INTRODUCTION

LAHORE ZOO
Lahore Zoo was established in 1872, one of the largest zoos in Pakistan. It is currently managed
by the Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries department. Today the zoo houses a collection of about
1378 animals of 135 species. Lahore Zoo is thought to be the third or fourth oldest zoo in the
world.

CONDITION OF LAHORE ZOO:

Though Lahore Zoo tops the lists of important recreational places in the city, a dearth of various
recreational facilities has irked visitors at the zoological garden.Empty enclosures and foul smell
welcome visitors in the zoo and inflated prices of eatables and substandard food at the canteen
further add to their miseries. The visitors are seen littering the area with wrappers instead of
using dustbins, as there is no one in the garden to ensure cleanliness on the premises.a zoo
keeper blamed lack of interest on the part of the top zoo administration and also alleged that the
lower staff is negligent in taking care of the birds and animals, which according to him are not
being fed standard food and kept in a safe environment. He further alleged that the animal
keepers usually delay the provision of food to them which causes various health related problems
to them.

VISITORS REVIEW:
The visitors also complained against canteen owners who were charging more rates than
displayed on the list.Zoo Director Hassan Ali Sukhera said that he is trying his best to improve
the situation in the zoo.

SECURITY AND OTHER ISSUES:

Inadequate security arrangements not only for the visitors but also for the animals and birds, poor
cleaning system, insufficient number of public toilets, parking arrangements and lack of other
basic facilities have been observed as the main problems facing the visitors.

ADMINISTRATION MISMANAGEMNET:
An insider blamed the zoo administration for mismanagement, alleging the lower staff for
negligence in taking care of the birds and animals which he, added, were being provided
insufficient and unhealthy feed. He further alleged the officials also were involved in
misappropriations especially in feed theft while weighing the food stuff, purchased by the
concerned section of the zoo.

SURVEY:
In a survey, many visitors complained about empty cages, insufficient number of public toilets,
faulty water coolers and absence of other civic facilities in the zoo in which about 5,000 people
come daily along with their families and children.
WHAT ARE ANIMAL RIGHTS:
Animal rights are the belief that animals have a right to be free of human use and exploitation,
but there is a great deal of confusion about what that means. Animal rights are not about
putting animals above humans or giving animals the same rights as humans. Also, animal
rights are very different from animal welfare.

ANIMAL RIGHTS VIOLATION IN LAHORE ZOO:

t’s no hidden secret that Animal Suffering in Pakistan is real, whether it’s the culling of street
animals or the horrific conditions of Zoo Animals or even the sexual assaults or mere cruelty of
hurting them intentionally or unintentionally. The Zoos in Pakistan have been losing their
animals due to the horrible living conditions and negligence. In the month of January 2019, the
Islamabad Zoo lost four nilgais in a week due to the cold weather as no huts were constructed to
keep the animals warm at night. The Elephant Suzi died in the Lahore Zoo due to loneliness.
Other animals such as giraffe, lions and several other birds have lost their lives. Each animal has
an average life expectancy, and when one dies short of it, it should raise eyebrows and when a
number of them are dying way sooner than they should, it simply means that the Zoos are not up
to the mark.
"The animals in Pakistan’s Zoos are not kept as per the International standards set by the
European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) and the World Association of Zoos and
Aquarium (WAZA). Their cages are not designed as prescribed; the feed being fed is not
nutritious and the medical facilities are also not up to the mark"
