8.0 SAMPLE CALCULATION

When both flow rate of solution is 0.10 L/min:

Volume of sample, 50 mL Concentration of HCl in 0.25 mol/L

Vs standard solution, CHCl,s
Concentration of NaOH in 0.1 M Volume of NaOH 29.7 mL
the feed vessel, CNaOH,f titrated, V1
Volume of HCl for 10 mL Concentration of NaOH 0.1 mol/L
quenching, VHCl,s used for titration, CNaOH,s

Calculate:

i. Concentration of NaOH entering the reactor, CNaOH,0

CNaOH,0 = (1/2) CNaOH,s

= (1/2) 0.1 mol/L
= 0.05 mol/L

ii. Volume of unreacted quenching HCl, V2

V2 = (CNaOH,s / CHCl,s) × V1
= (0.1/0.25) × 29.7
= 11.88 mL

iii. Volume of HCl reacted with NaOH in sample, V3

V3 = VHCl,s – V2

= 10 – 11.88

= - 1.88 mL
iv. Moles of HCl reacted with NaOH in sample, n1

n1 = (CHCl,s × V3) / 1000

= (0.25 × [-1.88])/1000

= - 0.00047 mol

Moles of unreacted NaOH in sample, n2= n1 = - 0.00047 mol

v. Concentration of unreacted NaOH in the reactor, CNaOH

CNaOH = n2/Vs × 1000

−0.00047
= × 1000
50

= - 0.0094

vi. Conversion of NaOH in the reactor, X

𝐶𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻
X = (1 - ) × 100%
𝐶𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻,0

(−0.0094)
= (1 - ) × 100%
0.05
= 118.8 %

vii. Residence time, τ

τ = VCSTR / F0

= 10 L / (0.10 + 0.10) L/min

= 50 min
viii. Rate constant, k

𝐶𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻,0 − 𝐶
𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻
k = 𝜏𝐶
𝑁𝑎𝑂𝐻2

0.05−(−0.0094)
= 2
50 (−0.0094)

= 13.44 M-1s-1

ix. Rate of reaction, -rA

-rA = kCA2
= 13.44 (- 0.0094)2
= 0.00119
