TEXT1
Please All and You Will Please None
Aman and his son were once going with their donkey to a market. As they were walking
along, a countryman passed them and said : "You fools, what is a donkey for but to ride
upon ?"
So the man put the boy on the donkey and they went on their way. But soon they
passed a group of men, one of whom said : "See that lazy youngster, he lets his father
walk while he rides."
So the man had his boy get off, and got on himself. But they hadn't gone far when they
passed two women, one off whom said to the other : "Shame on that lazy lout to make
his poor little son trudge along."
The man didn't know what to do,-but at last he took his boy up before him on the
donkey. By this time they had come to the town and the passers-by began to jeer and
point at them. The man stopped and asked what they were scoffing at. The
men said •: "Aren't you ashamed of yourself for overloading that poor donkey of yours-
you and your hulking son ?"
The man and boy got off and tried to think what to do. They thought and they thought, till
at last they cut down a pole, tied the donkey's feet to it, and raised the pole and the
donkey to their shoulders. They went along amid the laughter of all who met them till
they came to market bridge, when the donkey, getting one of his feet loose, kicked out
and caused the boy to drop his end of the pole, in the struggle the donkey fell over the
bridge, and so did the man and the boy.
Finally an old man who had followed them said. "That will teach you: Please a/I, and
you will please none."

TEXT 2
How Planes Fly
All planes need air pressure under their wings to stay up in the air. As they move
forward, the higher air pressure underneath their wings pushes them upward and
gives them lift. •
The smooth, streamlined shape of the plane allows air to flow easily over its surface.
This helps to reduce the drag caused by the air pushing against the plane and
allows it to move rapidly through the air.
Planes move forward using engines. This movement is called thrust. Moving forward
keeps a stream of moving air passing over the wings, which allows the plane to stay
up in the air. If the engines fail, the plane will begin to descend very quickly.
Air above the wing moves faster, so it is at a lower pressure than the air under the
wing. Air under the wing moves more slowly and is slightly squashed, so it is at a
higher pressure than the air above the wing.

Should Mobile Phones be Banned-in School ?
In the last few years there has been an explosion in the use of new communications
technologies, including mobile phones; it is estimated that over 70% of young
people aged 10-14 now own one. Considerable debate has taken place in the press
recently as to whether pupils should be allowed to take their mobile phones into
school.
b ing. 12. sma. clp
No one can deny the positive benefits of children communicating freely with each other,
and the pupil argue that using a mobile phone to talk to or text message their friends is
simply one way of doing this, using new technology. Many parents are in favor too, and
like the reassurance of knowing their child can be safer and more independent if they
have a mobile phone, since they can -contact them at any time if necessary They cite
potential risks faced by some children traveling alone
However, schoolspoint out that carrying a mobile phone could in itself make a child more
vulnerable to theft or mugging , both on the street and even in the playground. Police
figures confirm that a high proportion of the crimes committed against young people
involve thefts of mobile phones. Schools are concerned, moreover, that allowing pupils
to bring their mobiles to school could create a competitive atmosphere among the
children and result in some children feeling left out and unvalued. In addition they claim
that pupils' education would be affected by the distraction of phones ringing in the class.
Some doctors fear the children using mobile phones could suffer longterm brain
damage. Until this is disproved, it would seem that schools might best protect their
pupils from this and other problems by making them leave their mobile phones at home.
11. What is the social function of the text ?
a. To present two different points of view about the mobile phones banning at school
b. To describe the function of the mobile phones at school

c. The parents like their children have mobile phones because they are cheap
d. The school has different point of view from other people about the use of mobile
phone
e. The doctors agree with the use of mobile phone on children

Respiration system helps the body take oxygen from the air. The most important organs
in the respiration system are nose, mouth, trachea, lungs, and diaphragm.
Respiratory system, in anatomy and physiology, are organs that deliver oxygen to the
circulatory system for transport to all body cells. Both work together to deliver oxygen to
cells and remove carbon dioxide in a two-phase process called respiration.
The first phase of respiration begins with breathing in, or inhalation. Inhalation brings air
from outside the body into the lungs. Oxygen in the air moves f/om the lungs through
blood vessels to the hearth, which pumps the oxygen-rich blood to all parts of the body.
Oxygen then moves from the bloodstream into cells, which completes the first phase of
respiration In the cells, oxygen is used in a separate energy-producing process called
cellular respiration, which produces carbon dioxide as a byproduct.
The second phase of respiration begins with the movement of carbon dioxide from the
cells to the bloodstream. The bloodstream carries carbon dioxide-laden blood to the
lungs. In the lungs, breathing out or exhalation, removes carbon dioxide from the body,
thus completing the respiration cycle.

TEXT 7
The sun can be used as a source of fuel for power plants. Such power plants are still in
the beginning stages now. It would not be too much to expect that such experimental
plants may lead the way to a wider use of solar energy to run machine.
The sun can also be used in telephone communications, in space technology, and in
farming. Solar batteries have been in experimental use for a number of years to power
telephone lines. Such batteries are now being used to re-fill batteries which power space
instruments. It is said that scientists have also succeeded in developing solar pumps
that can raise water for irrigation.
Certainly the sun's energy has many other possible uses. AN of these seem to be
very ideal. It is a pity, however, that to change the abundant sunlight into energy
remains something else. The instruments needed to catch the sun's energy are still
very expensive. For this reason, for example the solar pumps are seldom use.
However, once man succeeds in catching even a small part of the sun's energy
cheaply, no one would worry about running out of fossil fuels or atomic-energy ores.
It lies in the hands of the scientist to make this dream of the future come true.

How Photosynthesis works
Photosynthesis is a very complex process, and for the sake of convenience and
ease of understanding , plant biologists divide it into two stages.
In the first stage, the light-dependent reaction, the chloroplast traps light energy and
converts it into chemical energy contained in nicotinamide adenine dinucieotide
phosphate (NADPH) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP), two molecules used in the
second stage of photosynthesis.
In the second stage, called the light-independent reaction (formerly called the dark
reaction), NADPH provides the hydrogen atoms that help form glucose, and ATP
provides the energy for this and other reaction used to synthesize to glucose.
These two stages reflect the literal meaning of the term photosynthesis, to build with
light.
37. What is the topic of the text ?
a. What Photosynthesis is. d.
b. Why Photosynthesis occurs. e.
c. How Photosynthesis Works.
38. In the second step of photosynthesis ....
a. all reactions depend on sunlight d.

c. solar energy is created
39. What gives hydrogen atom in the process of photosynthesis ?
a. NADPH ' d. ATP
b. glucose e. light

c. Dark reaction doesnot depend on sunlight
d. NADPH gives hydrogen atoms in the form of glucose
e. ATP is molecules that is used in the dark reaction
