Industrial Analysis
The Philippine Coffee Board Inc. (PCBI) recently announced the rising consumption in
coffee of Filipinos- in all forms be it roast and ground, instant or specialty. “We are now
at 170,000 MT per year, says Guillermo “Bill” Luz, Founding trustee of the country’s
premiere coffee organization. “When we founded the board in 2002, our production was
at a low of 22,000 MT and consumption then was 75,000MT,” he continues.
This brings the industry to a challenge of importation from Vietnam and Indonesia,
ASEAN neighbors who are 2nd and 4thin production globally. “The Indonesians are
offering commercial and specialty coffee to our roasters,” says Nicholas Matti, Chair of
the PCBI. Matti was at the Indonesian—Philippines coffee tasting event held recently by
the Indonesian Embassy with the support of PCBI. Matti also gathered the biggest
roasters in the country—Gourmets café, Kickstart coffee, UCC, Siete Baracos, and
Culinary Exchange—to consolidate their efforts to keep coffee prices stable in
supermarkets and groceries.
IV. Competition
Starbucks Coffee
Began in 1971. Back then we were a roaster and retailer of whole bean and ground
coffee, tea and spices with a single store in Seattle’s Pike Place Market.
Today, we are privileged to connect with millions of customers every day with
exceptional products and more than 24,000 retail stores in 70 countries.
Starbucks is named after the first mate in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Our logo is also
inspired by the sea – featuring a twin-tailed siren from Greek mythology.
Our Coffee We’ve always believed in serving the best coffee possible. It's our goal for
all of our coffee to be grown under the highest standards of quality, using ethical
sourcing practices. Our coffee buyers personally travel to coffee farms in Latin America,
Africa and Asia to select high quality beans. And our master roasters bring out the
balance and rich flavor of the beans through the signature Starbucks Roast.
Bo’s Coffee
The idea of starting a coffee shop came to Bo's Coffee founder Steve Benitez when,
back when he was a student in Ateneo de Manila University, he always had to drink
coffee to stay awake to study. After attending various seminars and training, he decided
to open Bo's Coffee in a small space in Ayala Center Cebu in June 1996. At first,
Benitez had to give away free samples as the Cebuano market was not yet familiar of
his concept. The business did not produce any profit and was on the negative for its first
three months. However, after eight months, the business started making a profit,
enabling Benitez to put up another coffee cart in SM City Cebu. The coffee shop has
grown considerably since then, growing into its current 91 branches throughout the
country, located mainly in the country's key cities.
Is the ideal place for artistic people or those who want to relax in an
inspiring space. This bohemian-inspired joint is part restaurant and part creative outlet.
Dreamland serves hot and cold drinks, including barakong Batangueño
and tsokolateng Batangueña. For food, they have appetizers, rice meals, and pasta.
Unlike most coffee shops, Dreamland does not have Wi-Fi to encourage guests to talk
to each other, read a book, play the guitar, write a poem, or do other online detox
activities. Dreamland Café has branches in Lipa City and Tagaytay City.
Another popular foreign coffee chain shop in the Philippines is Coffee Bean
and Tea Leaf (CBTL). Also known as The Bean, the brand was created in California in
1963 by Herbert B. Hyman. The house specialty at Coffee Bean is their Original Ice
Blended Coffee drinks, touted as the world’s first cold blended coffee drink which uses
smooth processed ice. Today, they use the same technique in their tea and fruit
smoothies. CBTL also carries espresso, coffee, latte, non-coffee drinks, and coffee-free
products. For food, they have breakfast meals, sandwiches, pasta, salads, and
pastries to go with their drinks.
