Case study- Moss and McAdams Accounting Firm

1. If you were Palmer at the end of the case, how would you respond?
If I were in Palmer’s position, I would be bothered to know that one
of my valuable team members would be joining another team. I would justify
the necessity of Olds again regarding keeping him in Johnsonville project as he
has expertise in financial information system. Knowing that Olds is completely
stressed out and finding it hard to manage between two projects I would suggest
him to choose the one he wishes to work on be successful in what he does which
would be best for the firm and project.

2. What, if anything, could Palmer have done to avoid losing Olds?

He should have spoken to Crossby and Sands before things got out of
hand. He was to work for Palmer from 1pm-5pm. Palmer should not have
compromised too much on priorities set for Johnsonville. As planned
accordingly, Olds should have been followed strictly. As Olds was one of the
skilled and demanding employee Palmer should have built a close relationship
by appreciation and rewarding more.

3. What advantages and disadvantages of a matrix type organization are

apparent from this case?
The advantage of matrix system is Efficient utilization of resources,
where many people can work on multiple projects at the same time. They work
together by giving different viewpoints on how to handle situations and helps
to keep the team focused on project goal.
The disadvantage is the conflict of loyalty. This is the main disadvantage
in this case because conflicts between managers in sharing resources, work
could be delayed and focuses maybe changed time to time. Also, stress,
inefficiency where some projects may get bogged down and Work-life
imbalance.

4. What could the management at M&M do to more effectively manage

situations like this?
The management at M&M could handle the situations effectively by
appointing more professional who have skill sets like Olds. Apply effective time
split between multiple projects. Thus, it is important to set an open culture of
communication between employees and management. Offer competitive
benefits or financial rewards to the employees.
