    THE BUILDING SERVED AS A CENTRAL TREASURY.IN THE 20TH CENTURY IT
    BECAME THE CENTRAL BANK BUILDING AND CEMENT VAULT WAS BUILT IN THE
    ATRIUM. THE BUILDING WAS DAMAGE BY WAR BUT IT WAS REPAIRED AND
    REMAINED .

    TODAY,ADUANA IS A STREET, IT IS SORIANO AVENUE IN INSTRAMUROS BUT I’TS


    NOT ATTRACTION .ADUANA ACTUALLY IS A COLONIAL BUILDING KNOWN AS
    INTENDENCIA WHICH IS ONE OF THE LIST OF CULTURAL PROPERTIES OF THE
    PHILIPPINES ADUANA OR CUSTOM PROPERTIES OF THE PHILIPPINES. RESTORATION
    EFFORT IS NECESSARY TO PRESERVE THE HERITAGE ADUANA BUT SAD TO SAY
    INFORMAL SETTLERS DOMINATED IN THE AREA OF ADUANA ALONG ADUANA AND
    MURULLA STREET AND ANYWHERE ELESE WITHIN INTRAMUROS. SCARRY ,IT FEELS
    VERY UNSAFE IN THE AREA ,SQUATTERS ARE TOTAL TURN OFF TO TOURIST.

    SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO REACTED AND THEIR EXPERIENCES ABOUT THE
    SURROUNDINGS TODAY OF ADUANA.:

    “ IT’S JUST A ROAD,PERFECTLY FINE BECAUSE IT WAS EASILY TO LOCATE.YOU


    WILL SEE
    A TAXI OR KALESA PARKING IN HERE. IF YOU ARE LOOKING A TAXI THIS IS THE
    PLACE
    WHERE YOU CAN GO BECAUSE MOST OF THE TRANSPORTATION IS IN HERE.”

    “JUST AN OLD RUIN”


    “NO DOUBT THIS HISTORIC BUILDING COULD HAVE A SIGNIFICANT HISTORICAL VALUE
    BUT FOR TOURISTS WHO DO NOT HAVE ANY INFORMATION ABOUT THIS, IT MAY SEEM LIKE AN
    ORDINARY BUILDING IN DECAY. LOCATED WITHIN INTRAMUROS ALONG THE MAIN ADUANA
    STREET JUST FEW STEPS FROM THE CATHEDRAL AND PASIG RIVER. AN ABANDONED NEGLECT
    BUILDINGWHICH IT COULD BE EVALUATED AND BECOME A TOURIST DESTINATION..”

    PART 4: CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE


    CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

    LOOKING AT THE BUILDING NOW ,ONE MIGHT TEMPT TO SAY THAT WORLD
    WAR II BROUGHT ITS DESTRUCTION .WHILE IT DID SUFFER FROM ARTILLERY AND
    BOMBINGS DURING THE WAR ,WORLD WAR II DID NOT BRING ABOUT IT’S DEMISE . IN
    FACT ,THE BUILDING WAS RESTORED AFTER WAR SERVED AS OFFICE OF THE CENTRAL
    BANK THEN THE TREASURY AND COMMISSION OF ELECTIONS. A FIRE IN 1979 PUT AN
    END TO THE FUNCTIONS THE BUILDING HAS SERVED AND WAS EVENTUALLY
    ABANDONED.

    BUT ALL IS NOT LOST AS PLANS ARE UNDERWAY FOR THE RESTORATION OF THE
    ADUANA /INTENDENCIA TO BE USED AS THE FUTURE HOME OF THE NATIONAL
    ACHIVES. AS OF THIS WRITING THOUGH NOT MUCH ACTIVITY IS BEING DONE FOR
    RESTORATION DUE TO, UNDERSTANDABLY ,CURRENT PROBLEMS WITH FUNDING . A
    PROBLEM THAT IS FACING MANY OUR HERITAGE STRUCTURES IN THE STRUGGLE FOR
    PRESERVATION AND RESTORATION.

    WHY DO WE NEED TO PRESERVED OR RESTORE THE OLD HERITAGE TODAY?


    CONCLUSION:
    WE THEREFORE CONCLUDE THE ADUANA IS PART OF THE OLD HERITAGE OF
    OUR COUNTRY . IT DESIGNATED THE STRUCTURE FOR THE PAST EXPERIENCE OR IT’S
    PURPOSE TO THEM. IN ARCHITECTURAL REASONS IT IS APPRECIATED AS AN ART OF
    DESIGN FOR THE PAST YEARS. HISTORIC BUILDINGS ARE PHYSICAL LINKS TO OUR PAST
    IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT SAVING THE SURVIVAL MATERIALS BUT WE PRESERVED THE
    LAYERS OF INFORMATION ABOUT THE LIVES AND THOSE OF OUR ANCESTOR . WITHOUT
    THAT WE ERASE THE STORIES OF OUR PAST AS IF THE PEOPLE WHO CAME BEFORE US.
