II. BACKGROUND/SITUATION ANALYSIS

The importance of Mathematics as a subject in the curriculum has

been highlighted by the education sector and the Department of Education.
Its relevance is evident in the daily lives of people for everything is associated
with numbers.

Early numeracy is salient in the lives of the pupils. They should be

able to master counting and perform the four fundamental operations of
Mathematics even in its simplest form because everything starts with basic.
The learning of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing big numbers
starts with small ones.

It has been recorded that there is an increase in the number of pupils

who diagnosed as non-numerates. The number continues to escalate even in
the higher grade level and secondary level. Based on the assessment, Grade
1 pupils are still having hard time to do the basics of Mathematics in terms of
four fundamental operations.

The importance of possessing a strong foundation on numeracy is

salient in the academic journey of the pupils. When one has hard time in
performing basic competencies in Math, the learning of more complex ones
will be in vain.

The assessment reveals that 51.32% of the pupils are still considered
as non-numerates. This perennial issue is caused by different factors that are
needed to be addressed. Based on the conducted analysis from the interview
and focused group discussion with the teachers and pupils, it is revealed that
these pupils have weak foundation in their four fundamental operations
caused by the heavy books that they need to carry as they go to school.

With this, the proponent decides to come up with a pocket module in

numeracy that will aid the pupils, teachers and parents in teaching these
pupils with basic numeracy skill.
