What is it like living in a city in a foreign country? Here’s what some of our
readers think.
I’m an Australian living in Moscow. My first impression of the city was that nobody smiled. Russians only smile
when there’s something to be happy about! However, when you know them, they’re friendly and will do
anything to help you. There are a lot of things to do, museums and theaters, etc., and its shopping malls are
fantastic. Moscow has a growing café culture, too. Ten years ago, there weren’t any cafés anywhere, because
people didn’t have the money to go to them. But now it’s a wealthier city, and there are thousands of cafés.

I’m Brazilian and I live in New York, the city that never sleeps! Most of the time, that’s cool. A lot of stores stay
open all night, so I never have to go far to get things. But when I’m trying to sleep, I can hear noisy people
everywhere, even at 2 a.m.! I don’t like the taxis either. When I need one, I can’t find one anywhere! But I
mustn’t complain. Some things are annoying, like the weather and the tourists, but New York is the best city in
the world. With all its amazing buildings and things to do, I don’t want to be anywhere else!

I’m an American living in Shanghai, China. Shanghai is enormous but well-organized, and with the city’s
fantastic transportation system, it’s easy to travel around. The trains get very crowded and you have to push
other people when you need to leave the train, but that’s the only problem! There are amazing buildings
everywhere that show the city’s interesting history. I also love all the different things you can eat. There is
something for everyone, from Russian food to South American! People here speak Mandarin, but most of them
speak a little English. I don’t have to learn Mandarin, but I’m going to classes. I want to be part of this city’s
great community.
