1) Find the inverse of reduced global stiffness matrix after applying fixed BC at 1st node for
the series of (𝑛 − 1) spring elements with stiffness’s 𝑘 , 𝑘 , 𝑘 , … , 𝑘 .
Ans:
1 1 1 1

⎢𝑘 𝑘 𝑘 𝑘 ⎥
⎢1 1 1 1 1 1 1 ⎥

2) For the discrete 1-D structure made of 3 spring elements of different stiffness’s
(𝑘 , 𝑘 , 𝑘 ), fixed at both the ends, find the inter-relationship among global forces 𝐹 , 𝐹
and 𝐹 applied at their nodes such that the right support (𝐹 ) is useless i.e. no reaction is
developed there.
Ans: + =0 and 𝐹 +𝐹 +𝐹 =0
3) Two trolleys are connected by the arrangement of springs, as shown in Figure 3, with the
external forces 𝑃 and 𝑃 acting on the trolleys in different directions.
(a) Form the global set of FE linear equations for the system in the form [K]{U} = {F}.
(b) Find the displacement of each trolley and the force in each spring.
Hints: (i) Each trolley can be considered as one node although many springs are
connected to it. Bigger trolley is Node 2 and smaller one is Node 3.
(ii) Assume that the trolleys are rigid, thus all the ends of springs connected to a
trolley have same displacement. However, the internal forces developed in the springs
connected to same trolley can be different.
Figure 3
𝑘 −𝑘 0 0 𝑈 𝐹
−𝑘 5𝑘 −2𝑘 −2𝑘 𝑈 −𝑃
Ans: (a) =
0 −2𝑘 3𝑘 −𝑘 𝑈 𝑃
0 −2𝑘 −𝑘 3𝑘 𝑈 𝐹
𝑈 −3𝑃 + 2𝑃
(b) = and the internal forces in each spring are:
𝑈 −2𝑃 + 5𝑃
𝑓 3𝑃 − 2𝑃
Left-most spring: = ,
𝑓 −3𝑃 + 2𝑃
𝑓 −𝑃 − 3𝑃
Spring connecting the two trolleys: = ,
𝑓 𝑃 + 3𝑃
𝑓 −2𝑃 + 5𝑃
Spring connecting smaller trolley with right fixed end: = ,
𝑓 2𝑃 − 5𝑃
𝑓 −3𝑃 + 2𝑃
Spring connecting bigger trolley with right fixed end: =
𝑓 3𝑃 − 2𝑃
for all of which local node 1 is taken as left one and local node 2 is taken as right one.
And 𝑓 determines the sign of the internal force in all the springs, thus determines
tension/compression member.
4) A steel rod subjected to an end load is modeled by two bar elements as shown in Figure 4.
Determine the nodal displacements and the axial stress in each element.

Ans: = and 24 MPa
