1.A Plat form of weight 20KN is being supported by four equal columns, which are clamped to
the foundation as well as to the platform. Experimentally it has been determined that a static
force of 5 KN applied horizontally to the platform produces a displacement of 0.25cm. It is
estimated that damping in the structure is of the order of 5% of the critical damping.
Determine the following, a)Un damped natural frequency, b)Absolute damping coefficient,
c) Logarithmic decrement and d) The number of cycles and the time required for the
amplitude of motion to be reduced from an initial value of 0.25cm to 0.025cm.
2.A free vibration test is conducted on an empty elevated water tank. A cable attached to the
tank applies a lateral horizontal force of 73KN and pulls the tank horizontally by 50mm. The
cable is suddenly cut and the resulting free vibration is recorded. At the end of four complete
cycles, the time is 2 sec and the amplitude is 25mm. Compute the following a) Damping
ratio, b) Natural period of un damped vibration c) Stiffness d) Weight e) Damping coefficient
and f) Nos of cycles required for the displacement amplitude to decrease to 5mm.
3.a) List the essential difference between static problem and dynamic problem. (4)
4. a) Explain ‘D’ Alembert’s principle. What is its significance in formulating the equation of
motion? (6)
b) A machine having a mass of 250Kg is supported by springs of total stiffness
K=21.5KN/m.Assume that the damping ratio is 0.15. The machine incorporates a piston whose

mass is 5Kg and it has a stroke of 200mm. For operation at 1500 rpm, determine the dynamic
amplitude of the machine. (10)
5. Derive the equation of motion for damped free vibration of a SDOF system and explain the
phenomenon of over damping, critical damping and under damping.
6. A Steel beam simply supported has a span of 50cm. The cross section is rectangular 50mm
wide
and 5mm depth. This is connected at mid span by means of a spring having a stiffness of
50Kg/cm and a load of 150Kg is applied at the other end of a spring. Determine the natural
frequency of the system. Take E=2x Kg/ and g= 980cm/ .
