Piano

(for Bachelor of Music Degree Programme)


Applicants are required to perform one selection from each of the following five groups:

 One Etude by Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Debussy, Scriabin, Bartok, Stravinsky, Moszkowski, Prokofiev, Ligeti or
Bolcom.
 Any Prelude & Fugue chosen from the Well Tempered Clavier by J.S. Bach
 A complete Sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, or Clementi
 A major work from the Romantic period*
 A representative work from the 20th century to the present*

No exceptions or substitutions will be permitted for the above requirements.  

All audition repertoire must be performed from memory. No concerti or transcriptions are permitted. The applicant
may be asked to play scales and arpeggios, and the examination may also include sight-reading of a short musical
excerpt. Any remaining questions regarding repertoire can be addressed to the Head of Piano Studies At the time of
the audition, applicants will be asked to submit a list of works studied within the last three years to the audition
panel. 

(for Graduate Diploma in Piano Performance) 


Applicants should prepare a 60-minute, memorized recital program offering contrasting styles from at least three
different periods, and including a complete sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, or Clementi. No concerti
are permitted. Candidates are also asked to submit a list of the works studied within the past four years to the
audition panel. The repertoire list should be presented to the conservatory piano faculty at the time of the audition. 

Any questions or concerns regarding audition repertoire can be addressed to the Head of Piano Studies. 

Applicants should also make note of the following:

 All audition repertoire must be performed from memory.


 No concerti or transcriptions are permitted.
 The examination may also include sight-reading of a short musical excerpt.

Repertoire validation list: Each applicant must submit a list of works he/she has studied within the last three years to the
audition panel.

ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
BACHELOR OF MUSIC (HONOURS) DEGREE

1. Academic Status

Candidates with the following full-time qualifications (of any discipline) are suitable to apply for admission to the Bachelor of
Music (Hons) Degree programme: 

High School Certificate (from any country) 


Music Middle School 
G.C.E. 'A' level College/Polytechnic Diploma 
Music Diploma (obtained through full-time studies at music middle schools or equivalent) 
Indonesian SMU UAN 
International Baccalaureate (IB) 
STPM (Malaysia) 
Gradings obtained through external music examinations (example: ABRSM certificates) will be not considered.
Music diploma students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and LaSalle College of the Arts can be given advance
credits. 
Candidates applying for the major in Recording Arts and Science are expected to have ‘A’ level equivalent passes in
Mathematics and Physics or Diplomas accredited for Engineering courses.

2. Audition

Application for Academic Year 2010/2011 is now closed. Online application for admission to Academic Year 2011/2012 will
begin from 1 September 2010. 

Regional 'LIVE' auditions will be conducted from November 2010 to March 2010 in the following cities:

3. InterviewCandidates shortlisted to attend the ‘LIVE’ auditions will be required to take an English Oral Test. Applicants
auditioning with a DVD recording are required to submit an additional DVD recording of a self-introduction on the topic of:
“Why the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music is appropriate for the next stage in your musical development”. Please also
read the FAQs for more details on this requirement.
GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MUSIC PERFORMANCE
1. Academic statusCandidates must have obtained a Bachelor of Music degree or its equivalent from a recognized
institution before they can be enrolled into the Graduate Diploma programme. The Degree obtained from the previous
university must be of performance in orchestral instrument, piano or composition majors. Final-year music undergraduates
may apply for admission, but an offer will only be valid upon confirming the graduation from the university/conservatory.
2. Audition and InterviewApplication for Academic Year 2010/2011 is now closed. Online application for admission to
Academic Year 2011/2012 will begin from 1 September 2010.

Regional 'LIVE' auditions will be conducted from November 2010 to March 2010 (see above under 'BACHELOR OF MUSIC
(HONOURS) DEGREE')

Applicants who do not live in Singapore or close to an audition centre may submit a DVD recording of their audition pieces,
although we prefer candidates to attend the 'LIVE' auditions where possible. Composition majors, in addition to submitting
written materials, are expected to have a reasonable level of proficiency in a performance area and in music theory and will
be required to go through an interview for selection.
