A. Roman Numerals
Roman Numeral I V X L C D M
Hindu – Arabic Numerals 1 5 10 550 100 500 1000
To get the value of the Roman Numeral, add the numerals from the left to right when the
smaller of two numerals is on the right.
XI represents 10 + 1 = 11
VII represents 5+1+1=7
DCCLXXXVI represents 500 + 100 + 100 + 50 + 10 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 = 786
When the smaller number is on the left, subtract the smaller number on the left from the
bigger number on the right to give the value of the Roman numeral.
Examples:
IX represents 10 – 1 = 9
XC represents 100 – 10 = 90
MCMLXIV represents 1000 + (1000 – 100) + 50 + 10 + (5 – 1) = 1964
Note: Only one smaller Roman numeral can be used to the left of the bigger one.
Examples: IX represents 10 – 1 = 9
IIX does not have a value because the representation is incorrect
To represent a larger number, place a bar over the Roman numeral. This bar indicates that the
value of the numeral is to be multiplied by 1000.
