affect the growth and rate of function of many other systems in the body. T3 and T4 are synthesized from both iodine and
tyrosine. The thyroid also produces calcitonin, which plays a role in calcium homeostasis.
The thyroid itself is regulated by another gland located in the brain, called the pituitary. In turn, the pituitary is regulated in part
by the thyroid (via a “feedback” effect of thyroid hormone on the pituitary gland) and by another gland called the hypothalamus.
Hyperthyroidism, often referred to as an overactive thyroid, is a condition in which the thyroid gland produces and secretes
excessive amounts of the free (not protein bound, and circulating in the blood) thyroid hormones, triodothyronine (T3) and/or
thyroxine (T4). This is the opposite of hypothyroidism (‘sluggish thyroid’), which is the reduced production and secretion of T3
and/or T4. Graves’ disease is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism is one cause of thyrotoxicosis—the hypermetabolic clinical syndrome which occurs when there are elevated
serum levels of T3 and/or T4. Thyrotoxicosis can also occur without hyperthyroidism. Some people develop thyrotoxicosis due to
inflammation of the thyroid gland (thyroiditis), which can lead to excessive release of thyroid hormone already stored in the
gland (without the accelerated hormone production that characterizes hyperthyroidism).
Hyperthyroidism may be asymptomatic, but when it is not, symptoms are due to an excess of thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormone
is important at a cellular level, affecting nearly every type of tissue in the body. Thyroid hormone functions as a controller of the
pace of all of the processes in the body. This pace is called the metabolic rate..
If there is too much thyroid hormone, every function of the body tends to speed up. Therefore, some of the symptoms of
hyperthyroidism may be nervousness, irritability, increased perspiration, heart racing, hand tremors, anxiety, difficulty sleeping,
thinning of the skin, fine bri le hair, and muscular weakness—especially in the upper arms and thighs. More frequent bowel

movements may occur, but diarrhea is uncommon. Weight loss, sometimes significant, may occur despite a good appetite (though
10% of people with a hyperactive thyroid experience weight gain), vomiting may occur, and, for women, menstrual flow may
lighten and menstrual periods may occur less often.
Thyroid hormone is critical to normal function of cells. In excess, it both overstimulates metabolism and exacerbates the effect of
the sympathetic nervous system [the one that controls the fight or flight responses], causing “speeding up” of various body
systems and symptoms resembling an overdose of adrenaline. These include fast heart beat and symptoms of palpitations,
nervous system tremor such as of the hands and anxiety symptoms, digestive system hypermotility, unintended weight loss, and
(in “lipid panel” blood tests) a lower and sometimes unusually low serum cholesterol…
Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disease. It most commonly affects the thyroid, frequently causing it to enlarge to twice its size
or more (goiter), become overactive, with related hyperthyroid symptoms such as increased heartbeat, muscle weakness,
disturbed sleep, and irritability. It can also affect the eyes, causing bulging eyes. It affects other systems of the body, including the
skin, heart, circulation and nervous system. …Grave’s disease sometimes appears after childbirth, and has a female:male
incidence of 5:1 to 10:… The trigger for auto-antibody production is not known. There appears to be a genetic predisposition for
Graves’ disease, suggesting that some people are more prone than others to develop TSH receptor activating antibodies due to a
genetic cause. Since Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disease which appears suddenly, often quite late in life
Thyroid increases the risk of obesity and heart diseases, depression, anxiety, hair loss, and certain sexual problems. If
undiagnosed, it affects patient’s life severely and that too without patient even realizing that the Thyroid is actually the root cause
of many problems in his life.
Hypothyroidism underactive thyroid is a state in which the thyroid gland does not produce a sufficient amount of the thyroid
hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
Iodine deficiency is often cited as the most common cause of hypothyroidism worldwide…Iodine deficiency is the most common
cause of hypothyroidism worldwide. In iodine-replete [high in available iodine] areas of the world, hypothyroidism is most
commonly caused by Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, or otherwise as a result of either an absent thyroid gland or a deficiency in
stimulating hormones from the hypothalamus or pituitary… And,
Hashimoto thyroiditis is part of the spectrum of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) and is characterized by the destruction of
thyroid cells by various cell- and antibody-mediated immune processes.
This condition is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States in individuals older than 6 years.

Hypothyroidism usually has an insidious onset, with signs and symptoms slowly progressing over months to years. Thus, the
presentation of patients with hypothyroidism may be subclinical, may be asymptomatic, and may be found from routine
screening of thyroid function.
Hypothyroidism can result from postpartum thyroiditis up to 9 months after giving birth, characterized by transient
hyperthyroidism followed by transient hypothyroidism… [or, in the case of some women, the hypothyroidism becomes more or
less permanent.]
The hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis plays a key role in maintaining thyroid output. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone is
released from the hypothalamus, which stimulates the production of TSH by the pituitary. TSH in turn stimulates thyroid activity.
If the hypothalamus or pituitary are damaged, then this will impair the activity of the thyroid gland…
Some of the symptoms for early-appearing hypothyroidism include thin, bri le fingernails, dry, itchy skin, weight gain and water
retention, hair loss, rapid thoughts, depressed reflexes, muscle cramps and joint pain, mood instability. irritability, constipation,
fatigue, sleeplessness, cold intolerance, decreased sweating, a slower heart rhythm, and female infertility.
Some of the symptoms for late-appearing hypothyroidism are thinning of the outer third of the eyebrow, dry puffy facial skin,
slow speech and hoarse voice, deepening of the voice, carpel tunnel syndrome, bilateral parathesia, a low basal body temperature,
hypotension, goiter, and decreased libido in men…
The important word in the all of the descriptions above about Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism and Graves’ hyperthyroidism is the
word immune.

The thyroid gland resides in your neck, and is ruled by the planet Mercury and the sign of Taurus. An afflicted Mercury (one with
many difficult aspects being made to it) can show someone who may be prone to thyroid issues. For an underactive thyroid, look
for a difficult aspect between Mercury and Saturn (Saturn’s a planet that constricts, taking energy away). For an overactive
thyroid, look for difficult aspects between Mercury and Mars or Jupiter (Mars is a planet of high energy and Jupiter a planet of
abundance, so both can increase the activity of your thyroid). Pluto is the ruler of the endocrine system overall, and aspects
between the Sun and Pluto should be especially noted.
Many of the endocrine glands are actually located in the Aries and Libra sections of the body. Afflictions related to these signs can
put the endocrine system out of balance. In addition, each of the endocrine glands and the hormone it produces is ruled by a
particular planet. The hormones are under the ruler ship of Mercury. The Pituitary gland is located in the center of our brain. There
are two parts to the Pituitary gland. The anterior or front portion is ruled by Capricorn. The posterior or rear part of it is ruled by
Cancer. Moon relates indirectly to the endocrine system, but especially hypothalamus, if the Moon is weak, it will affect the
Hypothalamus in the brain. The para thyroid gland is ruled by Mercury.Pituitary gland is ruled by Jupiter.
The thyroid gland will be depleted if Venus is afflicted in the chart. Sun’s affliction will bring laziness and lethargy. Para-thyroid
Glandis ruled by Mercury. Pharyngeal plexus controlling Thyroid and Parathyroid has to be judged from Jupiter and
Dwadasamsa. Cavernous plexus controlling Pituitary glands are to be judged from Ascendant and Venus.

