HISTORY OF JAIPUR
IT WAS FOUNDED IN AD 1727 BY SAWAI JAISINGH II IN THE HEART OF RAJASTHAN THE LAND OF WARRIORS. SAWAI JAI SINGH II, A GREAT KACHHAWAHA RULER OF SUPREME GENIUS. HIS MILITARY PROWESS AS WELL AS HIS PENCHANT FOR ART AND ASTRONOMY PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN HIS REIGN, THE REMAINS OF WHICH CAN STILL BE WITNESSED IN THE EXHILARATING CITY OF JAIPUR TODAY. WITH A VIEW TO FIND A NEW CAPITAL IN PLACE OF THE EXISTING ONE AT THE CRAMPED HILLY AREA OF AMBER, JAI SINGH DREW UP PLANS FOR THE NEW CITY OF JAIPUR, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE ANCIENT HINDU TREATISE ON ARCHITECTURE VASTU SASHTRA OR SHILPA SHASTRA IN 1727 AD. HE WAS AIDED BY THE FAMOUS BENGALI ARCHITECT VIDYADHAR CHAKRAVATI IN HIS ENDEAVOR.

POPULARLY KNOWN AS THE PINK CITY, JAIPUR, THE CAPITAL OF RAJASTHAN IS A PLACE OF VIVID CONTRASTS, BOMBARDING THE SENSES AT EVERY TURN. IT IS A PLACE WHERE CYCLE RICKSHAWS MOVE ALONGSIDE POSH AUTOMOBILES, WHERE PALATIAL HOTELS SHARE GROUND WITH SLUMS, AND LIFE CONTINUOUSLY MOVES ON. THE PINK COLOR WAS USED AT THE TIME OF CONSTRUCTING THE PLACE TO CREATE AN IMPRESSION OF RED SANDSTONE BUILDINGS OF MUGHAL CITIES. THE WHOLE TOWN WAS HOWEVER REPAINTED IN 1876, DURING THE VISIT OF THE PRINCE OF WALES, LATER EDWARD VII.

TOWN PLAN OF JAIPUR

JAIPUR WAS PLANNED IN A GRID SYSTEM WITH WIDE STRAIGHT AVENUES, ROADS, STREETS AND LANES AND UNIFORM ROWS OF SHOPS ON EITHER SIDE OF THE MAIN ROADS, ALL ARRANGED IN NINE RECTANGULAR CITY SECTORS (CHOKDIS), REPRESENTING THE ANCIENT HINDU MAP OF THE UNIVERSE. THE CITY WAS SURROUNDED BY A CRENELLATED MASONRY WALL, MEASURING 20 FEET IN HEIGHT AND 9 FEET IN THICKNESS WITH SEVEN IMPOSING GATEWAYS DHRUVAPOL (ZORAWAR SINGH GATE) ON THE NORTH, GANGAPOL AND SURAJPOL ON THE EAST, RAMPOL (GHAT GATE), SHIVPOL (SANGANERI GATE) AND KISHANPOL (AJMERI GATE) ON THE SOUTH, AND CHANDPOL ON THE WEST. THE WALLS WERE BUILT FOR PROTECTION FROM INVADING ARMIES AND WILD ANIMALS THAT LURKED JUST OUTSIDE IN THE JUNGLES THAT SURROUNDED THE CITY. BUT JAI SINGH'S PLANNED CITY HAS WITHSTOOD ALL THE PRESSURES AND THE CHANGES.

BUILT BY MAHARAJA JAI SINGH II IN THE EARLY 18TH

CENTURY, THE CITY PALACE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT LANDMARK OF JAIPUR WHICH COVERS ALMOST ONESEVENTH OF THE OLD CITY AREA DIVIDED INTO A SERIES OF COURTYARDS, GARDENS AND BUILDINGS AND NUMEROUS ADDITIONS THAT WERE MADE BY JAI SINGH'S SUCCESSORS.
THIS IS A WONDERFUL BLEND OF RAJASTHAN AND

