1. PURPOSE
To establish standard colors and color groupings to promote rapid recognition of chemical
contents of equipment and piping and thus reduce exposure to hazards. This standard
intentionally differs from the Corporate Engineering Standards (10-245-05 - 10-245-65) in
the following areas:
1. Aluminum (silver) is substituted for Orange as a color code for steam and hot
condensate, as high-temperature paints are not available in orange.
2. Specific colors are designated for a specific service. (See attached chart)
2. SCOPE
Pipelines, vessels, equipment and apparatus will have all exposed, non-insulated surfaces
painted in accordance with the prescribed color code. (See attached chart)
Lines which are galvanized or not carbon steel are candidates for color bands in lieu of
complete painting. Bands two feet in length will be used on each side of a change in
direction, on each side of a wall penetration and at reasonable intervals on straight runs.
Labels may not be used in lieu of color bands. Lines which are color banded may not be
painted a background color.
All new construction shall comply with this standard upon completion of construction. All
existing pipelines, vessels, equipment, and apparatus will be brought into compliance.
3. PROCEDURE
The following table contains specific color requirements for various services within the
Wyandotte Site and is an expansion on the Corporate Safety and Health Standard "Safety
Color Codes". The list provides specific standard colors for chemicals common throughout
the site and, in addition, provides color grouping for similar hazardous and non-hazardous
materials for use within specific plants. While the colors within a color grouping are not
specific to a particular material across the site, they are specific to a particular service within
a given plant. For hazardous-color-coded lines and equipment, items coded with the same
specific color may vary in the chemicals handled from plant to plant, but the degree of
hazard will be approximately the same in all services.
BASF Corporation Title: Safety Color Code
Colors have been selected based on ability to be distinguished after fading, ability to be
distinguished in poor light, durability, availability, and cost. All colors are specific standard
colors, not custom blends or mixes.
The specific Carboline color numbers may become non-standard with Carboline over the life
of this standard. However, the specific numbers shown in this standard will always relate to
identifiable specific colors. Confirmation of substitute Carboline colors or use of paints and
colors from sources other than Carboline, must be approved by a Wyandotte Site
Engineering Associate.
Insulated piping shall be color-coded if coated with any material other than primer prior to
being insulated.
Uninsulated carbon steel tanks and vessels shall be painted white with a 3-ft. to 6-ft. color-
code band at the bottom (vertical tanks) or around the middle (horizontal tanks). Insulated
tanks shall have exposed nozzles and manways color-coded.
Pipeline, vessels, equipment, and apparatus containing materials not listed herein shall not
be painted until a color is assigned for that material by Manufacturing Services (Safety).
When such additions are made to the color code list, this standard shall be revised and
reissued.
SAFETY RED: Carboline #J596 Red shall be the basic color for identification of all fire-
protection equipment. The following types of equipment shall be included in this category:
Fire Hydrants and post indicator valves are painted in accordance with City of Wyandotte
Fire Department requirements for consistency within the city.
Carboline #J596 Red shall also be the basic color for identification of physical hazards and
shall apply as follows:
BASF Corporation Title: Safety Color Code
1. All safety cans, or other portable containers of flammable liquids having a flash point at
or below 100 deg. F. shall be painted red. A yellow band may be painted around the can.
SAFETY ORANGE: Carboline #J498 shall be used as the basic color for designating
dangerous parts of machinery or energized equipment which may cut, crush, shock, or
otherwise injure employees.
SILVER (ALUMINUM): Silver or aluminum color shall be the basic color for identifying steam
valves, lines, or hot condensate. In addition, all steam valves will be further identified by a
plastic or metal tag attached to the valve.
SAFETY YELLOW: Carboline #J698 Yellow shall be the basic color for designating caution
and for working physical hazards such as striking against, stumbling, falling, tripping, and
"caught between". Solid Yellow, Yellow and Black Stripes, and/or Yellow and Black
Checkers may be used in a combination which will attract the most attention in a particular
environment.
SAFETY GREEN: Carboline #L383 Green shall be used as the basic color for designating
"safety" and the location of first-aid equipment.
WHITE: White shall be the basic color for identifying nitrogen valves or lines at utility stations
or at any location where nitrogen is utilized through hose connections. In addition, all
nitrogen cconnection points will be further identified by a metal or plastic tag attached at the
connection point.
Black, White, or a combination of Black and White shall be used as the basic colors for
designation of traffic and housekeeping markings. Some applications are:
SAFETY PURPLE: Carboline #J597 Purple shall be the basic color for designating radiation
hazards. Radiation refers to radiation types such as x-ray, alpha, beta, gamma, neutron,
proton, deuteron, and meson.
SAFETY BLUE: Carboline #A183 Blue shall be the basic color for identifying air valves or
lines at utility stations.