They have a great and particular interest for occultists, and they may be termed in a certain sense “the seven roses” upon the Cross of the
body, for they are intimately connected with the occult development of humanity. Four of them, the Thymus Gland, the Spleen and the two
Adrenals, are connected with the personality. The Pituitary Body and the Pineal Gland are particularly correlated with the spiritual side of
our nature and the Thyroid Gland forms the link between. The astrological rule over these seven glands is as follows:
The Spleen is the entrance gate of the solar forces specialized by each human being and circulated through the body as the vital fluid,
without THE DUCTLESS GLANDS which no being can live. This organ is therefore governed by the Sun.
The two Adrenals are under the rulership of Jupiter, the great benefic, and exert a calming, quieting and soothing effect when the emotional
activities of the Moon and Mars or Saturn have destroyed the poise.
When the obstructive hand of Saturn has awakened the melancholy emotions and laid its restraint upon the heart, the Adrenals’ secretions
are carried by the blood to the heart and act as a powerful stimulant in its effort to keep up the circulation, while the Jovial optimism
struggles against the Saturnine worries or against the impulse of Mars, which stirs the desire body into turbulent emotions of anger,
rendering the muscles tense and trembling, dissipating the energy of the system; then the secretion of the Adrenals comes to the rescue,
releasing the glycogen of the liver in a more abundant measure than usual to cope with the emergency until the equipoise has been again
a ained, and similarly during whatever other stress or strain. It was the knowledge of this occult fact that prompted the ancient astrologers
to place the kidneys under the rulership of Libra, the Balance, and in order to avoid confusion of ideas we may say the kidneys themselves
play an important part in the nutrition of the body, being under the rulership of Venus, the Lady of Libra, but Jupiter governs the Adrenals,
with which we are now particularly engaged.

This astrological method shows that planets “on Angles” are more powerful than any other condition in an astrological nativity. The
meaning(s) they symbolize must express in the individual’s life and they may have differing but consistent interpretations at different or
the same stages of life.
For the purpose of reading this paper, it is necessary only to know that “an Angle” is a general term for Midheaven (MC) and Ascendant
(Asc), roughly the noon and sunrise points on each chart of 360°. And a planet is “on an Angle” when it is conjunction, square, or
opposition those points. Acceptable variation from exact—called an orb—is usually ±2°
In the Halevi model, found in the book The Anatomy of Fate: Astrology and Kabbalah (cited below) by Z’ev ben Shimon Halevi, the
pancreas was associated with the moon; the anterior pituitary, with saturn.
Halevi’s model is created by pu ing the planets in nearly astronomical order inside a diagram of the body. It starts with the sun = thymus’
ruler, then moon = pancreas’ ruler, and so on, forming a clockwise spiral in the body which culminates at the pineal body and neptune.
When a planet is a “ruler” of some part of the chart, body, or life, it has special sway over that area. Halevi’s model looks like this:

Following them is an analysis of the occurrence of mercury in Taurus—correlated according to those tables by both sign and planet with the
thyroid—in all ten charts of the individuals in this study. Here “mercury in Taurus,” of course, refers either to its conception or
birth sidereal position or one of their harmonics.
Combining Halevi’s model with planets on Angles, we have a tentative way to identity which endocrine organ might malfunction. It will be
represented by one of Halevi’s planets that will be on an Angle at birth. This part of the significator is called “the first part of the
significator.” The “might” part needs qualification. To represent a diseased endocrine organ, the chart also has to have astrological
indicators symbolizing pathology, discussed below under “the second part of the significator.”
In all of the examples below, including hyperthyroid, hypothyroid, and death from thyroid cancer, the first part of a two-part significator,
representing “thyroid” according to the Halevi model, is mercury on an Angle.
It does not ma er if the mercury is harmonic or not, nor does it have to influence a 6th house.
The chart (of 12 possible theoretically) that describes the disease will be the one (or sometimes, several) which, in addition to the mercury on
an Angle, contains the mars/neptune part of the significator–the second part.
It would be reasonable to expect that mercury would have to rule a 6th house of health, but that has proven not to be the case. It is the
mars/neptune part of the significator which must influence a 6th, either together (in the same set) or individually (in separate
sets and “summed”).
The Second Part of the Significator For Thyroid Dysfunction—Mars and Neptune
Mars symbolizes initiative, aggression, strife, cuts, tears, friction, injuries, and chemicals (the burning or corrosive aspect), among other
things.
Neptune symbolizes confusion, fantasy, creativity, openness, porosity, and also fumes and gases. Combined with mars, it produces an over-
sensitivity resulting in noxious, confused, or highly charged responses. Or, it places the individual in noxious conditions. Or, in its more
sociological interpretation as “crazy” it renders their behavior at odds relative to the standard of behavior.
When saturn joins mars and neptune as an influence, it increases their other-than-normal results. Forefront (i.e., on an Angle) in any
chart, representing physical, emotional, or psychological conditions, mars/saturn/neptune represents siege. But saturn does not produce
immune dysfunction. It just aggravates it when it occurs.
The exact form of siege conditions produced by forefront mars/saturn/neptune depend on two things: (1) the chart they are in,
and (2) the path they take, that is, the houses influenced by planets in their set.

1. Spirulina (an herb) is the best to regulate the thyroid hormone. You may find several products in the market that contains this herb.
2. Sea salt is rich in iodine. Instead of common salt, use sea salt in your diet.
3. Bladder wrack (another good source of natural iodine)is an effective herb for hypothyroidism. It increases metabolic rate and prevents
weight gain.
4. Soak few Indian plum leaves in water for a whole night. The next morning, consume the water on an empty stomach. This will help in
reducing the symptoms of the disorder.
5. Replace your vegetable oil with coconut oil. It will regulate the normal functioning of the thyroid gland.
6. Consumption of mullein is also beneficial. It lessens the inflammation of thyroid gland.
7. Abnormal estrogen level in women results in malfunctioning of thyroid gland.Black cohosh and vitex agnus castus are the two herbs for
balancing the estrogen level.
8. Due to hypothyroidism, you may suffer from dry and itchy skin. Apply oatmeal paste to your skin and after ½ hour rinse it off. Let the
skin dry for few minutes and then apply aloe-vera gel. This nuskha will help in curing itchiness and dry skin simultaneously.
9. Intake 500 gms of Withania somnifera (aswagandha) thrice a day. It helps in proper functioning of the thyroid gland.
10. Consume one teaspoon of flax seeds oil on a daily basis. Besides controlling hypothyroidism, flax seeds oil also reduces cholesterol and

Eating foods to help hypothyroidism can benefit your overall good health as well. Eating them daily can help boost the health of
your thyroid and make living with hypothyroidism manageable and easier to live with.
On the other hand, there are foods you should avoid as they can worsen symptoms and the condition itself.
Many of the foods to avoid with hypothyroidism are common foods that should generally be avoided or limited as they do not
contribute to good health. These items are:
Cruciferous vegetables: Generally food items like broccoli and cabbage are recommended for healthy eating, but not if you have
hypothyroidism. This type of food can interfere with the production of thyroid hormones.
Gluten: Although commonly avoided by those with Celiac disease, gluten should also be avoided if you have hypothyroidism.
Sugary foods: With an already slower metabolism adding sugary foods will lead to greater weight gain.
Processed foods: Hypothyroidism can result in higher blood pressure, so the added salts from processed foods will only worsen
this.