MUGHAL ARCHITECTURE, A MAJOR TOURIST ATTARACTION. THE CENTER OF THIS PALACE IS THE SEVEN STORIES CHAND MAHAL OR THE MOON PALACE SOME OF THE BEAUTIFUL BUILDINGS IN THE CITY PALACE COMPLEX INCLUDE MUBARAK MAHAL, GOVIND DEVJI TEMPLE, CHANDRA MAHAL, DIWAN-I-KHAS, DIWAN-I-AAM, PRITAM NIWAS AND SAWAI MAN SINGH II MUSEUM. THE MUSEUM HOUSES AN EXTENSIVE COLLECTION OF RARE MANUSCRIPTS ALONG WITH TWO SILVER URNS THAT ARE THE LARGEST SILVER OBJECTS IN THE WORLD AS MENTIONED IN THE GEINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS. ONE OF THEM BEING 6''-6' TALL,4' WIDE AND 250KG WEIGHTS AND THE OTHER ONE BEING 5 HIGH WAS MADE BY MAHARAJA MADHO SINGH II TO CARRY THE SACRED GANGAS WATER WITH HIM ON HIS TRIP TO ENGLAND. THERE ARE TWO MAIN ENTRANCES TO THE PALACE - ONE IS FROM JALEB CHOWK AND ANOTHER FROM TRIPOLIA GATE SIDE. THE TRIPOLIA GATE FACING THE CHAURA RASTA IS RESERVED EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE ROYAL FAMILY AND THEIR GUESTS.

THE HUGE AND FASCINATING DOUBLE STORIED STRUCTURE OF MUBARAK MAHAL

BUILT IN THE 19TH CENTURY IS SEEN AS ONE ENTERS THROUGH THE ORNATE GATEWAY CALLED AS VIRENDRA POL.
THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS STRUCTURE WAS COMPLETED IN 1899 DURING THE

REIGN OF SAWAI MADHO SINGH II UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF COLONEL JACOB, WHO WAS THE ARCHITECT OF THIS BUILDING.
THERE IS AN AMOROUS BLEND OF MUGHAL AND EUROPEAN ARCHITECTURE. THE DESIGN OF THE BUILDING FOLLOWS THE SAME PATTERN AS THAT OF THE

CITY AND IS DIVIDED INTO

A 9 X 3 SQUARE GRID. THE STRUCTURE NOW FORMS THE PART OF THE SAWAI MANSINGH II MUSEUM AND HOUSES THE TEXTILE SECTION OF THE MUSEUM.

THOUGH EARLIER USED AS A PLACE

WHERE THE CLASSICAL SINGERS AND KATHAK DANCERS REFINED THEIR SKILLS IT NOW HOUSES A LARGE SECTION OF ANTIQUE WEAPONS OF THE 15TH CENTURY USED BY THE JAIPUR RULERS AND THEIR ARMIES INCLUDING THE ORIGINAL SWORD OF MAHARAJA SAWAI MAN SINGH, WEIGHING MORE THAN 10 KGS
IT ALSO HOUSES THE SWORD INCRUSTED

WITH PRECIOUS STONES LIKE EMERALDS AND RUBIES GIFTED BY QUEEN VICTORIA TO SAWAI RAM SINGH (1835-80).

BUILT IN 1799, THE HAWA MAHAL(THE

PALACE OF THE WINDS) WAS BUILT BY THE POET-KING SAWAI PRATAP SINGH. IT IS A STUNNING EXAMPLE OF RAJPUT ARTISTRY, WITH ITS PINK SEMI OCTAGONAL AND DELICATELY HONEYCOMBED SANDSTONE WINDOWS(JALI) WHICH ENABLED THE LADIES OF THE ROYAL HOUSEHOLD TO WATCH THE EVERYDAY LIFE AND PROCESSIONS OF THE CITY WHILE MAINTAINING THEIR PURDAH. . IT LOOKS FROM THE SIREH DEORHI BAZAR AS A MULTINICHED FIVE STORY HIGH VIEW OF THE COMPLEX COMPRISING OF 953 NICHES AND 152 WINDOWS . HAWA MAHAL DERIVES ITS NAME FROM THE FACT THAT IN SPITE OF BEING SUCH AN IMPOSING STRUCTURE, IT IS DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT THE PASSAGE OF WIND IS NOT OBSTRUCTED ALLOWING IT TO PASS FREELY THROUGH THE NUMEROUS JHAROKHAS (WINDOWS) OF THE ROYAL LADIES QUARTERS, KEEPING THEM COOL IT IS SAID THAT HAWA MAHAL'S DESIGN RESEMBLES THE CROWN OF LORD KRISHNA. THE PALACE ALSO HOUSES A MUSEUM NEAR THE ENTRANCE. THE ENTRANCE TO THE PALACE IS FROM THE REAR SIDE.

