1. A Brief History Of The Chakras

Before beginning any journey, you

must know where you are starting.
Learning to recognize the different
chakras within yourself and others
will help you transform the way in
which you live in this world. But
in order to recognize, to heal,
and balance the chakras, it’s
important to know exactly what
you’re studying. In that case, let’s
first start with a brief history of the
chakra system.
The Vedas, written during 2,000
to 600 B.C., depict the Aryans
invading India on chariots. The
original word “chakra” or “cakra”
is written in this text, meaning
wheel, and referring to the
wheels of the chariots that this
people group used. The wheel is
significant because it represents
the eternal, cyclical nature of
time. The sun, whose path is also
cyclical, is the center of balance for our planet. In this way, the
wheel, or “chakra”, is symbolic of celestial order and balance in
our personal lives.
Chakras are again mentioned in the Yoga Upanishads (circa 600
A.D) and in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali (circa 200 B.C). In the
tenth century the text known as Gorakshashatakam was written,
explaining various meditation techniques relating to the chakras.
The main texts explaining chakras, however, were the Sat-Cakra-
Nirupana, written in 1577, and the Padaka-Pancaka, written in the
10th century. Both texts describe the seven chakra centers and
practices related to maintaining and restoring balance. Arthur
Avalon translated these texts into English in 1919 in his book The
Serpent Power. It is through this book that the Western World
was introduced to the idea of chakras.

4
2. Chakra Basics

At the core of this system are seven chakras, which serve as the
basic energy centers of the body. The seven chakras correspond
to the seven major nerve ganglia of the body, branching from
the spinal column. The fact that ancient texts were accurately
describing nerve centers well before Western medicine adds a
level of credibility to the system of chakras and its related sister-
sciences.

The six lower chakras, all the chakras except the crown, have
three major energy channels running through them called nadis.
Susumna is the most efficient for carrying energy as it runs
straight up and down the spine. The ida nadi criss-crosses

5
through the chakras, passing through the left nostril. The pingala
nadi also weaves a pattern through the chakras, passing through
the right nostril. In a healthy, balanced being, energy flows
uninhibited through the chakras. However, the majority of people
have chakras blocked by some impurity or another, forcing the
flow of energy solely through ida and pingala, and completely
avoiding the “energy highway”, susumna.

Both external situations and internal habits, such as tension that

frequently disturbs the body or negative thoughts about oneself,
can cause a chakra to become imbalanced. When the chakras are
not balanced properly, your body does not work as effectively as
it could, forcing some chakras to over-compensate while others
are forced into submission. When this happens, your body pays
the price, physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Additionally,
chakras are affected with the various issues we face in life and
how we choose to deal with them, both internally and externally in
our interactions with the world. As centers of force, it’s helpful to
think of chakras as physical locations where we receive, absorb,
and distribute life energies.

Each of the seven chakras correlate to a specific function within

the body, starting from the root at the base of the spine and
working their way up through the genitals, navel, heart, throat,
third eye (center of forehead), and crown of the head. When a
chakra is no longer functioning properly, the results appear in
various ways, some that are apparent to the eye and others that
only you can recognize after deep reflection and meditation.

The chakras rely on each other to function properly. It is

impossible to find balance if even one chakra is overlooked. The
ultimate goal is to bring the balance known as sattva to all of the
chakras, a blend of activity and passivity that lead to harmony
and balance in your life. When this balance happens, not only will
your body function properly, but also your mind and spirit will be
freed, allowing you to live in a state of profound gratitude and joy.
The beauty is that balancing chakras not only affects your life, but
also the lives of those around you.

4. Recognizing Imbalances In The Chakras

When a chakra is not functioning properly it has a ripple effect

throughout our lives and even into the lives of those around us. At
any given moment, depending on a wide range of circumstances
– both positive and negative – the energy in a chakra can become
stuck or excessive, causing an imbalance in the system. People
in tune with their system can recognize these changes and begin
working on correction, whether through simple exercises, major
life changes, yoga, and meditation. Sometimes the energy in a
chakra is stuck only for a matter of minutes and other times it can
be stagnant for years, or even a lifetime.

Use this reference guide to recognize imbalances in the seven

chakras. The lists below show how a weakness, whether a
deficiency or excess, in a specific chakra manifests negatively in
daily life and activities.

responsibilities that results in either high stress or simply
giving up

moved or accomplished
• Often described as a messy or disorganized person
• Travel frequently
• Resistant to exercise, healthy diet, and fresh air
• Greediness, hoarding money or possessions
• A sense of feeling ungrounded often – living in the head
instead of the body

5. Rebalancing The Chakras With Crystals

Depending on how long energy has been stuck in a particular

chakra and to the extent of imbalance, redirecting prana back
through the energy centers can be a simple fix, but often it
requires daily dedication and intention, especially when dealing
with issues that have been chronic in life. It’s important to
remember that our chakra systems are delicate and unique.
Patience is definitely required when working to restore balance,
but so much can be learned along the way.

