D. Explain
1. Teaching Part
The teacher will explain and give examples on Irony and its three types.
What is Irony?
Irony is a figure of speech which is a contradiction or inconsistency between what is
expected and what actually occurs.
Verbal Irony
Verbal irony is the use of words to mean something different from what a person
actually says.
Ex:
2. In Romeo and Juliet, the audience knows that Juliet is only asleep-not dead-but
Romeo does not, and he kills himself.
3. In Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, we know that the old woman bringing the
apple is the wicked queen who wants to kill Snow White, but she does not. She
purchases the apple, takes a bite, and falls.
4. Another Disney movie, Beauty and the Beast, has examples of dramatic irony. The
audience knows from the beginning of the movie that the beast is a prince, but
Belle does not.
2
5. In Toy Story, human characters are not aware that the toys speak and move while
the audience is aware
Situational Irony
It involves a discrepancy between what is expected to happen and what actually
happens.
Situational irony occurs when the exact opposite of what is meant to happen, happens.
Ex:
1. Ralph wakes up late and thinks he is going to be late to school. After rushing
around to get dressed, he realizes it is Saturday.
2. The fire station burns down while the firemen are out on a call.
3. Sara is trying to avoid a water gun fight that her brothers are having and she falls
into a wet patch.
4. The thieves robbed the police station.
5. A marriage counselor filed for divorce
E. Elaborate
The teacher will give the students an activity work on.
Direction: The students will be grouped into three and they will present a short role play
with ironic situations.
The teacher will provide scenario and the students will act it out.
They are given 5 minutes to prepare.

Group 3 – Situational Irony
F. Evaluation
1. A type of irony in which the audience knows more about the present or future
circumstances than a character in the story.
2. It is a figure of speech that use words to convey the opposite of their literal meaning.
3. When words are used to say the opposite of what is actually meant.
4. This irony occurs when actions or events have the opposite result from what is expected or
what is intended.
G. Extend
Checking and Presentation of the group work.
IV. Assessment
Direction: Identify what type of irony.
1. In real life, an ambulance comes to a woman's house to take her to the hospital,
hopefully, to save her life. On the way to the hospital, the ambulance is hit by a truck,
and everyone on board the ambulance is killed. (Situational)
2. You work all afternoon cooking a fancy dinner for your mother. When she takes her
first bite, she spits it out into her napkin without you seeing and says to you, "Oh
Sweetie, this is wonderful!" (Verbal)
3. A movie you are watching shows a woman jogging in the woods. The next scene shows
a mountain lion lying in wait down the path where the woman is jogging. (Dramatic)
4. In your history book, you read about a young man in the Revolutionary War who kills
a British soldier. That soldier who was killed turns out to be his favorite cousin.
(Situational)
4
5. Romeo arrives at the Capulet family tomb to find his love, Juliet supposedly dead.
However, we the audience know that Juliet is not dead; she merely took a potion to
make it look like she died for her motives. When the audience of a story knows more
than the characters involved, what type of irony is employed? (Dramatic)
6. "He waited his whole darn life to take that flight, and as the plane crashed down he
said, "Now isn't this nice?" - from the song "Ironic" by Alannis Morisette (Verbal)
7. In the children's story "Little Red Riding Hood" we know that the wolf has eaten the
grandmother, but Little Red Riding Hood does not know that. (Dramatic)
8. Bob has waited all day long to take a cigarette break. As he walks outside, he sees
that a NO SMOKING sign has just been posted. (Situational)
