Animal Sculpture

(Adapted from Thesis by Jennifer Beth Silvers)

“We are going to be making art that helps us to practice being creative.”

Materials Needed:
● Any sculpture materials, but limit to only a few choices to avoid overwhelm (ideas are
beads, pipe cleaners, puff balls, or fabric)

Instructions:
1. Have the individual think of their favorite animal.
2. Have the individual create the animal from the materials provided.
3. The individual may need help to hot glue or secure the items together.

Thinking questions
1. Does this animal have arms or legs? If so, how many of each?
2. What color is this animal?
3. What size is this animal?

● Encourages fine and gross motor skills.
● Enhances hand eye coordination.
Handprint Ceramic Paintings

“We are going to be practicing expressing ourselves through art.”

Materials Needed:
● Materials to make clay or store ● Paint brushes
bought clay ● Other detail crafts (feathers, beads,
● Rolling pin ect.)
● Paint

Instructions:
1. Have individual make clay if desired.
2. Have individual play and experiment with the texture of the clay.
3. After a while have the individual roll the clay into a flat sheet and cut out a square big
enough for a single handprint.
4. Have the individual create an impression of their handprint in the square.
5. Allow clay to dry.
6. Once completely dry have the individual paint their hand print.
7. Allow to dry.
8. Have the individual decorate further if desired.

Thinking questions
1. Is there a reason you decorated your handprint that way?
2. Can you describe how kneading the clay felt to you?

● Enhances fine and gross motor skills.
● Promotes hand eye coordination.
● Practice with conceptualization.
● Expression of self.
● Kneading clay has a calming effect.
