Architectural Approach:
A Case Study of Lower Madapo, Brgy. 5-A,
Bankerohan, Davao City

ABSTRACT
A community should be considered as livable wherein the
needs of the residents are accommodated and provided with a quality
of life. The study focuses on the Purok 17-A, Lower Madapo, Brgy. 5-A,
Bankerohan, Davao City. This study used a qualitative-descriptive
design and interviews the local officials of Barangay 5-A to get factual
answers based on the formulated questions given to them. In addition,
the result of the study came to be lying generally on the process with
the people and local officials involved. Thus, the social issues have
already been raised in consideration especially to the people affected.
INTRODUCTION
Communities everywhere can decide what it is that makes
their public spaces a destination and a safe place to live. Is it through
the street design? A safe place for youth? or a conducive environment
for young students? Usually the answer is more than one of these, but
the right mix is up to the people who resides the place. However, the
conflict comes when the people do not or cannot use the public space
to its optimal purpose, proper waste disposal, despite the LGU’s effort
to maintain the cleanliness of the surrounding. Such was the case with
Purok 17-A, Lower Madapo, Brgy. 5-A, Bankerohan, Davao City.
In view of the above-mentioned dilemmas and
problems, Purok 17-A, Lower Madapo, Brgy. 5-A,
Bankerohan is currently facing. This study will attempt to
address two general issues that could potentially help
enhance the streetscape and neighborhood of the
particular street as well as increase its social viability,
public importance, and practical functionality to which, in
the end, should benefit all the constituents of the
Barangay.

The study’s main goal is to improve and enhance the street


conditions of Purok 17-A, Lower Madapo, Brgy. 5-A, Bankerohan to
make it more efficient, safe and effective multi-functioning place that
people of all ages would enjoy to live within the neighborhood.

Enhancing and redefining the layout of the park
and the street can eventually lead to a better layout for
the neighborhood, which in turn can make the whole
space efficient in use and function. Through this, the
recommendation will be able to serve more viable
options for the community.
The problems faced by this particular street are
common throughout the major streets, intersections, and
public spaces in the city. Successfully addressing the
problems here can eventually create a prototype to
follow when planning to make other public spaces a
better place to live.
Furthermore, upon the request of the Barangay,
this study will be submitted to the office as a reference to
their own proposal of the improvement/redevelopment
of other streets under their jurisdiction.
METHODOLOGY

The research will be a qualitative-descriptive design. An


interview with the officials of Barangay 5-A, Bankerohan was
conducted wherein questions about the recent Barangay issues and
tackling on how to address social issues in the community through
architectural approach. The researcher scheduled an interview and
several questions regarding the problem that was stated. The data
were analyzed through descriptive method by comparing the different
ripostes of the interviewee.

RECOMMENDATIONS

To enhance the street layout and amenities community, the


following recommendations are suggested in a two-phased process.
The first phase involves the enhancement of the venue or the fixed
component of the Barangay: the street and park, and the second phase
is the additional amenities of the event or transitional component: the
additional parks and establishment of materials recovery facility.
Phase 1:
• Relocating streetlight post placed strategically so as to
permit sidewalks to the street to eliminate dark spots
to promote safety and security on the premises
especially to school zones.

• Redefining and revitalizing existing by adding park


amenities to attract and prevent them from playing
along the street that could somehow endanger their
lives. In addition to this, the existing park situated
along the river should be fenced with steel matting so
as not to distract it’s the Davao River’s natural feature.
Phase 2:
• The provision for additional amenities to the
community, this will include parks, sidewalks and
MRF’s. After enhancing the street layout for the
pedestrian access, we can now ensure the safety of the
pedestrian. This will now preempts the potential
danger in traversing the street.
