GLOVE BOX DESIGN TECHNIQUE
HACKATHON THEME – 1 : SMART INNOVATIVE GLOVE BOX DESIGN
The task is to conceptualize a smart 4-port glove box, which is used for the
fabrication of Li-ion coin cells at a laboratory scale. Participants are advised to
explore a lab scale glove box for its function and working principles. A glove box
will have a large main chamber and a small ante-chamber. The facility will have
polycarbonate glass windows with chamber maintained at concentration less
than 1ppm O2 and less than 1ppm H2O purity level. Vacuum pumps are used to
evacuate the air inside the chamber via a dehumidifier arrangement (say silica
gel packs). Subsequently, to maintain inert atmosphere, suitable inert gas feed
valves, which is connected to inert gas cylinders are used. The valves are
controlled by solenoids. The chambers will also have a temperature control
mechanism. Temperature, pressure and humidity in the main and ante-chamber
are monitored. The synchronization of valve operation (opening and closing) is
taken care by PLCs.
Take a conventional a 4-port glove box with an overall external dimensions: 2600
mm W x 1050 mm D x 1900 mm H (approx) with an anti-chamber of 380 mm
internal diameter 600 mm internal length (approx) as reference. Consider
including two rows of shelves of 1000 mm in length to place chemicals and glass
wares. Devices such as a bench-top thermal evaporator, digital weighing balance,
and magnetic stirrer should be provided inside the main chamber with suitable
AC plug points. Some visual media like tower-lamp or HMI etc. to indicate
readiness of chamber with prescribed levels of H2O and O2. Evolve innovative
designs of user- friendly smart glove box to improvise the performance and
ergonomics compared to the existing technology. Support your design with
suitable CAD images, animations, block diagrams etc.
HACKATHON THEME – 2 : RECYCLING TECHNIQUES FOR lI-ION BATTERIES
A variety of Lithium-ion batteries consist of Lithium, Carbon, Nickel, Cobalt,
Titanium etc. These materials are less scarcely available, and some are toxic.
Many battery recycling methods are already in use, such as pyrolysis,
hydrothermal recycling, and direct physical recycling, leaching etc. Each method
has its own pros and cons. Explore chemical technique for recycling the lithium-
ion batteries and evolve design which is innovative, safe, user friendly and
ergonomic table-top plant. Conceptualize mechanism for built-in safety measures
and monitoring system, fume/vapour extraction/scrubbing and neutralizing
system to address fire, explosion and health hazards during recycling. Support
your design with suitable CAD images, animations, block diagrams etc.