Too much fiber: Fiber is good to keep us regular, but not in the case of those with hypothyroidism.
Coffee: You may have to cut back on your morning coffee. Caffeine can limit the absorption of thyroid hormone replacement
medications.
Alcohol: Alcohol can disrupt the production of thyroid hormones and reduce the body’s ability to utilize these hormones.

Yoga and ayurveda suggests the following methods which can be followed at home.
Long before medical science ever knew about the existence of thyroid glands, yogis had devised practices, which not only maintained healthy
glands and metabolism, but also were part of a system of enlightenment.
Sarvangasna (shoulder stand) is the most suitable and effective asana for the thyroid gland. An enormous pressure is placed on the gland by
this powerful posture.
As the thyroid has one of the largest blood supplies of any body organ, this pressure has dramatic effects on its function, improving
circulation and squeezing out stagnant secretions. After sarvangasana, we should perform matsyasana, and from sarvangasana we can
practice halasana.
All these practices positively result in be er health of the thyroid gland. At the same time, all these practices should be avoided in severe
thyroitoxicosis, physical debility or a goitre that is enlarged very much, where medical therapy is obviously the first line of treatment to be
given.
However, adding iodine once again to the diet is the first obvious step.
Other effective asanas include Surya Namskara, Pavamuktasana with emphasis on the head and neck exercises, yoga mudra,
Suptavajrasana and all backward bending asanas.
The most effective Pranayama for thyroid problems is Ujjayi. It acts on the throat area and its relaxing and stimulating effects are most
probably due to stimulation of ancient reflex pathways within the throat area, which are controlled by the brainstem and hypothalamus.
This practice also gives us direct access into the pranic and psychic net work, the substructure of metabolic activity. Nadi shodhana
pranayama is useful in re-balancing metabolism.

Mercury
Vitamins: Thiamine (vitamin B-l).
Since Mercury rules the nervous system, its placement in a natal chart can indicate mental a itudes, and inflexible a itudes can stress the
body. Although mental exhaustion is not normally manifested with an afflicted Mercury, the nervous system may take a severe buffeting,
perhaps resulting in nervousness, tension and the inability to relax. Such people need to control their worrying, allowing themselves to
worry only when they haven’t done everything within their powers to change the outcome. The proper a itudes are important for well-
being, and if we mishandle our emotions we can become sick.
We might also view the planet Mercury as a kind of traffic director influencing various movements within our bodies. The messenger of the
gods, it is also the messenger of the nervous system, relaying split second commands throughout the body. Furthermore, in ruling Gemini,
Mercury has dominion over all the tubing in the body, the channels through which blood, hormones, enzymes and oxygen move. Finally,
Mercury may partially rule the hormones dispensed by the glands in the body: hormones are themselves messengers sent out to gather
certain cells together to initiate enzymic functions in the body so that the metabolism can continue on a stable course.
Mercury rules Virgo as well. Thus the planet is involved with the spli ing up action and the pancreatic breakdown of sugar into glucose—a
process that may be affected when there is insufficient thiamine because of a faulty diet or a predisposition toward too many processed foods.
A thiamine deficiency also lowers the amount of hydrochloric acid (HC1) in the stomach; in turn, the food is only semidigested so that when
the bile is poured into the duodenum (the first 11 inches of the small intestine) it cannot properly break down the fats. This malfunction
causes further problems, such as colitis, diverticulosis, flatulence, heartburn and diarrhea— many of which come under Virgo’s rulership.
Mercury is also closely associated with the thyroid, and it seems to have significance in thyroid problems with or without the influence of
Taurus, co-ruler of the thyroid. However, in thiamine-related deficiencies, the thyroid usually presents a second or third symptom and is
not a chronic indicator of a thiamine deficiency.
When transiting Mercury is retrograde, it is probably a poor time to schedule an
operation. Signals can get crossed: a woman might go in for a simple appendectomy and come out without a uterus! During Mercury
retrograde the wrong drugs might be given or the dosage may be wrong for the individual. Misunderstandings may occur between doctors,
doctor and nurses, nurses and patient or doctor and patient. Such a transit might even mean a second operation will be necessary.
Sun-Mercury
Since Mercury is never more than 28 degrees from the Sun, there are no major aspects possible, except for the conjunction.
Mercury rules Gemini; consequently, with a Sun-Mercury conjunction there can be various disorders related to the Gemini-directed tubes
of the body, such as the eustachian tubes of the ears, the bronchial tubes of the lungs, the ureters leading from the kidneys to the bladder, the
urethra leading from the bladder to the outer opening, the fallopian tubes carrying eggs from the ovaries to the uterus and the cerebrospinal
system. With an accompanying hard aspect from Saturn and one of the planets in Gemini, a deficiency of vitamin A could manifest as
bronchial asthma a acks. In addition, ear infections might occur if Saturn is in aspect and one of the planets is in Aries. Bladder infection
(cystitis) or menstrual problems are possible if Scorpio is involved. And if one of the planets is in Libra, the lower back may be helped with
https://jyotishsurfer.wordpress.com/2018/03/22/thyroid-and-astrology/ 20/40

adequate vitamin A. Since Mercury also rules Virgo, a lack of vitamin A may cause ailments associated with that sign. Virgo guides the
spli ing-up processes that take place in the intestines, liver and pancreas. A deficiency of vitamin A may create intestinal problems, such as
colitis or diverticulosis. The aging process or the slow renewal of RNA through the liver may also be caused by a lack of vitamin A. And
with the pancreatic disease diabetes vitamin A cannot be stored properly and must be replenished daily. Rashes, itching, flaking, psoriasis,
liver spots, dryness and tightness may also appear, partially caused by the nerves, ruled by Mercury.
Nerve-related problems are another possibility with the Sun in hard aspect with Mercury. If Mercury is in an air sign (Gemini, Libra or
Aquarius), the person is apt to be highstrung to begin with. This condition may be aggravated by a deficiency of thiamine (Mercury) so that
the person is easily irritable and grouchy. An individual with Mercury in a fire sign (Aries, Leo or Sagi arius) is more apt to have
inflammation of the nerve endings, such as neuritis or inflammation of the sciatica. Another disease linked to a deficiency of thiamine is
Bell’s palsy, more likely to occur if Mercury is in Aries, which rules the face, the motor centers of the brain and the circulation therein. Any
such nervous condition may be intensified by an additional hard aspect from Saturn. A deficiency of thiamine may bring on heart problems
as well, since the Sun rules that vital organ. For example, there is the possibility of cardiomegaly or bradycardia. A planet in the sign Leo or
an activated Fixed Cross in a natal chart could enhance such a possibility.
Moreover, a lack of thiamine could cause disorders of the spinal cord, coruled by the Sun and Uranus. For instance, the myelin sheaths that
cover the cord could become destroyed or partially disintegrated because of insufficient thiamine coupled with pernicious anemia.
Since Mercury co-rules the thyroid with Taurus, thyroid complications are also possible. With a hard aspect from Saturn the
thyroid may hypofunction because a lack of vitamin D (Sun) means there is not enough calcium (Saturn) available in the
system. Or with a hard aspect from Saturn the thyroid may hypofunction from lack of iodine, particularly if any of these
three planets is in Taurus or Scorpio. On the other hand, with a hard aspect to Sun-Mercury from Mars or Uranus the thyroid
may hyperfunction.
Finally, a hard aspect between the Sun and Mercury can indicate a deficiency of magnesium and accompanying illnesses. For instance, a
lack of magnesium can contribute to Virgo-related diseases, such as diarrhea or pancreatitis. With a hard aspect from Jupiter vitamin B-6
(Jupiter) may not be supplied in adequate quantities because of insufficient magnesium, creating a potential diabetic situation or leading to
celiac diseases. And if there is a hard aspect from Jupiter or Saturn and the sign Virgo is involved, there may be liver damage.
Moon-Mercury
With a hard aspect between the Moon and Mercury a person may show a propensity toward any of the diseases caused by a lack of thiamine
(Mercury). Since the Moon’s sign, Cancer, rules the digestive processes in the stomach, hydrochloric acid, which helps to break down the
food components properly, may be missing, particularly if Saturn is in Cancer in negative aspect to Mercury. A deficiency of thiamine, can
also cause gastricatony, wherein the stomach muscles become weak and flabby, contributing to poor digestion. And the liver, ruled by one of
Mercury’s signs, Virgo, can suffer from insufficient thiamine. The liver may not be able to produce the coenzymes necessary in the
https://jyotishsurfer.wordpress.com/2018/03/22/thyroid-and-astrology/ 21/40

