CHAPTER 2

Trimble DSMpro - Global Positioning System Receiver

ROVER

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this test protocol is to ensure that equipment(s) stated above is in proper
working condition and able to provide a DGPS position to navigation system

INTRODUCTION

The DSMpro receiver combines high-performance GPS reception with a DGPS-capable

receiver in a lightweight, durable, waterproof housing. The DSMpro receiver also contains
technology which enables Coast Guard Beacon (MSK) real time differential capabilities.
The DSMpro receiver uses DGPS to achieve high accuracy. You can have a DSMpro RS
(this is called the reference or base station) located at a known point. This receiver is used to
determine GPS signal measurement errors. One or more mobile receives (called rovers)
collect data at unknown locations, while remaining within range of the reference station. The
reference station broadcasts correction values, which are applied to the receiver positions. In
this way, errors common to the reference and rover receivers are corrected.

PRE-REQUISITE

Stable regulated DC Power Supply

A ready setup Base Station

FACILITIES

Volt Meter
SPECIAL PRECAUTION

a. Ensure correct polarity +Red –Black

b. Ensure Antenna is connected before power on receiver
c. Do not force the connector when plug in PORTA and PORT B
d. Ensure Clear view of antenna position without any obstruction

CONDUCT

Setting up receiver.

a. Connect red wire to DC positive and Black wire to DC negative

b. Connect power/data I/O cable to PORT A at rear of receiver
c. Connect antenna cable TNC(male) to TNC(female) connector at rear of
receiver.(Refer to Picture1-1 below)
d. Connect GPS Antenna

FIGURE1-1
Procedure

a. Use a Volt meter check that the input voltage is within range 10-32VDC.If complied,
power on receiver.

b. Check the antenna cable connector for no loosen or broken part

c. Check Power/data I/O cable has been fully inserted

d. Perform complete test procedure below

Bite Test

a. Self Test
Upon turn on receiver, ensure receiver is running thru a self test and appeared on
screen the receiver name, part number and version number

b. Keypad Test
Press directly to the front panel button of receiver and ensure that menu changed upon
each press

c. Ensure receiver front panel display is illuminated with backlight

Performance Test

a. Satellite tracking ability test

Upon power on receiver for 10 minutes, check the front panel that numbers of satellites
Should be greater than 4 to give a valid position

b. NMEA sentences output test

To configure the receiver to output NMEA message

c. RTCM Input Test

Connect Data I/O cable to Port B of receiver at rear of receiver
Connect the DB9 female connector to DB9 male connector for Pacific Crest Radio
d. Accuracy Test
Stand alone accuracy: Ensure that when stand alone, accuracy is + 20 meters
Compare position with a known point or with another calibrated
positioning unit
DGPS accuracy : Ensure that when DGPS, accuracy is + 1meter
Compare position with a known point
