(c) A method for the determination of soluble organic compound in Fletcher Darn involves
oxidation of the organic material to CO2 with K2S,08, followed by gravimetric determination of

• the CO, trapped by a column of Na011-coated asbestos. A water sample weighing 6.234 g
produced 2.378 mg of CO,(FW 44.010). Calculate the ppm carbon in the sea water. 15 marks!

• (d) Describe the principle behind adsorption indicators. (8 marks'

QUESTION 5

(a) A crystalline precipitate is desirable in gravimetric analysis. Discuss factors that affect the
formation of a crystalline precipitate and possible solutions to problems encountered in
precipitate formation. [16 marks]

(b) Why is less it desirable to wash AgCI precipitate with aqueous NaNO3 than with 1-1NO3

• solution?

(c) Many ionic precipitates are washed with electrolyte instead of water. Explain

(d) A mixture containing only A1203 (12 W 101.96) and Fe203 (FW159.69) weighs 2.001 g. When
heated under a stream of I I, the AI203 is unchanged, but the Fe203 is converted to metallic Fe
plus 1-1,0 (g). If the residue weighs 1.994 g, what is the weight percent of Fe,03 in the original
mixture? (5 marks]