carbohydrate metabolism, a problem that might result in hypoglycemia if Jupiter and/or Saturn is also in the picture.
Since the Moon rules potassium and Virgo guides the small intestine, there is a
possibility of tendencies toward constipation because of a lack of the mineral.
Mercury-Venus
Since Mercury and Venus can never be more than 76 degrees apart in orbit, there are no possible negative aspects between the two planets;
however, the semi-sextile (30 degrees) and the semi-square (45 degrees) may furnish potential irritation if Venus is likewise afflicted by any
of the outer planets— Saturn, Uranus, Neptune or Pluto. There is speculation that a semi-square can bring about an imbalance of niacin
and thiamine, ruled by Venus and Mercury respectively—an imbalance that can contribute to ailments such as a malfunctioning thyroid.
With Venus ruling both Taurus and Libra the deficiency of thiamine may result from a love of sweets and other carbohydrates.
With a hard aspect between Mercury and Venus and an accompanying hard aspect from Saturn potential problems with the Gemini-ruled
tubes of the body may occur. For example, the tubes may become less elastic and flexible, indicating a potential loss of copper (Venus) and
vitamin C (Saturn). Or there may be problems with the capillaries.
Because Mercury rules Virgo as well as Gemini, an aspect between Mercury and Venus may produce Virgo-related ailments. Intestinal
disorders, such as sprue and celiac diseases, may occur because of insufficient copper. A lack of vitamin E (Venus) can produce pancreatic
disturbances: if Mars is also in hard aspect, there may be inflammation of the pancreas; if Saturn is in hard aspect, the gland may be
sluggish. And with Jupiter and/or Virgo implicated, there is the possibility of liver disturbances because of a deficiency of vitamin E.
The general health of the nervous system may also be affected, particularly if Mercury is in Aquarius with a hard aspect from Pluto. Such a
placement indicates possible degeneration of the myelin sheaths about the nerves. If Saturn is also in hard aspect, multiple sclerosis may
develop from lack of copper.
Mercury-Mars
Nervous disorders are definite possibilities with a hard aspect between Mercury and Mars. There may be general inflammation of the
nerves. Or since Mars rules Aries, which has domain over the face, there is the potential for Bell’s palsy. Nerve transmission may be faulty,
too, causing unexplained tenseness because of a deficiency of phosphorus (Mars). And the central nervous system may become impaired,
possibly resulting in a shuffling gait, slurred speech pa erns and eventual paralysis—all connected with a deficiency of vitamin B-12
(Mars). There is speculation that as well as general nervous tension epilepsy may result from a hard aspect between Mercury and Mars
because of an imbalance of sodium (Mars) affecting the central nervous system. And Mars in Virgo in poor aspect with Mercury may incite
a case of nerves that will probably be helped by adequate dosages of thiamine (Mercury).
In fact, a deficiency of thiamine is highly likely with a hard aspect between these two planets, especially since Mars regulates how we burn
our energy and how we exert ourselves mentally and physically. Mars in a fire or air sign will tend to induce a deficiency of thiamine more
readily than if the planet is found in water or earth signs: Mars in Cancer in hard aspect to Mercury may even infer that supplemental
thiamine should be avoided because of too much hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Another possibility is that too li le thiamine is
assimilated from lack of sufficient phosphorus.
Intestinal disturbances may also occur. A hard aspect between Mercury and Mars may mean a deficiency of folic acid (Mars). Without
enough of this important vitamin diseases such as diarrhea, diver-ticulosis or sprue could possibly manifest. Diarrhea could occur from a
lack of fats in the digestive process as well. And since Mars rules chlorine, colitis caused by too much intake of chlorinated water and the

