WRITING SKILL 3 - WRITE A LETTER

A. Making a request:
Dear Sir,
1 I was very surprised at the letter I receive from you this morning.
2. In it you say I have not paid for a/ the book you sent me one month ago.
3. You say I must send you the money immediately.
4. In fact I returned the book to you the same day I received.
5. I did not return it because I did not want it.
6. But because the book was in poor condition with several torn pages.
7. I sent you a letter at that time asking you to send me a perfect copy of the same book.
8. I hope that you will do that and that I will not have to write to you again about this
matter.

B. Reporting an event:
Dear Bill,
1. I expect you will be surprised to get a letter from me.
2. As you can see from the address above. I am in hospital.
3. Last Wednesday I had an accident when I was driving to work.
4. A Child ran out in front of my car and I had to stop so suddenly that the car behind
crashed into me.
5. Luckily I was wearing my seatbelt so I was not injured badly although I will have to
stay here until next Friday.
6. It is very boring and I would be pleased to see it for me if you have any spare time.
7. Visiting hours are 7.00 to 9.00 in the evening.
8. I hope toy will be able to come.

C. Asking an enquiry:
Dear Sir,
1. I saw Institute’s advertisement in Today’s TV program of Vietnam news.
2. I am interested in learning English.
3. I would like some information about your Institute.
4. I want to improve my reading and writing.
5. Could you please the information of the length of the courses fees for beginners?
6. I can complete a complete spoken English test if necessary.
7. I look forward to hearing from you.

D. Telling a story:
1. Tam was a poor farmer’s daughter.
2. After her mother had died, her father got remarried.
3. Her stepmother had a daughter called Cam.
4. Cam’s mother was very cruel and made Tam do the chores all day.
5. A stranger, old woman changed her rags into beautiful clothes.
6. Tam ran to the festival in the village. But on her way home, she lost one of the shoes.
7. The prince found it and decided to marry the girl who owned it.
8. The shoe fitted Tam.
9. The prince fell in love with Tam and got married her.

F. Making a complaint:
Dear Sir,
1. I am writing to you about the noise caused by the karaoke shop near my house.
2. They play music so loudly that I cannot study in the evening or sleep at night.
3. They should lower the volume when it is 9 p.m.
4. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing how you will deal with the problem

2. They produce a lot of smoke. So, we could not breathe.

4. I suggest the local authority should make them to stop their polluting activities.

G. Giving a support:
Dear Sir,
1. I’d you pay your attention, please. 2. Have you ever thought of taking bus to school? 3.
This is a fast and comfortable way to travel everywhere. 4. Besides, it is an effective way
to save energy.5. So, going to school by bus and you will see the difference.
H. Write an instruction: You want your friend to use a cassette place:
- First, push the button to open the cover.
- Then place the cassette inside.
- Next, close the cover.
- Finally, press the PLAY button.
