Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes on other hand is a multifactorial metabolic disease. Type 2 diabetes used

to be known as adult-onset diabetes and accounts for around 90% of all diabetes cases, but today

more children are being diagnosed with the disorder, probably due to the rise in childhood

obesity. Obesity, elevated levels of lipids and insulin in the blood, and insulin resistance all

accompany the elevated blood glucose that defines diabetes. (The Scientist Magazine, 2016)

With type 2 diabetes, your body either resists the effects of insulin or doesn't produce

enough insulin to maintain normal glucose levels. It is associated with modifiable lifestyle risk

factors, also has strong genetic and family related risk factors.

There's no cure for type 2 diabetes, but losing weight, eating well and exercising can help

manage the disease. If diet and exercise aren't enough to manage your blood sugar well, you may

also need diabetes medications such as oral drugs and/or insulin therapy to keep their blood

glucose levels under control.

Causes of Type 2 Diabetes

Diabetes is a hereditary that runs in the family, meaning that they are passed down from

the parents' genes or family member with diabetes, you may have a genetic disposition to the

condition, which is the primary cause of acquiring diabetes.

The second cause of type 2 diabetes, occurs when the body doesn't produce enough

insulin to function properly, or the body's cells are resistant to insulin. This means glucose stays

in the blood and isn't used as fuel for energy.

While people may have a strong genetic disposition towards type 2 diabetes, the risk is

greatly increased if people display a number of modifiable lifestyle factors including high blood

pressure, overweight or obesity, insufficient physical activity, poor diet and the classic ‘apple

shape’ body where extra weight is carried around the waist.

According to Diabetes Australia Organization, People are at a higher risk of getting type

2 diabetes in the family, which have a family history of diabetes. Adults are prone to risk that

ages over 55 years of age. In middle age, range at 45 years of age can acquire also type 2

diabetes either because of overweight or having hypertension. In some cases type 2 diabetes is

interrelated to the people who have gestational diabetes when pregnant. These includes also, a

woman who has given birth to a child over 4.5 kgs (9 lbs).
