COURSE DESCRIPTION
Ceramics 3-4 provides students with an opportunity to continue to explore and experiment with
three-dimensional design in clay. Students will develop an awareness of functional and
nonfunctional form, knowledge of ceramic techniques and glazes, as well as an aesthetic
understanding of design and craftsmanship. Students will have opportunities to develop a
variety of ceramics forms by hand building methods as well as throwing on the potter’s wheel.
Lastly, students will also have the opportunity to participate in the district and school art shows.

STANDARDS BASED INSTRUCTION


All instruction will be designed according to the Arizona State Visual Arts Standards -

1. CREATE - students will develop new ideas and apply ceramic disciplines, techniques and
processes to communicate in original or interpretive work.

2. RESPOND - students will respond, present, evaluate, and demonstrate and give meaning
to the development of thoughts, ideas, and concepts in ceramics. Students will reflect
upon and assess the characteristics and merits of their work and the work of others.

3. CONNECT- students will learn and identify historical and universal contexts and themes in
ceramic art.

4. PRESENT- students will participate and present their ideas through daily ceramic
activities, participation and attendance in ceramics is vital

GRADING

CREATE: PROJECTS/PERFORMANCE - 50%


This grade is an average of all class work assessed by project rubrics including: meeting project
objectives, completion, effort, craftsmanship, and creativity.
RESPOND – 30%
Students are given a variety of assignments including art history, note taking, guided reading and writing
activities to assess their knowledge of ceramic history, along with self and peer assessments and
presentations.
CONNECT: PORTFOLIO AND TESTS - 10%
They also have a final assessment to demonstrate the depth of student growth. The assessment has 4
components: creating, presenting, responding, and connecting. Create a ceramic piece, present and
demonstrate knowledge of cultural heritage, and application of art criticism. The final assessment will be
part of the portfolio/test grade for Ceramics 3 - 4.

Semester Final will count as 10% of the overall grade.


PRESENT- 10%
In ceramics the majority of the work is completed during class in the studio. Students are expected to
present their work with supporting materials for critique and exhibition purposes. Attendance is vital. All
students are required to participate in classroom cleanup responsibilities and proper return of tools and
materials.

GRADE REPORTS AND GRADING SCALE


Parents will receive progress reports via parent portal (ParentVue) as well as progress reports via
US mail every three weeks.
A = 90% - 100%
B = 80% - 89%
C = 70% - 79%
D = 60% - 69%
F = 59% and Below
*Accommodations and modifications will be included per IEP or 504 plan.

MATERIALS AND FEES


This course has a $20.00 lab FEE PER SEMESTER to cover the cost of supplies. This fee must
be paid at the bookstore and the receipt needs to be given to the art teacher to be recorded. This
fee provides materials such as clay, glazes, paints, tools, and other art supplies that are
necessary for students to have a productive and enjoyable ceramics class. Students are
expected to come to class with a writing utensil and paper.

ID’S
All students are expected to wear their ID’s at all times. ID’s are required to access many school
services. Students who violate this expectation may be subject to disciplinary action.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES
Any electronic device (cell phone, Ipod, etc.) that causes a disruption in a classroom or
educational setting, student will be ask to put away first. If electronic device continues to cause a
disruption device will be confiscated by security.

ACADEMIC AND ATTENDANCE INTERVENTIONS


“Absent” is defined as nonattendance in an assigned class or activity for more than
one-half of the period. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
“Tardy” is defined as not being in the assigned class or activity when the tardy bell has
finished ringing. (PUHSD Governing Board Policy J-1561 JHR)
***Students may fail the class for the semester in any course, when reaching a total of
12 excused/unexcused absences and after school-documented interventions have
been exhausted. (Student Procedures Handbook page 26)

ATTENDANCE
Ceramics 3 and 4 are studio classes with a majority of the course work done in the
classroom. Attendance is vital to the success of each student. Clay dries out when
left unattended for even a short time and projects cannot be taken home to
work on; therefore, be sure your student is in class every day possible.
Daily participation in classroom instruction activities is essential to earning credit in
every course.

Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Principal’s office. A process will be in force to ensure
parents are notified and interventions are implemented to support student learning and success.
Senior Notice (Graduation Qualification Date)
The last day for seniors to complete and submit assignments to qualify for gradation is
May 15, 2020.

TARDY POLICY (Late Attendance Policy)


- Students are expected to be seated in their classrooms ready to begin classwork prior to
the late bell ringing.
- A one-minute warning bell signals the student to get to class quickly
- A tardy is defined as “not being in an assigned seat when the late bell rings”
- A tardy in a class may not be excused by another teacher beyond 5 minutes of a class
starting.
- A tardy beyond 5 minutes may only be excused by administration, counseling, nurse, or
student support center.

MAKE UP WORK
Students need to be in class 100% of the time. Parents must call 602-440-1600 to excuse a
student’s absence. Teachers may notify parents if a student has been absent for more than 5
days. Students are encouraged to take advantage of Advisory opportunities to make up missing
work. Assignments that are not turned in will be given a zero. Students are allowed to make up
work, however it is the student’s responsibility to find out what work was missed during an
absence. Projects turned in late may not be eligible for full credit. Students cannot make up class
participation points or bell work/class discussions points.

Advisory time is available before school, after school, or at lunch, if arrangements have been
made with the teacher. All work must be made up regardless of excused or unexcused absences.

Office Hours: If a student or parent has any concerns, an appointment can be made with the
teacher. Please do not hesitate to email, call, or come by my office for any reason. I will always
make time to help my students succeed.

TITLE I PROGRAM
“Academic tutoring and test preparation is available to all students. Additional support for
passing classes and graduating on is the intent of these services. Support through Title I funding
is available in the areas of: Math, Reading, and English. If interested, please contact the Principal
Ms. Stephanie Streeter, or Principal Assistant for Instruction Mr. Tad Roeder for additional
information at (602) 764-8500.

Rules of the classroom:


1. Be on time and be prepared
2. Enter and exit ceramic room in an orderly fashion (dress code enforced)
3. Students are expected to wear ID’s at all times
4. Have portfolio/folder ready at beginning of class
5. Be nice and help each other, ask questions if needed
6. Quietly and actively participate
7. Respect all persons, materials, tools, and the studio
8. Respect other artwork and space
9. Stop all activity and direct your attention to the teacher when given a signal
10. Clean up all work areas. All students are required to participate in daily table team
classroom cleanup duties and to properly return all tools and materials, and to store
clay projects properly.
