Solution to Problem 125 Bearing Stress

Problem 125

In Fig. 1-12, assume that a 20-mm-diameter rivet joins the plates that are each 110 mm wide. The allowable
stresses are 120 MPa for bearing in the plate material and 60 MPa for shearing of rivet. Determine (a) the
minimum thickness of each plate; and (b) the largest average tensile stress in the plates.

Solution 125

Part (a):
From shearing of rivet:
P = τ Arivets

1 2
P = 60[ π(20 ) ]
4

P = 6000π N

From bearing of plate material:

P = σb Ab

6000π = 120(20t)

t = 7.85 mm answer

Part (b): Largest average tensile stress in the plate:

P = σA

6000π = σ[ 7.85(110 − 20) ]

σ = 26.67 MPa answer

Good evening, good sir; i was going to ask that where did u get the 20t? Does the diameter of the rivet have
that initial thickness of the two plates? Thats y u use it 20t?.
