Food being basic necessity of man ranges from simple to lavish ones. As era passes the
demand of the man (consumer) changes. He demanded food with acceptable
presentation in terms of color, texture, taste and obviously the package of food. Packages
are necessary for the product to retain maximum stability in the shelves. Food package
also serves as the barrier to harsh environmental conditions. These all conditions lead
to the emerge of new food industry known as food packaging industry. Firstly, the industry
was the need now it is the demand of consumer. Food with attractive packages are sold
instantly .
Anyhow ,food in package is consumed and the final fate of package is not determined by
its manufacturer and the consumer did not care about it. Most of consumer did not try to
bin it they only throw it anywhere.
These packages are made of polyethene which are not degradable even after decades
causing lot of pollution everywhere i.e. in oceans causing trouble to marine life ,in lands
and even in air if someone try to incinerate them causing evolution of chemicals in air .
This is main environmental concern today in most of developing as well as in developed
world . The only solution to this problem is degradable packaging, in my opinion that may
solve the issue of pollution and manage waste to some extent . In the case of food
package we do not take risk that we cannot use any type of degradable material because
we don’t want to introduce any kind of contamination as well as try best to maintain all the
sensory characters of food. In this regard only some researchers do researches to find
best possible degradable material . Anyhow, research data is limited but in my opinion
biodegradable materials are best .

Pakistan’s food industry is one of the world’s Largest market in terms of production.
The main problem of the industry today is to manage waste and to reduce plastic
pollution which is in the form of polythene packaging. Researchers in the UNIVERSITY
OF BURNEL LONDON developed biodegradable packaging. That may help to tackle
with both issues.
Bio peel is dehydrated orange peel made with biopolymers such as vegetable glycerin
,corn starch, potato starch and water. After mixing it is hardened by the process of drying
,baking, and molding.
Reason for choosing orange peel
The idea came into process in order to utilize the masses of waste produced from orange
juice manufacturing industry. Firstly idea was to convert all the waste produced after
extracting one liter of juice into the carton but the material steadily degraded itself in water
and product was at high risk of damage during transportation
The mixing of vegetable glycerin with citrus waste gives it tensile strength and drastically
increasing the compressibility of material. After mixing the final product look like pie crust.
It’s intended use is in farmers market take away rather than grocery Market.
The beauty of bio peel is that it utilizes two waste products that is citrus waste and
vegetable glycerin from biodiesel production. This provide single use packaging and can
give the energy used to make packaging back to environment after degradation. Other
methods for giving energy back to environment by composting or through using it for
animal feed.
It gives energy back to environment as it is degradable.
Unfortunately it is heavier than plastic and may be visually not appealing to consumer.
However innovation needs further development to make it commercially feasible and also
act as remainder that solution to food industry problems can be found everywhere -even
in waste .