9/7/2019 Thyroid Disorder in Medical Astrology – Jyotish Surfer
eventual destruction of flora bacteria in the intestinal tract could also develop. Other Virgo-related problems possible with a hard aspect
between Mercury and Mars are liver dysfunction from a lack of natural chlorine in the body for maintenance of the organ, especially with
an additional hard aspect from Jupiter; and pancreatitis or impairment of the pancreatic functions with a hard aspect from Saturn.
An accompanying hard aspect from Saturn can also indicate that the tubes of the body will be blocked: i.e., cholesterol deposits may build up
in the bile duct, kidney tubules, etc., if fa y acids (Mars) are missing.
Mercury-Jupiter
A hard aspect between Mercury and Jupiter can point to a moderate deficiency of
thiamine. If a hard aspect from Saturn is present as well, this deficiency may be caused from a lack of manganese (Jupiter). A lack of
vitamin B-6 (Jupiter) can also prevent thiamine from being assimilated properly, causing symptoms, of a thiamine deficiency. Since Jupiter
rules Sagi arius, which holds sway over the thigh and sciatica nerve, there may be inflammation of that area without adequate thiamine.
Lack of vitamin B-6 can cause a variety of ailments. For example, since Mercury rules Virgo, diseases such as diabetes, hypoglycemia or
pancreatitis may occur when vitamin B-6 is in short supply over a long period. Vitamin B-6 is also known to keep the central nervous
system healthy: lack of the vitamin can induce nervousness, a well-known disorder of Mercury. And it is speculated that with Jupiter in
Gemini clogging of the arteries could occur from lack of vitamin B-6, causing atherosclerosis. Since Gemini rules the lungs as well as the
bronchi and bronchial tubes, respiratory ailments, indicating a deficiency of pangamic acid (Jupiter), are possible with a hard aspect
between Mercury and Jupiter. Especially if Saturn is in Gemini, bronchial asthma may occur. Emphysema is also possible with Jupiter in
Gemini and an accompanying hard aspect from Neptune—a configuration that that indicates a weakening in that area of the body from
distension of the sacs with excess air. With a hard aspect from Saturn and a lack of pangamic acid angina can result, showing constriction
that could bring on possible suffocation.
There may also be diseases of the pancreas (Virgo). A potential deficiency of zinc
(Jupiter), for example, could manifest a diabetic condition. With a hard aspect from Saturn there could be insufficient manganese to control
glucose levels. A lack of chromium (Jupiter) could also affect the glucose process. In addition, there is some speculation that insufficient
inositol (Jupiter) can contribute to diabetes. And there is the possibility that biotin (Jupiter) is not being unbound for assimilation, thus
affecting the spli ing-up process of the pancreas as well as the liver and the intestine: the glands located in the pancreas (the isles of
Langerhans) are co-ruled by Jupiter, Cancer and Virgo, so that glucose and insulin production may be affected, pointing a
potentially higher need of biotin to keep insulin levels normalized in diabetic cases.
Nerve disorders are other possibilities with a hard aspect between Mercury and Jupiter. Some impairment of the central nervous system has
been noted with a lack of biotin. And if either planet is in Virgo, with a hard aspect from Uranus, nerve degeneration or “faulty wiring” is
indicated—a condition that can be helped with manganese.
Furthermore, the thyroid, coruled by Mercury and Taurus, may be adversely affected when Mercury is in hard aspect with
Jupiter. There is speculation that with an accompanying hard aspect from Saturn too li le cholin (Jupiter) could halt
production of tyrosine so that thyroxine would not be available—a condition that could trigger hypo-thyroidism. If Jupiter is
also sextile or trine Pluto, too much manganese may se le in the thyroid. And with a hard aspect from Neptune estrogen
supplements may be responsible for lowering the basal metabolism of the thyroid.
Finally, an additional hard aspect from Saturn, indicating a deficiency of chromium, could point to liver disorders.
Mercury-Saturn
https://jyotishsurfer.wordpress.com/2018/03/22/thyroid-and-astrology/ 23/40
9/7/2019 y Thyroid Disorder in Medical Astrology – Jyotish Surfer
With Mercury ruling Virgo a hard aspect between Mercury and Saturn may cause
intestinal disorders. Virgo rules the intestinal tract and everything concerned with it, including the growth of healthy bacterial flora. There
is speculation that Mercury in hard aspect to Saturn can indicate a lack of flora, which, in turn, may cause poor synthesis of PABA and
vitamin K, both ruled by Saturn. As a result there may be such problems as diarrhea and colitis. Possible intestinal tract malabsorption
may also indicate that bioflavonoids (Saturn) are not being utilized properly, creating further complications with the capillaries. Moreover,
with an additional aspect from Neptune or with Mars in Cancer, Pisces or Virgo, as well as involved in the configuration, there may be
poor assimilation of thiamine, producing duodenal ulcers.
Other ailments may result from a probable lack of thiamine. For example, poor bone growth in infants can be a ributed to a deficiency of
thiamine. Skin disorders, such as herpes and its various manifestations (simplex, zoster and zoster ophthalmicus), may also occur. The teeth
are affected by the amount of thiamine in the body, too, and not enough thiamine can aggravate the pain and discomfort before and after
dental surgery. Finally, insufficient thiamine may inhibit the functions of sulfur (Saturn). Especially if the sign Taurus is involved, the
thyroid gland may be interfering with the sulfur uptake, since thyroxine is necessary for the mineral to be used successfully. With a
deficiency of sulfur the insulin functions of the pancreas may be malfunctioning.
A hard aspect between Mercury and Saturn may also cause a lack of calcium (Saturn). If one of the planets is in Taurus and
especially if Saturn is retrograde in Taurus, the thyroid may be hypofunc-tioning, producing a deficiency of calcium and
related arthritic problems. Without enough calcium nerve ailments such as tremors, shaking, insomnia, restlessness, morbid
states of mind and depression can occur. With an accompanying hard aspect from the Sun nervousness may indicate too li le
magnesium (Sun) to work with calcium to stop tremors, restlessness or vague nervousness.
Mercury-Uranus
Since a person with this configuration will be inclined toward great nervousness anyway, care should be taken to make sure the nerves are
well supplied with all vitamins and minerals affecting the nervous system, especially thiamine. There will probably be sporadic needs for
thiamine because of sudden stress. Although Mercury is said to be a coordinator and cooperator, in negative aspect, especially with Uranus,
it can mean incoordination, spasm or twitching—all helped by thiamine. In addition, Uranus rules Aquarius, which governs the spinal
cord, and thiamine in short supply can cause potential damage to the spinal cord.
Mercury-Neptune
A deficiency of thiamine is a strong possibility with a hard aspect between Mercury and Neptune, although because of the deceptive nature
of Neptune the problem may be misdiagnosed or overlooked. For instance, since Virgo rules much of the pancreatic function, a case of
“hidden” diabetes may occur: a five-hour glucose tolerance test will determine if diabetes does indeed exist; instead, the ailment may be a
carbohydrate problem that can be straightened out with adequate dosages of thiamine to provide be er oxidation in the metabolic process.
Moreover, the antivitamin vitamin enzyme thiaminase may be at work destroying thiamine through a diet of raw fish, oysters and mussels.
Addiction to alcohol can produce an added need for the vitamin. Without adequate thiamine there may be a general weakness of the
thyroid. With Mercury ruling Virgo there may also be intestinal complaints from a lack of flora,
perhaps caused by insufficient pantothenic acid (Neptune).
The possibility of cancer of the lungs, pancreas or liver should not be discounted when Mercury is in hard aspect to elusive Neptune,
especially with an additional hard aspect from Saturn or Pluto. The sign Gemini or Virgo must also be implicated.
Mercury-Pluto
https://jyotishsurfer.wordpress.com/2018/03/22/thyroid-and-astrology/ 24/40
9/7/2019 y Thyroid Disorder in Medical Astrology – Jyotish Surfer
First and foremost, a hard aspect between Mercury and Pluto may imply either a lack of or an overabundance of thiamine, situations
probably caused by a person’s diet. Especially if Mercury is conjunct Pluto, a severe deficiency may occur, with resultant thyroid
ailments. Furthermore, since Pluto rules Scorpio, which governs the colon, the root of Fixed Cross diseases, an imbalance of thiamine could
indicate heart problems as discussed under the section about the aspects of the Sun to Mercury. The pancreas could also be involved. And
there could be a hormonal imbalance in general.
There is some speculation that a hard aspect between Mercury and Pluto provides a possible link to multiple sclerosis, since Mercury rules
the central nervous system.
Mercury in Aquarius in hard aspect with Pluto is especially suspect of creating this disease because of a deficiency of orotic acid (Pluto).
But since so li le valuable information has yet become available on orotic acid, this idea should be treated purely as hypothetical until there
is enough data to compare multiple sclerosis with other diseases that seem to be caused by deficiencies of orotic acid.
Mercury-Ascendant
When Mercury is conjunct the Ascendant, a person is apt to run on nervous energy, producing frayed nerves. He or she needs to learn to
relax and turn off the mind and its careening mental faculties. Since such an individual will probably never sit still, he or she should use a
rocking chair to be able to sit in one place and yet be in motion. Worry is a great deteriorater of health with a conjunction between Mercury
and the Ascendant, and only a itudinal change can assuage this tendency. A person with this configuration in a natal chart must be
encouraged to use his or her native acumen—without worry.
TAURUS
Bones: Cervical vertebrae.
Muscles: Sternohyoid, mastoid, trapezius, ster-nomastoids, esophagus, stylopharingaeus, splenius and complexus, longus, scalenus,
biventres cervicis and spinales cervicis.
Arteries: External carotids and basilar artery.
Veins: Occipitals, jugulars and veins of the thyroid gland.
Cell Salt: Natrum sulphuricum.
Taurus rules the adenoids, tonsils and larynx; its main function, however, is corulership with Mercury of the thyroid gland.
This gland frequently malfunctions because of severe emotional stress, a lack of sufficient iodine in the diet or a diet that is
lacking in fiber and roughage. Very often, by reflex action to Taurus’s opposite sign, Scorpio, the thyroid may go hyper- or
hypoactive because of colon toxemia.
Some symptoms of a hyperthyroid condition are tenseness, inability to relax, shaking, heart palpitations, weight decrease, heat intolerance,
excessive sweating and increased bowel activity.
Unfortunately, few people are aware that their thyroids are hyperactive and blame their nervous conditions on themselves or something
within their immediate environment. The mental anguish a hyperthroid can cause is great. Some people feel as if they are tiptoeing on the
boundaries of insanity. Ge ing a T-3, T-4, T-7 blood test to check out the thyroid is easy, quick and worth a person’s mental and physical
well-being.
Hypothyroid symptoms are obesity, dry skin, lackluster and bri le hair, low blood pressure, slow pulse, sluggishness of all
functions and depressed muscular activity. People with hypothyroids feel mentally dull and listless, quickly forge ing what

