Stop Dengue!

“Prevention is better than cure”.

A famous saying and a smart advice to those who doesn’t want to be affected
by the widely-known disease and a public health problem of the Philippines
which is endemic to all regions in the country, commonly known as dengue.

Dengue spreads by several species of mosquito of the aedes type (a genus of

mosquito), principally A. aegypti (yellow fever mosquito that can spread
dengue fever, chikungunya and other disease agent). It is transmitted by day
biting Aedes aegyptis and aedes albopictus mosquitos. Symptoms of the
disease, includes fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain
and rash. The Philippines outbreaks are largely seasonal with most episodes
occurring during the wet season (June-February). Around 25% of the people
affected by severe dengue die from the disease. “There is no-one debating that
the actual number of dengue cases are increasing year on year, partly due to
the travel people are doing and urbanization”, says Professor John Mcbride, an
infection disease physician and clinical microbiologist from James Cook
University, in Cairns.

The disease has no treatment but it can be early managed. Most cases in the
Philippines, many people die from the disease because others couldn’t afford
to be treated at an hospital. In order to prevent these kind of situations to
happen, we must take actions on how we could avert ourselves from being
affected by the disease. There are ways on how to prevent mosquitoes from
making your homes a habitat of their kind; one is always cover stored waters in
any container. And another is using mosquito coils at home. Those are just few
of the ways, it’s easier and better to prevent it than to be treated where
expenses are expected expensive.

Mosquitoes may be little, but they carry disease agents that could cause your
life at risk. Don’t belittle them and think like a grown up. Prevent them and be
healthy.
