Place: Lucid Illusions
Total Hours Spent Shadowing: 4hours

Observations:
● Medical grade cleaning solution is used to clean all surfaces, it is left on for about 90
seconds before they remove it
● Tables, arm rests, and cords are covered in a protective barrier (some sort of plastic or
plastic wrap)
● Grips are cleaned in an ultrasonic machine, and ultra violet lights
● There is a lot of down time
● Needles are always changed in between clients
● There are different sized needles and different kinds of grips
● Don’t submerge tattoos until they are healed, leave bandage on for 2hours, wash
with antibacterial soap, use unscented lotion
● Nipple piercings are said to be the most painful piercings for men
● For women the most painful piercing depends on the person
● Septum piercings are probably the most complicated to do
● Curved needles are only used for hard to reach places
● Dermals aren’t as complicated as they seem
● Conch Piercing- 16g needle, ball grabber, Ring spreader, straight hemostat, receiving
tube (done on Kyle the apprentice)
● Everything is reusable except needles and piercings (so basically if it has been in the
body it can’t be used again)
● “Pay attention. Don’t suck”- Kyle’s words of advice
● “A bunch of overgrown children that like to draw on people with electric crayons.”-quote
from Chris
● Nobody came in for a piercing so Chris gave Kyle a conch piercing
Reflection:
I learned a lot of interesting things today. Overall this was one of the best experiences of
my life. I enjoyed getting to know the people and the environment. I also learned a lot about the
materials and how to use them and what to do to keep the place clean. This is an amazing
career choice and I love it!
Time: 1-6pm
Date: 9-28-19
Place: Lucid Illusions
Total Hours Spent Shadowing: 5hours

Observations:
● The most piercings Chris has ever done on one person at a time is 14
● Watched a girl get her first tattoo
● Almost everybody has an allergy to nickel
● Surgical stainless jewelry has 0.5% nickel
● If you are allergic to nickel they will move from surgical stainless jewelry to titanium
piercings
● If a tongue piercing is too far forward it can create a lisp
● If you want a career in just piercing it is better to shadow in a big city
● Watched a girl get her sleeve almost finished with an owl
● Watched a girl get a rose and semicolon outline tattoo- she didn’t even flinch
● Watched a guy get a tattoo of a mountain
● Learned about a gauge wheel and metric vs. gauge system

Reflection:
Tattooing is a very time consuming process but it is a wonderful way to express yourself.
They show who you truly are. I have been welcomed into the Lucid Illusions family, they like me
there.
Time: 3:30- 8pm
Date: 10-18-19
Place: Lucid Illusions
Total Hours Spent Shadowing: 4.5hours

Observations:
● Belly button piercing- clamp, 13g needle, jewelry (a young woman got hers done)
● They liked my first drawn tattoo idea for my Eric memorial tattoo
● A woman added onto her tattoo
● They shot Kyle with nerf guns because there was a time where there were no customers
in there
● A friend of theirs came in to get his ears pierced so we “stabbed someone for fun” as the
guy put it, Kyle pierced him.

Reflection:
I enjoy being in this environment. I learned my art is better than I thought and when there
isn’t much to do they make the place fun and feel like home.
Time: 3:50-4:20pm & 12-1:30pm
Date: 10-25-19 & 10-27-19
Place: Lucid Illusions
Total Hours Spent Shadowing: 2hours
I put these both under the same shadowing experience because they were both for the
same thing.

Observations:
Friday I went in to get my tattoo and ended up deciding to change my design slightly so,
I ended up coming in on a Sunday (the only day the shop is closed during the week) to get my
tattoo at noon. The artist, Chase, came in to do my tattoo, it took about an hour and didn’t hurt
as much as I thought it would. It burned a little and felt as if my skin was tearing in a way. I
learned how to make a stencil, and I learned you shave the surface to get rid of bacteria not
only to get rid of hair, then the stencil is laid over a gel. The lines of the tattoo hurt more than the
shading, also the closer it got to bone (wrist area) the more it hurt. Chase said I’m maybe the
8th out of thousands of people that he has let/wanted to draw my own design and he liked it.

Reflection:
I enjoyed getting my tattoo, it is my own art on my body. I was smiling and laughing
through the whole thing. It was a fun experience and I will definitely do it again.
Time: 1:30-5:30pm

● Chase double booked himself on accident so he had to reschedule someone
● A girl came and got snake bites
● Daina got her bridge pierced, it was the first one done in the shop
● Some surface piercings are done without a clamp

Reflection:
Today was fun overall. I got to see a friend and convinced her to get pierced. It was the
first time that piercing had been done in the shop. Everyone in the shop keeps joking about how
I am going to take Kyle’s place
