Lightning Arrester

1. Scope

This specification covers the technical requirements of design, engineering, manufacturing, testing
at manufacturer's works, packing & forwarding, Supply, Storage & Erection of 60 ESE terminals
complete with all accessories for efficient and trouble free operation. The specific requirements are
covered in the enclosed technical data sheet.

Protections of the solar modules are to be protected by lightning capturing system: 60 ESE
terminals. Height of terminal is 5 m, above area to be protected.

The ESE air terminal provides a safe and efficient system for the protection of modules from direct
lightning strikes. The ESE terminal captures the lightning energy at a preferred point. The energy is
conveyed to ground via a downconductor(s). When the energy enters the dedicated lightning earth,
it is safely dissipated without risk to personnel and equipment.

2. How does the Stormaster ESE terminal work?

The Early Streamer Emission air terminal uses the naturally occurring electrical field to complete
the timely release of an upward leader. This process provides for a safe and efficient method of
controlling dangerous lightning energy at a preferred point.

As a thunder storm gathers overhead the ambient electrical field surrounding the ESE begins to
rise in voltage. Upon the approach of a down leader towards the protected area there is a rapid
increase in the electric field which initiates the triggering of an upward streamer from the ESE
terminal. The concept of earlier streamer emission allows for a larger or enhanced area of
protection to be provided by the Stormaster ESE in comparison to a conventional rod.

3. Advantages of the ESE terminal

• A  typical ESE installation consists of a single ESE terminal with an enhanced area of
protection and one or more downconductors connected to a dedicated low impedance
lightning earth.

• LPI’s ESE system is simple to install and requires no special maintenance.

• LPI’s ESE system is a cost effective solution for providing your lightning Protection whilst
providing superior safety.

4. TESTS:

Factory Tests:

Complete tests shall be carried out at the manufacturer's plant to determine the performance,
operating characteristics of the assembled lightning arresters, their respective accessories and to
determine whether or not the guarantees have been met. Unless otherwise specified, all tests shall
be carried out in accordance with relevant IS and shall include the following:

I) Routine/Acceptance Tests:

All routine/acceptance tests shall be witnessed by the purchaser/his authorized representative.

The tests shall include the following:

a) Dry & wet power frequency voltage test

b) Wet test

c) Polluted housing test

II) Type Tests:

The bidder shall furnish type test certificates and results for the following tests along with the
bid for a lightning arrester of identical design.

a) Residual voltage test

b) Current impulse withstand test

c) Operating duty test

d) Pressure-relief test

All routine and acceptance tests shall be witnessed by the Purchaser/Consultant. The bidder
shall furnish copies of type test reports for all tests along with the bid.

5. PRE-COMMISSIONING TESTS

11.1. Contractor shall carry out following tests as pre-commissioning tests. Contractor shall also
perform any additional test based on specialties of the items as per the field instructions of
the equipment Supplier or Employer without any extra cost to the Employer. The
Contractor shall arrange all instruments required for conducting these tests along with
calibration certificates and shall furnish the list of instruments to the Employer for approval.