they just said and displaying poor memories in general. These people are sensitive to cold draughts and continually overdress
to keep warm. Constipation also tends to be a problem. The congenital form of hypothyroidism is called cretinism. In Canada all babies are
given mandatory blood tests to make sure they don’t have the disease.
Sun in Taurus
This placement may produce sore throats, nasal mucus, polyps in the throat region or on the vocal cords and diptheria.
Moon in Taurus
The Moon in Taurus can mean sore throats as well as swelling in the throat or ulcers. A person with this configuration in a natal chart is
also likely to overeat because of emotional unhappiness.
Mercury in Taurus
Hoarseness from nervousness or talking at length, croup, difficulty in swallowing at times, choking on objects and laryngitis are all
potential ailments with Mercury in Taurus.
Venus in Taurus
This configuration can indicate swelling in the neck, mumps, thrush or fungus infection of the mouth or throat and abscesses in the
pharynx region.
Mars in Taurus
Mars in Taurus may create a hyperthyroid condition, laryngitis, enlarged tonsils,
tonsillitis, polyps in the throat area, adenoid problems and inflammation of the nasal passages.
Jupiter in Taurus
Enlarged adenoids or tonsils, dry coughing spells, sore throats and an enlarged thyroid are possibilities with this placement. People
with Jupiter in Taurus also tend to overeat and desire too many rich foods that put on weight.
Saturn in Taurus
This placement may cause phlegm in the throat, a dry cough, loss of voice, choking, suffocation and hypofuncton of the thyroid gland.
Uranus in Taurus
Spasm in the thyroid gland, causing it to go from normal to either hyper- or hypoactive, may result from Uranus in Taurus.
Stress, especially any sudden or unexpected shock to the system, may cause the thyroid to malfunction. Colon stasis can also
contribute to the problem. This placement may produce a sudden loss of voice or hoarseness a ributable to nervousness. And there is the
potential danger of choking or gagging on objects.
Neptune in Taurus
The thyroid may malfunction with this placement, especially during stress. There may be lethargy or loss of memory with a
hypothyroid and nervousness and heart pounding with a hyperthyroid. By reflex action to Scorpio, Neptune in Taurus can also
mean weak or slowed peristalsis of the large intestine. The result can be toxemia, and as the poisons filter back into the bloodstream,
symptoms such as headaches and skin rashes may appear. If the toxemia persists, the entire cardiovascular system may be affected.
Glaucoma and/or cataracts may also result if the person has a family history of such ailments.
Pluto in Taurus
With Pluto in Taurus there is the possibility of thyroid complications of a severe and chronic nature as well as polyps, tumors
or growths on the vocal cords, thyroid or within the neck region.

Thyroid Disorder
THYROID
Astrological Rulers – Mercury and Taurus.
Characteristics ;
Located at the base of the neck and around the trachea, the thyroid consists of two lobes on either side of the windpipe, which give the gland
an H-shaped appearance. Iodine ingested from food and taken from the intestinal tract eventually reaches the thyroid, where it is oxidized
and combined with the amino acid tyrosine to produce the hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Under the influence of the pituitary’s
TSH release these hormones are slowly secreted into the circulation as needed.
The thyroid is very important. It stimulates the oxidative reactions of most cells in the body and aids in the regulation of lipid and
carbohydrate metabolisms.
Diseases and Tests
Hyperthyroidism: Excessive secretion of thyroxine can bring on many of the following symptoms: weight loss, extreme nervousness,
tremors of the hands or body, protruding eyeballs, an elevated basal metabolism rate (BMR) and in the extreme diffused toxic goiter
(Grave’s disease). In borderline cases of hyperthyroidism there may be sudden sweating, rapid heart beating for no apparent reason
(tachycardia) and fever. In some cases insomnia also occurs.
Women are more susceptible to hyperthyroidism than men. During pregnancy the
endocrine system adjusts for the fetus. Afterward the shock of the birth throws the system out of kilter, what is known as postpartum blues.
The glands try to restabilize and normalize their functions for a woman without a baby, but that metabolic balance is frequently
never a ained. After pregnancy many women suddenly gain weight and can’t lose it. Moreover, their hair loses its natural gloss and
becomes dry and bri le, symptoms of glandular disorders.
The birth control pill can also adversely influence the endocrine system, bringing on
damage to the pancreas, sudden hypoglycemia and hyperthyroidism. Weight gain is
normal for a woman taking birth control pills, which appear to upset the balance of the thyroid gland.
There are various tests to determine hyperthyroidism, but the most common one is the T- 3, T-4, T-7 test, a simple blood test that can
determine the levels of the two hormones in the thyroid.
Hypothyroidism: This condition is usually characterized by a gain in weight and fatigue. Constipation and subnormal temperatures are
other signals. Hair may become dry and bri le; skin, excessively dry and flaky. Since the basal metabolism rate is lowered, the pulse may
slow and low blood pressure may occur. Sluggishness of all functions will eventually ensue, and muscular activity will become depressed.
Other symptoms include sensitivity to cold, inducing a person to wear more clothes, sluggish nerve reflexes and a general thickening of the
skin. The outer third of each eyebrow may become hairless.
And there can be a decrease of bone marrow and the beginning of anemia.
Hypothyroidism in an adult, if not caught and controlled in time, is called myxedema. In some cases, because of an inborn metabolic error,
the body will produce antibodies to destroy the thyroid secretions, accounting for many heretofore unexplained cases of spontaneous
myxedema.
Hypothyroidism in infants manifests as cretinism, usually caused because a mother
suffers a deficiency of iodine during pregnancy. (Other genetic factors may be involved.)
If undetected, cretinism will permanently render an infant mentally disabled and

