The key takeaways are an introduction to astrological concepts like the elements, signs, planets and their relationships which are important for understanding magical correspondences.

The three modalities of the elements are cardinal, fixed and mutable.

The seven unique planetary forces referred to are the classical Ptolemaic inner planets - Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

Astrology for

Magicians

VHF Lux Æterna

This presentation is not intended to be a primer on the construction and/or
interpretation of an astrological (natal) chart. Instead, it should be viewed as a sketch of
the materials needed in order to best approach the astrological concepts required for an
understanding of zodiacal correspondences. Knowledge of these concepts WILL lead the
student to a better understanding of an astrological chart.

The planets used herein are the “inner” planets used in the classical Ptolemaic system.
These same planets are used within the Golden Dawn system. Our magick is focused on
the inner world of the magician, so it makes sense that the Outer planets (Uranus,
Neptune, and Pluto) would be excluded, since their influence is generational, societal.

We begin with the elements, because the signs of the zodiac are each phases of
the elements. These phases are termed “modalities” and each element goes
through 3 modalities, creating a total of 12 varieties or “styles”.

Modalities The Fixed signs are also sometimes

• Cardinal called Cherubic. They are associated
• Fixed with the 4 cherubs (Lion, Eagle, Bull
• Mutable and Man.

The Signs
The Signs of the Zodiac are the result
of varieties of the elements. 12
universal, human archetypes which
result from the following formula.
The planets are 7 unique forces, or
expressions of energy.

The
Planets
Dignities and More!
Planetary forces have specific affinities;
likes and dislikes:

Rulership: Authority over those signs

Exaltation: A place of honor in that sign
Detriment: Unease and dislike of the sign

Most planets rule 2 different signs, a day

sign and a night sign. Leo through
Capricorn are day signs, Aquarius through
Cancer are night signs.

Lesser Banishing
Ritual of the
Hexagram

It isn’t always obvious to Neophytes why

they are using the Saturn form of the
hexagram when performing the LBRH.

As the LBRP uses the slowest, most stable

energy (Earth) to banish, so does the
LBRH use Saturn, the planetary kin of
Earth.
Planets and Elements are
different sorts of energy!

The Tree of Life

Understanding the foundations of

astrology will make the Tree of Life
much more approachable.

Most of the sephiroth are associated

with a particular planet.

Every one of the paths on the Tree is

associated with Hebrew letter, and thus
either an element, a planet, or a zodiacal
sign.
Planets
on the Tree
Beginning with Yesod, and
moving up the tree up to Binah,
each Sephira is associated with a
planet.

Saturn is attributed to Binah,

but is also with the Binah-
Chokmah convergence…or
Daath.
The Paths on the Tree

The paths are associated with a Hebrew letter

The
Decans
of the
Tarot

Each of the “small” or

numbered cards of the Tarot is
associated with both a planet
and a zodiacal sign. However,
there’s something more…
Houses

Houses are like the set of a movie. The 1st

House is the set for a movie about Aries. Aries
is the intense onrush of fire. It is ruled by Mars,
the planet of aggression and passion.
So…the movie is like Gladiator, with the set
maybe the colosseum.

Leo is exalted in Aries, so Leo, Fixed Fire is quite

happy there…but what if Venus shows up? She
might like the passion, but all the weapons and
blood is going to leave her cold.
Tarot and the Tree

Each of the small cards of the Tarot is

also associated with one of the
Sephiroth. Ones with Kether, 10s with
Malkuth.

In this context, the Sephira are akin to

Houses. They are a setting. So, to fully
understand a small card, you must
combine the planet and sign, in a
Sephiroth.