12
Coordinating Chakras And Crystals
Crystals have a powerful natural energy that, when in tune to the
user, can help to restore balance in the chakras, also positively
affecting the mood by clearing negative energy out. It is thought
that by using stones and crystals in contact with the body, light
and positive energy can be brought into the body, its chakras, and
its auras.

When using crystals and stones appropriately, their vibration

coordinates with the individual’s, linking them into a powerful
source – the vibration of the universe. In doing so, one will
feel an immediate increase in positive energy and, with time, a
transformative experience from disease, discomfort, and poor
health to well-being, happiness, and incredible health.

As you have learned, each chakra has a color that coordinates

to it. When using crystals and stones to heal the chakras, the
same color scheme is used. While there are different stones and

13
crystals that can be used for healing each chakra, an individual
(sometimes through a bit of trial and error) should be able to tell
which stone is best suited for them. Oftentimes, the first crystal
or stone that you are naturally drawn to (whether seeing it in
person or just reading the name) is the one that is best suited to
heal and balance your personal chakras.
Note: Although there are many different stones and crystals for each chakra, if
you do not have immediate access to the varieties listed below, a clear quartz
crystal can be used with any chakra, which is why they are always great to
have on hand.

1. Muladhara (Root Chakra) = Red 4. Anahata (Heart Chakra) = Green 7. Sahasrara (Crown Chakra) = Clear
(and black) (and pink) (or violet)

Preparing Crystals And Stones For Healing

In order for the healing qualities of crystals and stones to work

effectively, they must be prepared for use. This process, often
referred to as “clearing”, is incredibly important and, unfortunately,
often overlooked. It’s important to remember that this clearing
doesn’t just take place once, but rather frequently – as soon as
the stone is purchased and after each and every use. The clearer
your crystal or stone is the more effective it becomes. Over
time, as it is exposed to different energies and events, the crystal
or stone can become cloudy and will no longer be effective, or
even feel good, when it is being used. People who are familiar to
using crystals, those who have become sensitive to the different
qualities of energy, can often tell just by touch if a crystal has
been cleared and is ready for use. Those who are sensitive to this
type of energy will often describe a clear crystal as feeling cold,
even tingly, when touched, with energy that is both bright and
positive. On the other hand, a crystal that has not been cleared
will feel warm (or even hot) to the touch, with energy that is heavy
and cloudy or murky.

There are many different ways to clear crystals and stones to

prepare them for healing. Here are a few of the most common
and effective. It is important to pay attention to the type of stone
or crystal you want to clear, as certain methods are more effective
for specific stones than others.

1. Smudging – Light the end of a smudgestick (often a bunch of

dried cedar and sage tied together, although certain cultures use
different elements such as juniper instead of cedar) and allow to
burn for several minutes. Once the smudgestick is producing a
good amount of smoke, run your crystals or stones back and forth
through the smoke. This method is great to do before and after
each healing session to keep the crystals and stones in optimal
condition.

2. Moon Soaking – Although this is the most time consuming

of methods it is definitely the most powerful. In order for your
stones and crystals to be cleared completely by the moonlight,
you must leave them out for at least one full period of moonlight,
sometime between the Full Moon and the New Moon. If you can

15
time your clearing on the night of a waning moon it is said to be
even more powerful. It is up to you how many nights you want to
leave your crystals out to soak. Some people prefer just one night
while others will leave them soaking for up to eight days at a time.

It is important to remember not to let your stones and crystals

soak in the sun if you are leaving them out for the moonlight for
several nights. The light of the sun can cause damage to the
coloring of your stones and crystals and even cause internal
cracks that can alter their healing qualities by damaging their
original energy.

3. Cleansing Breath – One of the fastest and easiest ways to

clear stones and crystals is through your breath (sometimes
referred to as “sacred breath”). The process is simple – you
simply blow on the stone – but it does take someone with
experience in energy and visualization to make this technique
effective. When blowing, you must feel positive energy pouring
out from your mouth and removing the negative energy from
the stone. If you can actually see this take place it is even more
powerful. It can take some practice so don’t get discouraged
from this method right away. Try it first, and, if it doesn’t work,

16
use another method. But keep trying!

4. Burying – There are a few ways you can bury your stones or
crystals for clearing. One popular method is burying them indoors
in a bowl filled with dried herbs and organic material, such as
sandalwood, rose petals, sage, frankincense, and myrrh. This
method is gentler than others as well as pleasing for your senses,
although it does take a bit longer – several hours or up to 48
hours is often recommended.

You can also clear your stones and crystals by burying them
in sea salt. This method is effective and quicker than using
herbs (a few hours can do the trick), but it can be more abrasive
on the energetic qualities of the stones, which is why it is not
recommended to do on a regular basis.

Lastly, you can actually bury your stones in the earth, either
outside in your yard or in a pot of dirt and soil on your patio. Just
be sure you mark where you bury them so you don’t lose them.
The hole you bury them in should be no bigger than one crystal.

17
Which means that if you are doing several at once you will dig
one small hole for each. Bury the crystals and stones with the
smallest point turned down so that part is buried the deepest.

