Center. There, our mentor explains to us about the

CCMC. We had to conduct there an inspection in order to identify the major balances

of work of the project. Our team was assigned to the last 3 floors of the building. Our

inspection just not ended by that, but we have to estimate all of the major balances of

the building.

Then, on the next day we had to go again to CCMC to get the revised plan of the

building. Since the building is too big, it will be hard for us to estimate without the

revised plan they made. On the following day, Engr. Giselle assigned us to observed

and check the concrete pouring to the slab on the STP of Tower 4. STP mean Sewerage

Treatment Plan. I had learned from them, that every big project like the GRC should

have a STP because it is one of the requirements that a high-rise building should have.

The team leader of the Tower 4 which is Engr. Frank and Engr. Herrera took me to

their inspection together with the engineers of the FODC which is the general

contractor of the project. There, I had learned about the parts of the structural to be well

inspected. I was very sad that OJT has come to an end. Every day I am challenging

myself on what are the things that I should have learned on this training. I am thrilled

that at this part, maybe, I still have a lot to learn but at least I already have knowledge

which I gained on this training.

17
My mentor told me that, there are a lot of things that we still need to learn but at

some point, we already have an idea to it. I was amazed and moved by the wisdom of

Sir Edwin. For him, its not about being smart or intelligent that makes a great engineer,

but his attitude to work and willingness to learn and accept ideas.

REFLECTIONS

A. Task learned from the theory to the application of the Actual Work/ Task

Assigned

From the theory of Structural Theory 1, I have learned about the right

placement of the reinforcements on the beams and girders. Also, about the

compression side and tension side of the beam where the reinforcement

should be place. My mentor told me that I should master the basic principle

of the theory. Another is the counting of bars, stirrups in all aspect of

structural work which could be on beam, girder, column, shear wall or either

the slab. Also, I have learned about the cutting list and on how does it apply

on the actual work.

B. DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED

1. Preparation of PRE-SIPP require documents

The preparation of our requirements was very exhausting, demanding and

irritating. The CHED has late announced about deploying us students on

our on-the-job-training outside the campus. Enrolment has been exhausting

because of the SIPP requirements that we need to comply first. MOA

signing was the most difficult part of the requirements. The president of the

university, the vice president of academic affairs, and other personnel who

are part of contract signing were busy during the preparation of our SIPP

documents because of the same schedule of graduations for our senior years.

27
2. Performing the task assigned during the internship program

I was having a hard time during the first and second week of my internship.

On the first week, I was nervous and adjusting to the environment. I am not

yet familiar with my mentor and also the other staff. On the second week, I

was having hard time on recalling what they have taught me on the first

week but nevertheless I had managed to complete my task. There are things

that I am not familiar that’s why it makes my task harder but I always make

sure to ask them in order to learn.

3. After the Internship Program

The processing of our certificate of completion was kind of difficult because

the supposed person who was assigned to sign our document were busy. He

couldn’t make it to sign the day after we complete our training. We were

rushing to comeback because the enrollment on the next semester were

about to end.

C. WORKING ENVIRONMENT

The working environment is good. I had learned so much both on field and site

office. My mentor and other senior staff are very approachable and they are

willing to teach us more. Also, the engineers from other offices helped us

regarding to field. They shared their knowledge and experiences about their

work and give us tips in the near future job.

D. CONTIBUTIONS TO THE COMPANY

Through all the task that were assigned to me, I am very much thankful that I

had completed it all. I did all my best to complete every task that they had given.

It must be tiring but I had gained fair knowledge from my assigned task.

28
E. RECOMMENDATION TO THE COMPANY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

BASED ON EXPERIENCES FROM THE INDUSTRY

I would highly recommend AS Enriquez Engineering Consultancy to the future

on-the-job-trainees because they will gain a lot of knowledge from them. Also,

they have the best project such as high-rise building. Another, is their engineers

and workers are very accommodating, helpful and very approachable. They are

willing to help trainees to learn both from field and documents.
