Name: Gallic Wars Gaul

Location: Earth, Real Life, 58 BCE

A land in a state of turmoil, flux, and migration, Gaul was a region located on the continent of
Europe on planet Earth. Historically home to various divided tribes and cultures that invaded,
settled, and clashed with one another, Gaul is now embroiled in a conflict that will be come to be
known as the Gallic Wars. A new wave of invaders from the neighbouring region of Germania has
caused a ripple of migration, leading to conflict. To assist his nation’s allies in the region, and for
his own wealth and glory, an elected politician and military general has led an invasion into Gaul.
The stage is set for intrigue and war, and in history one of mankind’s more renown generals
made his mark in this era. However, forces from realities adjunct in space and time have now also
arrived to face one another in a realm that to both of them is familiar and strange all at once.

Geography:

Gaul is a land bordered by the Mediterranean sea to the south and the Atlantic ocean to the
north and west, with biomes generally recognized as temperate with warm summers and cool or
cold winters. This with the exception of the alpine regions in the southwest and southeast, and
the Mediterranean region in the south. It covers an area of about 494,000 km2, and contains
many rivers with the people living along the rivers historically using them for fishing,
communication, and travel. Gaul encompasses present day France, Luxembourg, Belgium, most of
Switzerland, parts of Northern Italy, as well as the parts of the Netherlands and Germany on the
west bank of the Rhine. Gaul is estimated to have a population of 5-7 million people, divided
among the various peoples of the land.

Factions:

Romans:

An empire based in the nearby Apennine Peninsula, Rome is an empire on the ascent. At this
point Rome is still nominally a republic, and the Roman expedition is led by by a man named
Gaius Julius Caesar. Caesar is the governor of the Roman lands that border Gaul, on both sides of
the mountain range known as the Alps. Some Roman settlers, mostly military veterans, are
moving into Roman occupied lands in Gaul located primarily in the Mediterranean southwest.
However, Roman assimilation is mostly by top-down absorption of the local rulers into Roman
culture. As such, most of the people under Roman rule here are Gallic tribesmen learning to
become Roman. Rome’s allies in the region include some of the local tribes that have chosen to
side with them as leverage against rival tribes, usually ones that border Roman-occupied lands,
as well as the Greek-founded city of Massalia. Caesar is accompanied by his 6 legions and mostly
cavalry auxiliary forces, comprising about 30,000 men. Roman armies are equipped and supplied
well, with the main focus and core of the army comprised of heavy infantry. Caesar is a populist
and a man of ambition, but is also a brilliant military mind with the tools to conquer Gaul.

Historical Fun-Fact: Napoleon was Caesar’s biggest fan. The only book he ever got around to
personally writing was on Caeser.

Suebi
The invaders from Germania, the Suebi are a people migrating into Gaul. They are a tribal
confederation, led by a chieftain named Ariovistus. Ariovistus aims to bring his people from
Germania into Gaul, and was formerly recognized as “king and friend” by the Roman senate. The
Suebi and other Germanic tribes are located in the eastern part of Gaul astride the Rhine river,
and are migrating in force. They mostly keep their Germanic way of life and culture, making some
concessions primarily in the area of language. The Suebi don’t really seem to have allies in the
region as they have underlings forced under their boots, primarily the Gallic Sequani and other
local tribes that neighbour them. Ariovistus commands an army of about 15,000, grouped into
various tribes fighting mostly as spearmen capable of forming into a phalanx. Ariovistus’
characterization is not well known, but most accounts from his enemies seem to describe a
mostly able military leader with ambition but a relatively poor grasp of his actual strength.

Nervii
A Gallic people located in the north, the Belgic Nervii are described as the fiercest and most
warlike people in Gaul. They are a large and powerful tribe, led by a chieftan named Boduognatus.
Boduognatus is a chieftain leading a coalition of Belgic tribes formed as a deterrence to Roman
interference in their lands. The Nervii are located in the northeast part of Gaul, which is similar
climatically to the rest of the region. The Nervii and the rest of the Belgae are a Celtic people like
the Gauls, but Nervii in particular are renown for their ascetic warrior culture with Caesar
describing them as the “Spartans of Gaul”. The Nervii are nominally allied with the other Belgic
tribes, and are in a relatively solid tribal coalition. Boduognatus commands an army of around
30,000, fighting in the Celtic style primarily as spearmen with some horsemen. Boduognatus does
not have much in the way of historical characterization, but was a fierce and cunning enough foe
to earn the respect of his adversaries.

Arverni:

The Gallic tribe in the centre of Gaul, the Arverni are among the most powerful tribes in the
region. They are ruled by a king and chieftain by the name of Celtillus, and have historically been
the most powerful tribal hegemon in the area. The Arverni are almost dead centre of Gaul, and
are known for their ability to forge alliances and coalitions with the rest of the Celtic tribes of
Gaul to unify them. They have strong connections with virtually every Celtic Gallic tribe, and can
usually call on them to form large tribal confederations. The son of Celtillus, a man named
Vercingetorix, has aims of forming one such group to oppose Rome. The Averni can muster a
force of 70,000 from their own ranks and the ranks of their fellows, fighting in the Celtic style
primarily as spearmen with some renown horsemen. Not much is known of Celtillus other than
his attempt to consolidate the Celtic kingship, but his son is a proud and ambitious man that is
still willing to give everything for his people.

Gaul is on the cusp of a region-wide war, so it is politically volatile. However, the humans here
are real world humans and there is no magic whatsoever. There are moving armies and wild
animals, but on a curve this place should not pose much of a hindrance to the armies that are to
be relocated here.