5. Cool Water - Using cool tap water to rinse your stones and
crystals is another effective (and quick) way to clear them.
Depending on the shape of your stone or crystal, hold it so that
the water drips down and off of the smallest point. For example, if
you have a crystal pyramid, hold the base of the pyramid nearest
to the faucet so that the top of the pyramid is pointing down. This
helps to ensure that all of the negative energy goes directly down
and out.

It is important to never use hot or even warm water when clearing

your stones or crystals as it can cause damage and will not be as
effective.

Personalizing And Dedicating Crystals And Stones For Healing

18
In order for your cleared stones and crystals to become even
more effective in the healing process, it is a good idea to
personalize them through a simple act of meditation. This easy,
but crucial step, asks you to take a moment to focus on exactly
what you want a particular stone or crystal to do for you. Which
chakra is it for? How do you feel now? How do you want to feel
after?

While asking these questions, hold the crystal lightly in your

hand. Notice if the energy changes when you propose a specific
intent for the stone. If you receive a negative or heavy energy
from your cleared stone it is its way of saying no to your intent.
If this happens, change your intent, even just slightly through
rephrasing, and see if your stone will agree to help you in this
endeavor.

By doing this you help to align your energy with the energy of the
stone even further, linking you both together to create even more
powerful personalized transformation.

The dedication portion of this process is important because it

helps to keep then energy of your stones and crystals positive.
Although you still will clear them before and after each healing
session, they will be in a purer state to begin with, which means
simple methods of clearing will still be effective.

In order to dedicate your stone or crystal and keep it clear of

negative energy you must attach it to a high level of healing, such
as a deity, goddess, or god. Some examples are Isis, Yemaya,
Kali, Ganesh, White Buffalo Calf Woman, Lady of Guadalupe,
Hanuman, Buddha, Jesus, Hecate, etc. You can choose a
different deity for each stone you use or the same – it doesn’t
matter. What does matter is that you choose a deity who aligns
with your purpose for using the stone. If a figure doesn’t come to
mind immediately, do a bit of research. Any religion, any text, any
myth will work as long as you believe strongly in the power of the
figure you choose.

Once you have chosen your figure, hold your cleared crystal or
stone in your hand and simply ask the deity to connect itself to
19
the stone. Your stone or crystal has living energy, although it
doesn’t move, and the figure you choose will harness its energy
to the stone’s energy, creating a powerful team that cannot be
broken unless someone clears and rededicates it.

Using Stones And Crystals For Healing Chakras

There are several ways to use your stones and crystals to help
heal and restore the balance of the chakras in your body. Just
the simple act of being near them, such as on an altar, during
meditation can be powerful enough to start noticing real change
in the body and mind. Others will hold a stone or crystal in
their hand, either during meditation or simply during day-to-day
activities, such as reading a book or traveling. Some people find
it powerful to wear your stones and crystals, such as in the form
of necklaces or bracelets.

Another more intentional way of using your stones and crystals

is to place them on the body in relation to the chakra they are
connected to. For example, if you are working on restoring your
Throat Chakra (Vishuddha), you could place a piece of blue topaz

20
on your throat either while lying down in meditation or simply
holding to the throat while seated.

And while all of these methods are powerful and great for
everyday use, a process referred to as the “Laying On Of The
Stones” is reputed to be the most effective, often rumored to have
an immediate and lasting impact. In order to properly perform the
Laying On Of The Stones you would need to enlist the help of a
friend, preferably a natural healer or someone who is in tune with
universal energy.

In order to begin you will need to have cleared seven stones or

crystals, one for each chakra in the body. If you don’t have all of
the various stones for each chakra, a clear quartz crystal can work
on any chakra.

The individual who is receiving the healing will lie down on their
back, preferably on the floor. Place a blanket under the head and

21
a rolled blanket under the knees to ensure maximum comfort.
The room should be quiet and comfortably warm.

The healer will then place the stones on each chakra center
starting from the lowest chakra, the Root Chakra (Muladhara),
and working their way up to the top chakra, the Crown Chakra
(Sahasrara). It is important that all of the stones and crystals are
laid on the body in the same manner, either points up towards the
crown of the head or points down towards the feet (depending on
the shape that is being used). Doing this ensures that all of the
negative energy is moving the same direction through the body,
either down towards the earth or up towards the sky.

Once all of the stones have been laid the healer can either use
his or her hands to continue the healing process (such as through
Reiki if the healer is trained) or they can simply sit quietly next to
the person being healed, monitoring and observing the energy in
the room.

If you at any point have a difficult time keeping a particular stone

or crystal on the body, allow it to roll off and do not use it. This
is a sign that it is not needed or should not be used during this
healing session. You can try using another crystal in its place or
simply leave that chakra center with nothing on it. This is neither
wrong nor bad. Once all of the stones have rolled off or the healer
believes that the healing is done, the person receiving the healing
should be allowed to continue lying down without any stones on
the body. It is now when the aura can be brushed and cleared.

Doing The Laying Of The Stones can be very intense and there is
usually a huge and immediate energetic shift. Oftentimes trauma
and painful memories and feelings will be brought to the surface.
Allow this to happen, as it is part of the healing process. Physical
clearing also can take place during this process, so be sure to
stay well hydrated over the next several days to avoid getting
headaches and other aches and pains.