physically handicapped within six months to a year. For that reason it is imperative that a pregnant woman known to have a hypothyroid
condition consult her doctor so that the fetus’s thyroid will not suffer because of the mother’s insufficiency. As I’ve indicated, in Canada
every infant receives a blood test a few days after birth to determine if cretinism exists.
There are different tests for determining whether or not the thyroid is slow-functioning.
The serum TSH test is one of the best. It is also helpful in differentiating between
primary and secondary hypothyroidism: a normal serum level of TSH excludes primary hypothyroidism. But if the hypothalamus is suspect
of triggering the problem in the thyroid, advance tests are indicated.
Diet
During the eighteenth century many people who lived in the midwestern states suffered from goiter, which was corrected by adding more
foods containing iodine to their diets.
Saltwater fish were also eaten to help the thyroid maintain its normal level of activity.
And it is still a good idea to include saltwater fish in the diet, especially for those people who do not live near the ocean.
Supplements such as algae, kelp tablets and Irish moss (an herb seaweed) are good for an ailing thyroid. Algae are good sources of zinc, a
mineral found in high amounts in the thyroid, as well as vitamins A and D. Thus Vi teaspoon of algae powder a day will help the gland.
Brewer’s yeast is also beneficial for the thyroid gland. Yeast contains riboflavin, niacin and thiamine, all integral in the transport of oxygen
within the cells. Iodine then works to help the hormone thyroxine step up the oxidation process.
PARATHYROID
The severe form of hypoparathyroidism is known as tetany, a nervous affection in which the muscles of the legs and arms jerk involuntarily.
It occurs most frequently among younger children or women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. With tetany there is a numbness and
tingling of the extremities, especially the hands. It can be fatal if allowed to go untreated.
The first step in determining hypoparathyroidism is to get a blood serum calcium test. A test to find out if the parathyroid hormone is the
root of the problem has still not been perfected.
Diet
A diet high in calcium, vitamin D and magnesium is best for the parathyroid. Without adequate vitamin D calcium is not absorbed
properly, and magnesium plays an important part in the release of parathormone. It is not wise, however, to use milk as a source of calcium:
adults do not need milk, which only creates pockets of mucus in the body that eventually slow down the internal absorption processes. In
fact, any dairy product should be taken in moderation, since they all are mucous-producing. Supplements of calcium gluconate or dolomite
tablets with vitamin D (fish liver oil only) will do the job instead.
The diet should perhaps also be low in phosphorus. With hypoparathyroidism phosphorus levels increase. Furthermore, Americans
generally consume large amounts of foods very high in phosphorus. But of course, anyone contemplating a phosphorus-free diet should first
consult a physician.
Several herbs are good for the parathyroid. Springtime horsetail is 50 per cent silica and excellent for rebuilding bri le or calcium-robbed
bones. Other herbs with high calcium contents are lamb’s-quarters, mallow, mint and field mustard. Dandelions, soybeans, watercress and
filberts (hazelnuts) are also rich in calcium.

Neck Region
First of all, and very important, the seven cervical vertebrae of the spinal column are contained in the neck region. C7 is the ‘bump’ you feel
at the top of your shoulders and between them. So often, when people get injured, it is C7 or one of the above vertebrae that crack and then
put pressure on the spinal column, causing breathing problems. When “Superman” (Christopher Reeve) got throw over the head of his
horse that balked at a jump, he cracked one of them. The result was that he needed to be on a breathing device. Other wise, he’d have died of
lack of oxygen and suffocation.
Some Taurus people complain of ‘stiff’ necks. It’s true, they are stiff necked symbolically speaking, but it can turn out to be physical, too. I
would suggest if this issue occurs, they go see either a chiropractor who can adjust their spinal column or to an osteopath. Chances are, it is
C (cervical vertebrae)-1 through C-7 that is out of joint causing this so-called stiffness.
I saw one instance where the person had a natal Mars in Taurus. He ripped nearly all the muscles on one side of his neck apart because of a
fall. This is one of those times when you literally feel like you can ‘loose your head’ and it’s truly real. The head stays atop our shoulders
because of the muscles. If enough are torn, the head can come ‘undone’ and I have read EMT literature of this actually happening. NOT a
pleasant experience.
Well, what ELSE is in the neck?! Tons of stuff! Let’s start by gently palpating the sides of our neck with your index and middle fingers. I’m
sure as a child when you were sick, the lymph glands contained within the neck (on both sides of it), were sore, swollen and sometimes hard
as a rock. There is a very gentle form of massage that can get the debris that is clogged up in the lymph within the neck to move out. This is
called ‘lymphatic massage’ and is an ideal way for Taurus people who are prone to sore throats, laryngitis and the like, to keep healthy. And
let’s be clear about the lymph glands–they are a body-wide system that ‘shadows’ the circulatory system (which is composed of arteries and
veins). The lymph is the ‘garbage collector’ for our body. This system does not have a heart like the circulatory system does. Therefore, it
relies on the contraction/relaxation of our muscles to move this debris (dead cells) out of our body and eliminate it through our urine or
bowel movements.
The Carotid arteries and jugular veins are huge and very important in ge ing blood supply to and from the brain.
https://jyotishsurfer.wordpress.com/2018/03/22/thyroid-and-astrology/ 30/40
9/7/2019 Thyroid Disorder in Medical Astrology – Jyotish Surfer
They too are very near the surface of our body and pass through our neck region. The carotid arteries may become implicated in plaque
buildup over decades. (The carotid artery is located on BOTH sides of your neck). If this occurs, then less blood is ge ing to the brain and
the person may be misdiagnosed as ‘senile’ or having Alzheimer’s Disease. Dizziness, memory loss, forgetfulness, confusion, lack of balance,
can all be symptoms of plaque buildup in the carotid arteries, particularly the left one. It’s an easy thing to check. Just go to your health care
provider and have them place the stethoscope against each artery–they can hear the ‘whooshing’ sound that occurs because of the narrowing
due to plaque. A painless ultrasound can then take ‘pictures’ of the the arteries and if there is plaque in them they can tell how much and if
it is causing other symptoms in your brain.
Arteries (ruled by Jupiter) carry fresh blood and oxygen from the heart around the body. The veins (ruled by Venus) carry the deoxygenated
blood and the toxins back through the lungs to be discharged via the breath and then they move on to pick up a new load of oxygen
molecules from the lungs and it is then pumped back into the heart, to start the circulation trip all over again. The carotid arteries take fresh
blood with a full load of oxygen on board, into the brain. The jugular, the large veins (there are two, internal and external) in the neck,
bring the deoxygenated blood and toxins out of the brain and back into the lungs for reoxygenation. These major circulation points in the
https://jyotishsurfer.wordpress.com/2018/03/22/thyroid-and-astrology/ 31/40

