HAVERING YOUNG MUSICIANS AWARDS 2015

For instrumentalists and singers of approximately grade
6 standard or above, and composers in year 9 or above to
a maximum age of 19 years (at date of final).
All performance candidates take part in a master class with a
leading professional musician.
Categories are:
Violin/Viola
Cello/Double Bass
Guitar
Flute/Recorder
Oboe/Bassoon
Clarinet/Saxophone
Brass
Voice
Piano
Percussion (orchestral/kit)

Two contrasting pieces to be prepared of no more than 12
minutes in total duration.
Entrants will be expected to perform their pieces to a high standard,
similar to that required for an examination. The guest tutor will
spend time with each individual performer, working on aspects of
technique, musicianship and communication. The classes are
informal, friendly and a shared experience for all.
Candidates may enter more than one category. A separate entry
form to be completed for each. Multiple entry performers who are
selected to perform at the Finalists Concert will be asked to perform
on one instrument only.
Classes take place at the Music Centre on the following dates:
Across the two weeks beginning April 20th & 27th.
Precise details of individual classes will be sent to each entrant as
soon as they are confirmed.
Performers will be required to stay for the duration of the class.

Family and friends are very welcome to attend.
Candidates must make their own arrangements for an accompanist;
this is a vital part of performance preparation. Please email
[email protected] if you would like contact
details of recommended accompanists.
Candidates must provide a spare copy of the music for the guest
tutor.
Failure to adhere to regulations may disqualify a candidate
from proceeding to the Finalists Concert.
Guest tutors will make brief written assessments of each candidate
and nominate particular performers to go forward to the Finalists
Concert. An independent guest adjudicator will allocate prizes on
the basis of performances at the final, in conjunction with tutors
reports from the master classes.
The guest tutors and adjudicators decisions are final in respect of
choice of performers and pieces for the Finalists Concert, and prize
allocation.
THE COMPOSITION CLASS

This is open to any student in year 9 or above.
Your piece should be no longer than 5 minutes in duration.
It may be in any musical style, but must be suitable for concert hall
performance.
It must be appropriately and accurately notated, with bar numbers.
Performance instructions such as tempo, dynamics, articulation and
phrasing should be included as appropriate.
You must be prepared for a performance in which there is an
acceptable degree of accuracy. Consider writing for students that
you know, and/or yourself. If for any reason this is not feasible,
please contact the Music Centre for help and advice WELL IN
ADVANCE. If student performers are not available for the workshop
session, a recording of your piece is acceptable as an alternative.
GCSE and A Level compositions are welcome.
Entrants to this class may also enter ANY OTHER class as a
performer using a separate entry form.
PLEASE NOTE: Finished scores must be sent to the Music

Centre by SATURDAY 18th APRIL 2015
All entries will be assessed by a professional composer who will
consider whether the piece is:
IDIOMATIC (well written for the instrument(s)/voice(s))
ORIGINAL
EFFECTIVE
There may be a workshop session for all entrants, at which the pieces
will be discussed. Otherwise, you will receive a full written appraisal
from the composition tutor, with helpful comments and suggestions.
The tutor will decide if he or she wishes to nominate a piece or pieces to
be performed at the Finalists Concert. Other entrants will be invited to
have their piece performed at one of Havering Music Schools concerts.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT THE COMPETITIONS:

Havering Music School hosts two annual competitions. The HAVERING
YOUNG MUSICIANS AWARDS event is held in the spring period each
year. This is the boroughs premier competition, inaugurated in 1980 by
the London Borough of Havering and the Havering Chamber of
Commerce and Industry. It is open to advanced level musicians of
approximately Grade 6 standard and above. All candidates perform in a
master class led by a specialist professional musician. There is also a
composition category.
The HAVERING JUNIOR MUSICIANS FESTIVAL will take place in the
Summer Term 2015. There are two categories; Year 11 and under and
Year 7 and under. This competition has been held annually since 1990.
Candidates in each class and instrumental/vocal category perform two
pieces in the presence of an invited adjudicator.
This year we are delighted to be working once again with musicians from
the Royal Opera House in the master classes and Finalists Concerts. This
is a strand of the partnership work between the Royal Opera House
and Havering Music Education Hub.
These events aim to encourage students to strive for their highest
personal standards of technique and musicianship. Prizes are generously
donated by local sponsors.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:
Entrants must be either full time students living in the borough,
and/or attending school in Havering, or be in higher education and
supported by the London Borough of Havering.
Candidates may enter both competitions, but please note you must
not enter the Junior event if you have won the Title Cup at a
previous Junior Musician event or a residential course prize in the
Senior event. You may not enter the Senior event if you have
previously won the Young Musicians Title Cup. Please check criteria
with your teacher.
At the Young Musicians event approximately twelve entrants will be
invited to perform at the Finalists Concert, which will take place at
The Salvation Army Halls on Saturday 16th May 2015 at 7.00pm. All
finalists will receive a certificate.
You must be available to perform at the
Finalists Concert if invited to do so.
Entry to both competitions is free.
