Question one: Filling in the gaps with the appropriate words. (06pts)

1.In order to mark stress, we should take into consideration whether the word
is simple or complex, the category of the word, the number of syllables and the
phonological structure of the syllable (1pt 0.25 for each)
2. Most compound words are stressed on the second element except nouns ( noun+noun/
Gerund+noun) (1pt 0.5 for each)
3. Prominence is realized by pitch of the voice and energy of articulation
(loudness) and sometimes by quality (strong vowel)and quantity vowel length.
(1pt 0.25 for each)
4. The antepenultimate syllable means the 3rd syllable from the end as in the word
verify, organize/ Or the third syllable from the end (1pt 0.5 for each)

5. Most verbs ending in ‘ish’are stressed on the penultimate syllable which


means the 2nd syllable from the end as in the words: publish, establish.(1pt 0.5 for each)

6. The orthography of the transcribed word /ˈstændəd/ is standard. (1pt)

Question two: Correcting the sentences. (06pts) 1.5 for each)

1.The word undoubtedly is stressed on the last syllable ‘ly’/ʌnˈdaʊtɪdli/


The word undoubtedly is stressed on the second syllable because it is a complex
word composed of a stress-neutral prefix –un and suffixes -ed, -ly’, so the
stress falls on the simple word doubt ( which is the stem)
2. The following words are stressed on the penultimate syllable:
activate,analyze
The words activate and analyze are stressed on the antepenultimate syllable
that is the 3rd syllable from the end

3. The transcription of the word Japanese is not/ˈjæpæniz/but it is/ˌdʒæpəˈniːz/.


4.English words ending in suffixes –ee, -eer, -ese, -ette, -ique carry the
primary stress on the penultimate syllable.

English words ending in suffixes –ee, -eer, -ese, -ette, -ique carry the
primary stress on the ultimate syllable (final).
