CHE533 – HEAT TRANSFER

Tutorial 1 – Conduction

1) A laboratory furnace wall is constructed of 0.2 m thick fireclay brick having k a = 1.0
W/mK. This is covered on the outer surface with a 0.03 m thick layer of insulating material
having kb = 0.07 W/mK. The furnace inner brick surface is at 1250K and the outer surface of
the insulating material is at 310K. Calculate the steady state heat transfer rate through the
wall in W/m2, and determine the interfacial temperature T 2 between the brick and the
insulation. (Ans: 1495 W/m2, 678 oC)

2) A hollow sphere, r1  r  r2, is kept at a uniform temperature T1 at the inner surface r =

r1 and at temperature T2 at the outer surface r = r2. Show that the heat transfer rate, q, through
the sphere is given by

T1  T2
q W
R
Where the thermal resistance of the sphere is
r2  r1
R Am  (4r12 )(4r22 )  A1 A2
kAm
And k is the thermal conductivity

3) A steam pipe with an outer diameter (D 1) of 8 cm. The pipe is insulated with an
asbestos cement of thickness 1.5 cm and followed by 5 cm-thick layer of glass wool. The
thermal conductivity, k, of the asbestos cement and glass wool is 0.2 and 0.038 W/moC,
respectively. If the temperature of the outer surface of the pipe is 300 oC and that of the outer
surface of the glass wool is 40oC;
i) Draw the thermal resistance network of the system
ii) Determine the heat loss per 1 m length of the pipe. (Ans: 87.80 W/m)
iii) Calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient based on the outer surface of the
insulation.(Ans: Uo = 0.511 W/m2oC)

4) A spherical tank made of 5 m internal diameter and of 1.5 cm-thick stainless steel (k
= 15 W/moC) is used to store iced water at 0oC. The tank is located in a room at a
temperature of 29oC. The walls of the room are also maintained at 29oC. The outer surface
of the tank is black and net transfer between the outer surface of the tank and the
surroundings are by natural convection and radiation. The convection heat transfer
coefficients at the inner and outer surface of the tank are 80 W/m 2oC and 10 W/m2oC,
respectively. Assuming the temperature of the outer surface of the tank is 5 oC, determine:
a. Draw the thermal resistance network.
b. The rate of heat transfer to the iced water in the tank. (Ans: 29,523 W)
c. The amount of ice at 0 oC that melts during the 24 hour period. Given that the
heat of fusion of water at atmospheric pressure is h if = 333.7 kJ/kg. (Ans: 7644 kg)

5) Consider a pipe at a constant temperature whose radius is greater than the critical
radius of insulation. Someone claims that the rate of heat loss from the pipe has increased
when some insulation is added to the pipe. Explain whether the claim is valid?
