1) RECEPTION, STORAGE, AND RETRIEVAL. Media that aid in
production, distribution, reproduction and/or amplification also play an
important role in reception in that they serve to make messages
accessible. As noted in Table 8-2, tools such as radio and TV receivers,
magnifying glasses, radar, and telescopes, assist with the reception of
visual information, while earphones and hearing aids expand capabilities
for receiving auditory messages.
2) CULTURES ARE COMPLEX AND MULTIFACETED. The
complexities of culture are most apparent, and potentially most
problematic in terms of communication, at the level of societies. Here,
language differences are often involved, along with fundamental issues
such as political customs, family life, clothing, eating habits, class
structure, political orientations, religions, customs, economic
philosophies, beliefs, and value systems.
3) SYSTEMS. A system is any entity or whole that is composed of
interdependent elements. Systems have characteristics and capabilities
that are distinct from those of the separate parts. A simple example of a
system is a cake. The ingredients of a typical cake are sugar, flour, salt,
eggs, butter, vanilla, and baking powder and/or soda. When these are
combined and baked, the result is an entity that is much different than
any of the individual ingredients.
4) COURTSHIP AND MATING. Although differences exist in the specific
courtship and mating practices of various species, all of these involve
communication. Humans and other animals must be able to identify other
individuals of their own species and determine gender relative to

their own. Also, individuals must attract and sometimes persuade one
another, and the mating activity must be synchronized.

COMMUNICATION STYLE

Communication style can influence message-reception dynamics in

two ways: First, depending upon our habits and preferences, we may
be drawn to or may actively avoid the opportunity to deal with other
people. People who are shy or apprehensive about engaging in verbal
communication in a group setting, for example, may avoid such
circumstances whenever possible. Such an individual might prefer to

watch a television show on health or consult a home medical guide

for information. Even when a person with this style of communication
makes an effort to take part in interpersonal situations, he or she
may be uncomfortable. This discomfort may affect the way he or she
attends to, interprets, and retains information.
A less direct influence of style on information reception has to do
with the manner in which we present ourselves to others. The way we
“come across” to those with whom we interact can have a substantial
impact on the way they react to us, and this will influence both the
quality and quantity of information they make available. People who
are overly talkative, for instance, often have less verbal information
available to them than they otherwise might, because the people
with whom they converse are limited in their interest and in the time
available to speak. Our greetings, tone, word choice, level of
openness, dress, and appearance also have an impact upon the
messages other persons make available to us, and this, in turn, has a
direct bearing on our selection, interpretation, and retention.
