PowerPoint Presentation on the Repressive Hypothesis by Michel Foucault On 10th May 2019, a PowerPoint
Presentation was conducted on Michel Foucault's Repressive Hypothesis by Dhruvee Sinha, a student of the IInd
Semester (2018-2020). Dr Shanker Dutt, the Head of the Department, presided over this session. Repressive
Hypothesis is the second of a four-volume study of sexuality The History of Sexuality in by the French historian
and philosopher Michel Foucault, in which the author examines the emergence of "sexuality" as a discursive
object and separate sphere of life and argues that the notion that every individual has a sexuality is a relatively
recent development in Western societies. The presentation showed how Foucault suggests the repressive
hypothesis is essentially an attempt to give revolutionary importance to discourse on sexuality. The repressive
hypothesis makes it seem both defiant and of utmost importance to our personal liberation that we talk openly
about sex. It was affirmed through the presentation that our discourse on sexuality, in its promise for a better,
freer way of life, is a form of preaching. The presentation ended with an interactive round of queries and
explanations between Dr Dutt and the students.

of Dr Muniba Sami. The presentation began with the definition of existentialism- a belief that through a
combination of awareness, free will, and personal responsibility, one can construct their own meaning within a
world that intrinsically has none of its own. Followed by the elaboration on the existential crisis, a much used
term now. The presentation gained momentum to deal with several concepts of existentialism along with
various existantial thinkers such as Kierkeggard, who writes "nothing ... gives birth to anxiety”- in anxiety we do
not fear something in particular but we experience the terror of a vacuum in which is existence is thrown. The
presentation also dealth with novelists such as Franz Kafka and the roots of existentialism found in his novels. It
was concluded with the view that humans define their own meaning in life, and try to make rational decisions
despite existing in an irrational universe and Sartre's belief that with total freedom comes total responsibility.
