Overview

Q1: State the main ideas of each habit?

Be Proactive:

Proactive means exercising your power of choice between the circumstances you receive
from the world and your response you need to take control of your life in the face of all
the opportunities and situations that arise.

Beginning with end in mind:

Beginning with the end in mind means being clear about who you want to be and where
you want to go

Put first thing first:

Habit three is all about prioritization .we should have a sense of distinguishing between
urgent and important. This chapter focuses on developing leadership abilities and
explaining the difference between management and leadership. It’s all about setting our
priorities before us start working on something.

Seek to understand then to be understood:

Most important word to know in mastering this habit is “listen. Listen simply to understand,
to see how the other party sees things.to work productively with someone is to
emphatically listening to them.

Think:

Win/win is a character based approach to human interactions. And character traits must
include traits of Integrity, maturity and abundance mentality.

Synergy:

Synergy means that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. It is to extract the best
of each, never confusing uniformity with unity.
Sharpening the saw:

Sharpening the saw means to renewing ourselves physically, mentally, socially and
spiritually. . No habits in the world will take you far unless you preserve, take care and
keep improving on yourself.

Q2: List concisely lessons learned from each habit:

Be proactive:

Being proactive means exercising your power of choice between the circumstances
you receive from the world and your response. If you feel down it’s
because you allowed the situation to bring you down.it is us who choose to be calm
or to be frustrated on the situations we came across at the end choice is ours.and in
that choice lies our growth and our freedom. Circle of concern matters most wasting
time and energy on things which are uncontrollable is totally wrong the more you focus
on the things you can control, the more your abilities and skills improve. Which in turn
will further enlarge your circle of influence.

Begin with end in mind:

Beginning with the end in mind means being clear about who you want to be and
where you want to go; and then travel that path .Habit two is based on imagination
and on the idea that two different forms of creation exist mental creation and physical
creation. The mental creation comes first, and the physical creation follows the mental
one. . each day of your life contributes your life as a whole. A sense of mission helps
a person to determine his short and long term goals. Covey says that if you are not
clear about the mental creation of where you want to be you are the mercy
of randomness and circumstances.

Put first thing first:

Habit three is all about prioritization.it tells us how to effectively manage your time. To
be an effective manager of yourself, you must organize and execute around priorities.
Instead of trying to fit all the things of our lives into the time allotted, as many time
management plans do, our focus here is on enhancing relationships and achieving
results. We should have a sense of distinguishing between urgent and important.
People get “harried” away from their real goals and values by subordinating the
important to the urgent.

Seek to understand then to be understood:

Most important word to know in mastering this habit is “listen. - but not with intent to
reply, to convince, to manipulate. Listen simply to understand, to see how the other
party sees things.to work productively with someone is to emphatically listening to
them. Empathic listening can be a powerful emotional deposit in itself, because it
provides the speaker with psychological air. When that need is met, you can work on
your agreement in an atmosphere of trust.

Think win/win:

Integrity, maturity and abundance mentality are the important aspect of this habit.
Integrity - We define integrity as the value we place on ourselves: We need to be self-
aware, possessed of an independent will. We make and keep meaningful promises
and commitments to ourselves and others. Maturity - This is the balance between
courage and consideration. Simply put, you must have enough empathy and goodwill
to work for a win for your counterpart, and enough courage to make a win for yourself.
Abundance Mentality - You must know and believe that there is plenty out there for
everybody. Many people don’t: They think that to succeed themselves, others must
fail. They harbor secret hopes that other people must suffer misfortune - not terrible
misfortune, but acceptable misfortune that Will keep them in their place. The
Abundance Mentality recognizes that possibilities for growth and success are
potentially limitless, and sees in others the opportunity to complement its own
strengths.

Synergize:
The idea of synergizing is that the whole of a well-functioning team is greater than the
mere sum of its part. the exercise of all the other habits prepares us for the habit of
synergy. Properly understood, synergy is the highest activity of life. Through it, we create
new, untapped alternatives - things that didn’t yet exist. We unleash people’s greatest
powers. We make a whole greater than the sum of its parts. The basis of synergy is that
two people can disagree, and both can be right Learn to embrace differences as a
strength instead. Synergy also entails “flow” and perfect group automation as if the group
was functioning as one. That’s when you achieve top results. Experiencing real synergy
never left a person same again. The device that opens us to synergy’s power depends
on all the habits of effectiveness at once, requiring confidence, integrity, and empathy.

Sharpen the saw:

Sharpening the saw means to renewing ourselves physically, mentally, socially and
spiritually. No habits in the world will take you far unless you preserve, take care and keep
improving on yourself.. To exercise in all these necessary dimensions, we must be
proactive. . it’s important that you should commit some time for each one dimension.
Taking care of your spiritual dimension renews your core, your center, your commitment
to all your principles. People do this in a variety of ways. Some meditate on the scriptures.
Others immerse themselves in great literature or music, or commune with nature.

The language used in the book is very easy to understand there are no such terms used
which are unable to be understood.

assumptions does the author seem to share with his/her audience? Provide specific
examples of these?

Author has used illustrations and assumptions in the whole writing to make it able to be
understood by the readers. Like to make the second habit clearer he used the example
of the construction of a home that we create it in every detail before we ever hammer the
first nail into place. We try to get a very clear sense of what kind of house we want. If we
want a family-centered home, we plan to put a family room where it would be a natural
gathering place .we plan sliding doors and a patio for. we work with ideas. we work with
our mind until we get a clear image of what we want to build. Each day we go to the
construction shed and pull out the blueprint to get marching orders for the day. We begin
with the end in mind.

To make the understanding of third habit put first thing first author has used the example
of his wife that Some time ago, his wife was invited to serve as chairman of a committee
in a community endeavor. She had a number of truly important things she was trying to
work on, and she really didn't want to do it. But she felt pressured into it and finally agreed.
Then she called one of her dear friends to ask if she would serve on her committee. Her
friend listened for a long time and then said, "Sandra, that sounds like a wonderful project,
a really worthy undertaking. I appreciate so much your inviting me to be a part of it. I feel
honored by it. For a number of reasons, I won't be participating myself, but I want you to
know how much I appreciate your invitation." Sandra was ready for anything but a
pleasant "no." She turned to me and sighed, "I wish I'd said that."

The writer has emphasized upon the following points for the readers to ponder upon after
reading this habit :

1. One should have a clear idea of their goals .

2. One should learn about maxing out the value of their time.
3. Every great achievement in recorded history took forethought and planning to
achieve. So, before you can ever hope to make something a reality– or, at the very
least, as you go– you must first create a clear and thorough plan for doing just that.
4. Craft a vision of whatever you want to do.
