A Summary of “Social Media’s Positive Influence”

The article “Social Media’s Positive Influence” is written by Josh Rose, the digital

creative director of the ad agency Deutsch LA and contributor to Mashable.com. In this article,

Rose gives us some examples of the bright side of social media. Josh Rose’s article is

summarized below.

First, Rose provides an example of how social media technology impacts on human

interaction, from his personal experience. The author starts to tell how he was communicating

with his son, who lived far away from him, through an app. Rose shows us how satisfied

technology made him and by that, he argues against the argument of how dull broadcasting of

social media is. Then, Rose states an event in China which social media helped reunite a 6-year-

old who was snatched when he was 3 is discovered with a family 800 miles away and his family.

Through this, the article implies that social media is bringing people closer.

Then, Josh Rose asks whether social media make people feel closer to each other or

farther away. And to highlight the paradox of online closeness, the author quotes his friend’s

answer which states that social media helps draw us nearer but also distance us. By this

example, the article puts two seemingly conflicting realities next to each other to show a
juxtaposition between physical and digital interaction. In addition, Rose says that even mobile

devices are everywhere, he still sees people reading something on paper.

In conclusion, Josh Rose says that social media reflects our humanity. And even it’s

complex, it doesn’t get inside and ruin us, social media shows who we are. The article adds that

social media is just a tool and people should focus on how to use it properly more than how it

affects us.