JANTAR MANTAR IS ONE OF THE SAWAI JAI SINGH'S FIVE REMARKABLE

OBSERVATORIES CONSTRUCTED WITH STONE AND MARBLE IN 1728, ITS COMPLEX INSTRUMENTS REPRESENT THE HIGH-POINTS OF MEDIEVAL INDIAN ASTRONOMY.
THE TWO RAM YANTRAS USED FOR GAUGING ALTITUDES ARE UNIQUE IN THEIR

ISOLATION.
THIS IS THE LARGEST AND THE ONLY

WORKING OF FIVE OBSERVATORIES FOUNDED BY SAWAI JAI SINGH-II IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE COUNTRY.
IN ALL THERE ARE 17 INSTRUMENTS

IN THE JANTAR MANTAR COMPLEX.

THE FUNCTION OF EACH INSTRUMENT IS RATHER COMPLEX BUT SERVES A PARTICULAR FUNCTION WHERE TIME PLAYS THE MAIN THEME. THEY ALSO GIVE PRECISE READINGS OF THE ASTRONOMICAL OCCURRING.
THE LARGE KRANTIVRITTA YANTRA WAS EMPLOYED FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF

THE LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE OF THE CELESTIAL BODIES DURING THE DAY AS WELL AS NIGHT.

THE SMALL SAMRAT YANTRA IS A TRIANGULAR STRUCTURE AND HAS A LARGE SUNDIAL

WITH QUADRANTS AT THE BORDERS GIVEN IN HOURS AND MINUTES.

THE DIGANSHA YANTRA WAS DEVISED TO MEASURE THE AZIMUTH (ARC OF THE

CELESTIAL GREAT CIRCLE FROM ZENITH TO HORIZON) OF PLANETARY BODIES.

SIMILARLY, THE SMALL RAM YANTRA AND THE LARGE RAM YANTRA ARE USED TO FIND

THE ALTITUDE AND THE AZIMUTH.

THE CHAKRA YANTRA GIVES THE ANGULAR MEASUREMENT OF AN OBJECT FROM THE

EQUATOR.
THE JAI PRAKASH YANTRA DETERMINES THE PRECISE COORDINATES OF CELESTIAL

BODIES AND THE SMALL IRON PLATE STRUNG BETWEEN THE CROSS WIRES GIVES THE SUN'S LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE AND THE ZODIACAL SIGN THAT IT IS PASSING THROUGH. ITS MAIN FUNCTION IS TO KEEP AN EYE ON ALL THE OTHER INSTRUMENTS.
THE RASIVALAYAS YANTRA OPERATES IN THE SAME MANNER AS THAT OF THE SAMRAT

YANTRA AND HAS ONE SUNDIAL FOR EACH OF THE ZODIAC SIGNS.
THE DISHA YANTRA HAS ONLY ONE FUNCTION AND THAT IS TO POINT TOWARDS THE

NORTH. THE UNNATHANSHA YANTRA IS USED TO FIND THE ALTITUDES OF THE ASTRAL BODIES.
THE DHRUVA YANTRA HELPS IN FINDING THE POSITION OF THE POLE STAR AT NIGHT

AND ALSO THOSE OF THE 12 ZODIAC SIGNS.

THE RAJ YANTRA OR THE KING OF INSTRUMENTS IS USED ONLY ONCE A YEAR TO

CALCULATE THE HINDU CALENDAR, THE DETAILS OF WHICH ARE BASED ON THE JAIPUR STANDARD.
