Preface

To the Teachers,
The story, “Mindok an Hambog nga Manok”, teaches the value of humility in a manner fit for young
children. It is a story suggested in the Teacher’s Guide in Mother Tongue for Grade 1, Quarter 2, Week 9 primarily
as a springboard to introduce letter Mm. Generally, the story would aid in the development of the different
learning domains such as book and print knowledge, phonics and word recognition, vocabulary development,
attitude towards reading, oral language and listening/reading comprehension.
As the facilitator of learning, you have all the opportunities to use the story not only for learning areas such
as Mother Tongue and Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao but in any way that would broaden the learners’ view of their
world and thus learn a deeper meaning of life.

Mindok, the Boastful Chicken
by Gretel Laura M. Cadiong

1. Mang Manolo had a wide poultry.

2. There were roosters, hens and chicks.
3. But Mang Manolo’s favorite was Mindok.
4. Mindok was the most robust, red and most poised rooster.
5. “Tik-ti-laok! I am the best chicken,” said Mindok.
6. He fought with other roosters.
7. He chased the small chicks.
8. He snatched the hens’ food.
9. “Nobody can beat me for I am the best,” boasted Mindok.
10. One day, Mang Manolo brought Mindok to a cockpit.
11. In the cockpit, he saw many chickens. They were robust and poised chickens.
12. Mindok was made to fight with another red and robust chicken.
13. Mindok lost the fight. He had a big wound on his body.
14. When Mindok got home, the roosters helped him nurse his wound.
15. The hens fed him.
16. The chicks watched over him.
17. Mindok was so embarrassed.
18. “I am sorry my friends. I have nothing to boast after all,” said Mindok.