neck cannot be discounted and are far more crucial than most people realize.
One of the most important items in the neck are two endocrine glands. The first, the thyroid, sits in the center of the the neck just below the
pharynx. It has a right and left lobe to it (reminds me of a pair of wings that are open on either side of the windpipe/trachea). Medically the
Thyroid has a superior, middle and inferior position within the neck. All you have to know is that it sits on either side of the wind pipe.
Four pea-like round glands, two on each side of the thyroid ‘flaps’ are the parathyroid glands. This gland sits about C6 (cervical vertebrae
number 6) of the cervical vertebrae of our neck. C7 (cervical vertebrae number 7) is the ‘bump’ between our shoulder blades where the spinal
column meets our shoulder area.
Here is a detailed look at the Thyroid Gland and the a ending anatomy around it.
https://jyotishsurfer.wordpress.com/2018/03/22/thyroid-and-astrology/ 32/40
9/7/2019 Thyroid Disorder in Medical Astrology – Jyotish Surfer
This brings up the assignment of the spinal column or ‘back’ as we know it. The Cervical vertebrae are under Taurus rulership. The
Thoracic (called the T vertebrae) from below C7, is ruled by Leo. These are the ‘middle’ of the body of the back. The lumbar are ruled by
Scorpio. In GENERAL, the back is ruled by Leo (with a polarity to Aquarius). The breakdown of it, however, is important to medical
astrology and being able to talk to your client about possibilities when back problems could arise based upon certain zodiac signs.
The thyroid keeps our metabolism burning by increasing oxygen consumption in practically all tissues of our body. Oxygen is the fuel for
metabolic activity and the hormone, Thyroxin, maintains the metabolic rate. Thyroxin is made by the thyroid and cannot be overlooked. It is
involved in growth, development, proper nervous activity as well as metabolizing carbohydrates and fats. If it goes hypo (slow or what is
known as hypothyroid) then we gain weight for ‘no reason.’ Symptoms of an insufficiency can be lethargy, tiredness (all the time, but worse
in the afternoon), forgetfulness, mental “dullness” and at its worse, “cretinism.” Cretinism is found in babies and it is often misdiagnosed
as mental retardation–but it isn’t. Without adequate thyroid hormones, this mental symptom appear in them or, indeed, an adult. In its
worst form, dwarfism occurs. There can also be the skin turning a yellow color and the voice changes plus the accumulation of mucous
materials in the skin an fascia gives the person a “puffy” appearance. All signs of hypothyroidism.
If it goes hyper (too fast) it is called a hyperthyroid. These people are usually skinny, extremely nervousness, restless (they can’t sit still),
terrors (this can mean crazy thoughts they wouldn’t be thinking under normal circumstances but come to them during the waking hours or
in sleep, pronounced anxiety), protruding eyeballs and an enlarged thyroid or ‘goiter.’ And, they cannot gain weight.
It is essential that the Thyroid gland be tested not only at its hormonal source, the Pituitary gland (it is called a TSH blood test) to ensure
that the ‘master gland’ up in the middle of the brain is sending out the right signals to the ‘target gland,’ the thyroid or not. Two blood
tests, the T3 and T4 evaluate the thyroid’s ability to receive the T3 and convert it into T4 for use throughout the body. If you suspect either
a hypo or hyperthyroid, get the client to a medical doctor for evaluation and testing. ALL women who have had a baby, should be tested. I’ve
found around age 35-40, they may get a hypothyroid that is considered “borderline low.”
If this is the case, find a physician who will give you a thyroid supplement. Many will not if it is ‘borderline’ but that, in my opinion, is as
good as a hypothyroid. Many women going through menopause also have their thyroid slow down and move into the ‘borderline’ area, too.
The parathyroid consists of four round, pea sized glands. There are two embedded in each flap of the thyroid. Two are on the left side of it
and two are located on the right side of it. This gland ensures we get the calcium that is derived from the foods we eat. And then the calcium
is distributed around the body and bones in a balanced way thanks to this unsung and hard working gland. In more medicalese terms, it
maintains proper calcium ion levels in our blood and tissues by stimulating disintegration and resorption of bone tissue. Also, normal bone
and cardiac muscle activity, as well as blood clo ing depend upon normal calcium levels in the plasma.
Insufficient parathyroid function causes “tetany” (stiffness, cramps, spasms and convulsions) due to muscle instability brought on by
reduced available calcium in the bloodstream. Overactivity is associated with kidney disease (deposits of calcium which forms stones in one
or both organs). And, bone disease (demineralization and resorption) and excessive calcium levels in the blood (symptom is muscular
weakness) may also occur. If the parathyroid goes out of order, there can be leaching of calcium from the bones and it will make them bri le.
Then, the person is diagnosed with osteoporosis. A physician who is not watchful and fails to test the Parathyroid gland is doing a huge
disservice to the person. Insist upon testing of this gland in any bri le bone disease. A simple blood test can evaluate if this gland is out of
order or not.
Most think that the ‘voice box’, the larynx and throat, are ruled by Taurus, and they are. “Singer’s voice,” hoarseness and laryngitis, are

common complaints of a Taurus individual. And, they are prone to contracting sore throats when young to the point where it becomes a
chronic condition. Many things can occur in this area from an accident/injury to the throat. A node or nodule on the vocal cords. Stress in
this region makes hoarseness a common complaint for some Taureans. Speaker’s laryngitis also is common from people who talk for a living
(pastors, teachers, sales people, ect.).
The tonsils are located at the rear of the throat and ruled by Taurus, too. Many children in the 1920’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s routinely had
their tonsils removed by medical doctors because it was in ‘vogue.’ By doing so, doctors thought that the tonsils were an extraneous and
useless piece of our anatomy and that by surgically removing them, we children would be less prone to childhood diseases. Wrong.
Nowadays, children’s tonsils are left in, thank goodness.
Swollen adenoids and tonsils can be an issue for a Sun in Taurus usually as an infant and up through age twelve. And sometimes, they
have to be removed. Infant and children of this sun sign always have their “cold” se le in their throat. (Aries has it se le in the sinus
cavities of the face, Gemini, into the lungs). And they may have a lot of them. The doctors thought the appendix was a useless piece of
anatomy too and they took it out without a thought. Now, they find that it is a part of our immune system support. A set of tonsils should
remain in a child and should not be removed unless there is ample reason for doing so. Sometimes, the tonsils swell so much or grow so
large they actually cut off breathing or allows less oxygen into the body, they need to come out. All ailments of a Sun in Taurus.
Some Taureans suffer from ‘post nasal drip’ (a phenomena of the sinus cavities in the face (Cancer/Moon ruled although the face in general
is Aries ruled) and they get that irritating ‘drip’ wherein they have a constant sore throat. Or, they are constantly “clearing” their throat
(called “hawking” in homeopathic world I live in). It does not START in the throat, rather the throat is the secondary destination for sinus
infections that occur in the facial region. It makes it no less an irritant. (For Gemini people it goes to their lungs).
One also needs to be aware that the ‘windpipe’ is also in the neck. The trachea can become infected with a virus or bacteria (Strep, as an
example). There can be problems in it that may be misdiagnosed.
The esophagus, our ‘food tube’ also runs down through our neck before it moves deeper inside our body and down to our stomach.
Heartburn is a usual symptom of this area and it comes up and burns and causes discomfort in the neck area. Also, esophageal erosion can
cause irritation and can, in the long term, cause a tumor or ulcer in the neck region where the esophagus is located. Acute or chronic
Gastritis can occur in the neck region.
A childhood acute ailment known as “epiglo itis” can literally kill a child if its not detected swiftly by the parent. The epiglo is is the ‘flap
over the trachea or windpipe that is located in the deep recesses at the back of our throat. It can become infected with a bacteria or virus and
suddenly swell. If it swells, it can literally shut off breathing. When a child is hyper extending their head forward and drooling, these are
signs that it is epiglo itis.
Taureans are well known to be the gourmands of the zodiac. They are inclined to rich sauces, high bu er and fat consumption, plenty of
desserts which gets them into digestion related symptoms. That and a weight gain. Many Taurean’s are built like the proverbial ‘box car’
and ‘no neck’–just a head se ing on a pair of shoulders, particularly the male. Weight issues are relevant for this sign at ANY age and its
called eating without sauces and slowing down on how much wine you consume. Taurus has a sweet tooth because it is ruled by Venus.
And Venus rules the entire carbohydrate system. Sweets should be kept to a minimum for a Taurus baby and child until age eighteen. They
get obese far sooner than any other sign because of their penchant for sweets, sugar and rich or fa y foods. They also will consume a lot of
“fast food” that has high fat content in it, as well.
